From its initial colonization to causation of disease, Streptococcus pneumoniae has evolved strategies to cope with a number of stressful in vivo environmental conditions. In order to analyze a global view of this organism's response to heat shock, we established a 2-D electrophoresis proteome map of the S. pneumoniae D39 soluble proteins under in vitro culture conditions and performed the comparative proteome analysis to a 37 to $42^{\circ}C$ temperature up-shift in S. pneumoniae. When the temperature of an exponentially growing S. pneumoniae D39 culture was raised to $42^{\circ}C$, the expression level of 25 proteins showed changes when compared to the control. Among these 25 proteins, 12 were identified by MALDI-TOF and LC-coupled ESI MS/MS. The identified proteins were shown to be involved in the general stress response, energy metabolism, nucleotide biosynthesis pathways, and purine metabolism. These results provide clues for understanding the mechanism of adaptation to heat shock by S. pneumoniae and may facilitate the assessment of a possible role for these proteins in the physiology and pathogenesis of this pathogen.

This research studies the behavior of the FRP-concrete interface subjected to two environmental substances. Frist is to investigate the behavior by the application of different bonding materials at the interface between FRP and concrete, second is to understand a long-term performance at the interface by Freeze-thaw actions. The parameters considered in this research are the maximum bonding strength and the effective bonding length at the FRP-concrete interface. In the first experimental phase, three types of specimens are fabricated and tested considering the number of applied bonding materials and the Freeze-thaw tests are performed to evaluate the behavior of the interface in the cycle range of 0 to 300 cycles. Finally, it is known that there is a 5~7% difference of the effective bonding length between applied bonding materials and the values for the maximum stress and the effective length under Freeze-thaw action are varied randomly as the freeze-thaw cycle is increased even though initial reduction of their capacities are occurred.
In this research, the algorithm for simulating specific grain size distribution(GSD) with large diameter granular material was developed using the distinct element analysis program $PFC^{3D}$(Particle Flow Code). This modeling approach can generate the initial distinct elements without clump logic or cluster logic and prevent distinct element from escaping through the confining walls during the process. Finally the proposed distinct element model is used to simulate large triaxial compression test of the rockfill material and we compared the simulation output with lab test results. Simulation results of Assembly showed very well agreement with the GSD of the test sample and numerical modeling of granular material would be possible for various stress conditions using this application through the calibration.
This paper presents results from a study undertaken to quantitatively evaluate the geotextile pore sizes using optical image analysis. The evaluation was conducted by observing surfaces of coupons cut from resin-impregnated specimens of geotextile-geomembrane layered under various load conditions. Stereological concepts were applied to collect representative specimens from a series of laboratory tests. The sizes of voids enclosed by filaments were expressed in terms of the largest inscribing opening size (LIOS) distribution. The opening diameter corresponding to the 50% cumulative frequency decreased by about 45mm as the load increased from 10 to 300kPa and recovered to about 90% of its initial state on unloading back to 10kPa. The average void size was reduced by 32 and 16.5% as the geotextile was sheared against a textured geomembrane under normal stresses of 100 and 300kPa, respectively. The results showed how the LIOS distribution varied as a function of normal stress and interface shear displacement against a smooth and a textured geomembrane surfaces.

The use of geotextile as reinforcing materials in soil structures has become widespread throughout the world. Geotextile reinforcement has been used in retaining walls, roadbed, embankment stabilization and especially reinforcement of soft foundation, and so on, In the past, however, its design and construction have been performed empirically. In this study, laboratory model tests were carried out in order to investigate the effects of geotextile rein- forcement on vertical and horizontal displacement and other characteristics in soft founda- tions. The experiments were executed in eight treatments ;no geotextile between embank - ment and subsoils, and seven geotextiles with different tensile strength. And such factors as the loading conditions, the tensile strength of geotextiles, the ingredient of geotextiles and the elapsed time were investigate in this study. And the analytical method were executed in order to study the stress and behavior of geotextile - reinforced soil structure by the nonlinear elasto - plastic finite element model. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. 1. Geotextile reinforcement reduced the effects of banking loads on subsoils more effectively with the increase of their tensile strength. 2. As the tensile strength of geotextiles was increase, the rate of the initial vertical disp - lacements of loading plate was reduced inverse proportional to loads, Rowever, the effect of loading was reduced when the loads exceed a certain limits, 3. The effect of reinforcement of nonwoven geotextile was 1.5-4.5 times larger than that of the woven geotextile with equivalent tensile strength. 4. The increased bearing capacity and the reduced settlement are proportioned as the tensile strength of geotextile. 5. The settlement at the long time loading were developed almost all, were completed after 10 days and the additional settlement were not developed since then. 6. The nonlinear elasto - plastic finite element method are accurate to predict the stresses and behayior of geotextile - reinforced soil structures.

