To study the cause of the injury by continuous cropping and the countermeasure for reduction on it's injury in ginseng cultivation by the period passed since post-harvest, and previous soil management far planting, the injury by continuous cropping was investigated from 2004 to 2005 at the continuous cropping field of National Institute of crop Science in Jungpyong county, Korea. There was negative correlation between the ratio of survived root and the Period Passed since post-harvest. The ratio infected by Cylindrocapon destructans and Fusarium spp. in root was about 81${\sim}$95% at continuous cropping field that passed by 3${\sim}$4 years since post-harvest. Though the previous soil management for planting was somewhat effective to increase the ratio of survival root, but which was not effective to protect the infection of Cylindrocapon destructans and Fusarium spp. in root. There was no significant difference in reducing rotted root between management and nonmanagement. When previous soil management for planting was programed, it should be considered that Cylindrocapon destructans was detected at continuous cropping field that passed by above 10 years after harvesting.

BACKGROUND: Soil incorporation of green manure crop(GMC) is one of the methods for reducing continuous cropping injury and increasing yield of carrot. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of green manure crops on growth and yield of carrot for reduction of continuous cropping injury of carrot through crop rotation. METHODS AND RESULTS: To reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of carrot cultivation, GMCs such as crotalaria and sudangrass were applied, which GMC was sowed in latter-June and returned to soil in latter-October. Nutrient contributions of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO in crotalaria were 8.3, 7.5, 4.4, 7.8, and 2.1 kg/10a, respectively. Nutrient contributions of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO in sudangrass were 8.4, 8.6, 26.8, 0.3, and 2.7 kg/10a, respectively. After incorporation of GMCs into soil, bulk density in soil with GMCs was lower than that in soil without GMCs(control). In soil after incorporation of GMCs, pH was not different in all treatment conditions, and ranged from 6.37~6.64. EC in soil after incorporation of GMCs was lower than that in soil without GMCs. The OM, T-N, and avail. $P_2O_5$ contents in soil with GMCs were higher than those in soil without GMCs. The growth and yields were increased as 39.2%(6,226 kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) as compared to continuous cropping system(control and without NPK) of 4,473 kg/10a. Crotalaria cultivation were the most effective crop for reducing the injury of continuous cropping of carrot. CONCLUSION(S): This study suggest that the RCS using GMCs showed lower disease outbreak density in soil for carrot cultivation as compared to CCS without GMCs. Especially, the GMCs good effect for reduction of continuous cropping injury of carrot.
The green manure crops such as rye, hairy vetch and scotch oat were applied to reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) cultivation, which manure crops was sowed in latter-September or mid-October and returned to soil in the next year of May. The growth and yields were increased as 33%(65.0kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) compared to continuous cropping system of 48.9kg/10a. In the CCS of sesame, it was increased as $10{\sim}15%$ in the green manure crop cultivation, and rye cultivation was the most effective crop to reduce the injury of continuous cropping in the green manure crops. The RCS displayed lower disease outbreak and Fussarium oxysporum density in the soil compared with the CCS, and the green manure crop showed good effect in the CCS of sesame. In the RCS, the porosity was most high in the RCS and CCS of rye cultivation, while rye and hairy vetch was effective way to reduce the injury of continuous cropping. The outbreaks of wilt disease and phytophthora blight were increased as the CCS years, however displayed lowest outbreaks of disease and the yields showed highest in the rye cultivation.
To reduce the injury by continuous cropping of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), the farmer's plant and virus-free plant were cultivated with the density of $70{\times}25cm$ (June 10, 2011) in continuous cropping soil (CCS) and subsoiling reversion soil (SRS). Fertilizer was applied at the rates of 55-63-156 $kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O$) and 10 $ton\;ha^{-1}$ of cattle manure in CCS, and it was applied the 50% increased cattle manure compost and nitrogen in DRS. Symptoms of viral infection were revealed in the farmer's plant at 30 days after planting, but there were no symptoms in virus-free plant. The yield of virus-free plant was more increased 15% and 10.5% than that of farmer's plant in DRS and CCS, respectively. The yield of sweetpotato in SRS was more increased 8.8% and 3.2% in farmer's plant and virus-free plant compared to CCS, respectively. In DRS, the rate of marketable tuber of virus-free plant was increased by 80% compared to the farmer's plant (60.1%). The virus-free plant was produced the tuber with more brilliant peel color and well-formed shape compared to the farmer's plant. The increased yield of virus-free plant and in SRS soil condition showed a positive relationship (p=0.05) with the number of leaf per plant at 30 days and the number of branch per plant at 120 days after planting. The results showed that the early growth after planting was very important for the development of storage root. Therefore, the deep-subsoil reversion and cultivation of virus-free plant could be reduced the injury by continuous cropping of sweet potato, and increased farm income.

This study was conducted to obtain the information about injury caused by continuous cropping of peony (Paeonia lactiflora). Soil physico-chemical properties, characteristics of microbial distribution and diversities in the continuous cropped field with peony were analyzed. As the results, pH and organic matter content were higher in the continuous cropping soil than those in the first cropping soil. Bulk density was decreased but porosity was increased in the continuous cropping soil. As the cultivation period was lengthened in years, the populations of bacteria and actinomyces were gradually decreased, whereas fungal population was increased. It was shown that the metabolic diversity patterns of the microbial communities in the continuous cropping soil differed from that of the first cropping soil. These results indicate that deterioration of soil quality such as physico-chemical properties including a soil depth, bulk density, porosity and soil pH is related with a continuous cultivation periods, and also affect a microbial population, especially fungi.

This study suggest that the RCS using GMCs showed lower disease outbreak density in soil for tomato cultivation as compared to RCS without GMCs. Especially, the GMCs was good effect for reduction of continuous cropping injury of tomato.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soil amendment with different characteristics on plant growth, fruit yield and quality of oriental melon for continuous cropping under protected cultivation. Humus layers in arable soil was disturbed because soil amendment from hillside to oriental melon field was continued to resolve problems for continuous cropping. Water potential and hardness of soil was decreased in sandy loam with lower clay contents compared with loam and silty clay. Leaf length and area, fresh and dry weight of plant at earlier growing stage were higher, but chlorophyll contents of leaves were dropped in sandy loam compared with silty clay soil. Fruit size and weight was higher in sandy loam, but soluble solid and color of fruit were increased in silty clay. Marketable and unmarketable yield and quantity of fermented fruit were the highest in sandy loam. Hardness and weight of fruit were decreased by longer storage period and soluble solids of fruit was peaked at 5 day after storage, but decreased by prolonged continued storage. Because of these results, soil characteristics of amendment to oriental melon field should be considered as an important factor for quality and yield of oriental melon.
The present experiment was conducted to investigate causes affecting the reduction of red pepper production in the continuous cultivation upland soil from 1985 to 1986 in Imsil Chonbuk Province. The results obstained are summarized as follows: 1. Area ratio of continuous cultivation 2 years was 12.7%, 3 years 6.8% and over 4 years 48.9%. 2. Soil hardness and volume of solid and liguid of red pepper continuous cultivation soil were higher than those of one year cultivation, while pH and content of organic matter of continuous cultivation soil were low. The exceeding optimum level of phosphorus and potassium appeared factors affecting and reduction of red pepper of continuous cultivation soil. 3. Microflora density in continuous cultivation soil was high but bacteria/fungi (B/F) and actinomycetes/fungi (A/F) ratio were low. 4. The density of soil nematodes in continuous cultivation soil were higher than that in one year cultivation soil, however, the steeper and better drainage soil lowered the density of nematodes. 5. Continuous cultivation over 4 years showed 14.3% of plants diseased by phytophthora while 0.7% in one year cultivation soil.
The present experiment was conducted to investigate effects of soil conditioner applied on continuous cropping fields of red pepper from 1985 to 1986 in Imsil, Chunbuk province. 1. The ratios of bacteria/fungi (B/F) and actinomycetes/fungi (A/F) in the soils of continuous cultivation were increased with application of phytotoxin decomposers such as deep tillage (De), compost (Co), magnesium lime (Mg), gypsum silicate, and De + Co + Mg. 2. Degradation of phytotoxin (p-hydrohylenyons aeid) in the continuous soils was promoted with application of De, Co, Mg, gypsum, silicate and De + Co + Mg resulting in yield increase. 3. The infection rate plant by phytophthora were decreased with deep tillage and application of compost and magnesium lime and caused the increase of yield (22%) due to the increase of fruit per hill.
The effect of flooding and soil salinity on the growth of yam (Dioscorea batatas) were studied on the experimantal site temporally established in the south-eastern part of Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land (near Gwanghwal myun, Gimjae-gun, Jellabukdo, Korea). Yam seedlings planted by using aerial bulblet as alternative of sliced tubers, were grown for 20-days and transplanted in black-vinyl mulched ridges (about 20 cm in height) at 70cm interval by $20{\times}60cm$ spacing in the $4^{th}$ of May, 2010. Soil salinity was maintained at lower than 1.2 ds $m^{-1}$ during the growing period and did not result to salt injury in all plants. However, flooding injury very seriously led to plant death and plant mortality rates at $67{\pm}21$ and $82{\pm}9%$ of yam plants in the compost and no compost treatment, respectively, died by heavy flooding during the rainy summer season. The main reasons of the flooding injury included the decreased rainfall acceptable capacity (RAC) after the rising of water table and a slowdown of water infiltration rate after the formation of an impermeable soil crust in the furrow bottom with continuous and heavy downpour during the rainy summer season. The effect of compost treatment was not statistically observed because of the severe spatial difference caused by wet injury, although yam tuber yield was higher at 30 kg $10^{-1}$ in the compost treatment than in the no-compost treatment at 20 kg $10^{-1}$. However, the size of tuber ranged at 1.23 to 1.60 cm in diameter and 3.7 to 5.0 cm in length in all both treatment, which means they are still reproducible for the next cropping season. Conclusively, proper counter-flooding measure and soil salinity control critically important for successful yam production in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land.