Recently, with development of mechanics of materials, as pursuing the high speed of the ships, there has been an increasing demand on the composite construction which satisfies high strength and low weight at the same time. A sandwich element is a type of composite construction, which is composed of thin, strong, stiff and relatively high density faces and a thick, light, and weaker core material. As the second moment is increased by faces separated from the neutral axis farther, a sandwich element is most effective light structural form. In this study, Rayleigh-Ritz Energy Method is adopted, which can analyze sandwich plate relatively simply and exactly. Stresses and buckling loads are analyzed exactly, when uniform lateral pressure load, inplane compression and inplane shear are acting at the sandwich plate. Including a wrinkling stress, this study can be applied to the initial design and minimum weight design of sandwich plates.
An inverter scroll compressor is used for the air conditioning in cars. Scrolls would be changed from the aluminum material to the magnesium material in order to satisfy the light weight trends of cars. The material changing influences on the scroll dimensions particularly the gap between two scrolls. Since the larger gap declines the performance of the compression, the gap between wraps of scrolls or the gap between wraps of scrolls to the plate of the opposite scroll is regarded as an important design variable. This paper is focused on the effects of the thermal stress due to the materials changing. The temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet is about 60 degrees and the highest operating temperature in the compressor is less than 110 degrees. The level of thermal stresses in the magnesium scroll is less than the result from aluminum one. The trend of the deformation is revealed that the normal directional deformation is 2 times lager than the in-plane directional deformation. Therefore the gap between the top of the wrap to the plate of the opposite scroll become more important than the other gaps. The orbiting scroll deforms larger than the fixed scroll by the thermal stresses. The deformation of the magnesium scroll is about 10% lager than that of the aluminum scroll. This value is similar to the ratio of the coefficients of thermal expansion of two materials. At the initial design stage, the results give many useful guides to engineers to propose gaps between parts.
The stretching of synthetic fibers by hot dry process is very difficult, because these fibers have high glass transition temperature at above $150^{\circ}C$. But, we used a swell-wet stretching precess; the fibers are stretched in a swelling agent such as organic solvents at lower temperature. In this study, 100% acryl fibers were uniaxially stretched with free width at $70^{\circ}C$ by swell-wet process in organic solvents. The stretchability was estimated by stretching work. This work is concerned with stretching stress and strain, and initial modulus. We found that it is a good parameter for the estimatation of high strength to the acrylic fiber. The effects of stretching conditions on the molecular orientation for high strength and mechanical properties of PAN fibers were measured.
Two kinds of failure model, that is, the Gurson model and a shear failure model were used for the finite element analyses of simple and notch tensile specimens and axial compression of a fracture tube with initial saw-cuts. The parameter values for the shear failure model were determined by a combined experimental and numerical analysis of the notch tensile specimens. After fitting the numerical parameters such as the yielding stress and the fracture shear strains, the Gurson model and the shear failure model were applied to the analysis of the fracture tube. Although the Gurson model and the shear failure model showed similar fracture behavior for the case of the tensile specimens, the respective results were different in the axial force and the crack growth rate of the fracture tube. That is, the shear failure model required more axial force to make the cracks propagate along the tube than the Gurson model. These are believed to show the lack of damage evolution process of the shear failure model. To decide which model is better in the tube analysis, experimental verification will be necessary.
Effect of joints which pre-exist in the rock mass on the behavior of underground structures is studied. A finite element program is developed using a constitutive mode for rock masses exhibiting nonlinear anisotropic behavior. The initial loading scheme combined with reduced region of analysis is employed to minimize the problem size. A circular tunnel within rock mass is analyzed and the results are compared with those of elasto-plastic analysis to verify that the program is reasonable. The effect of joint direction is also analyzed in regard to stress relaxation, displacement, and deformation shape. It is concluded that the joint direction has significant influence on the nonlinear behavior of rock masses such that the vicinity of tunnel perpendicular to the direction of the joints is stressed to slide. It is also observed that the circular shape deforms to an elliptical shape with a major axis in the joint direction.
