A Case Study on the Implement of Teaching and Learning Models aiming at Training Creative Engineers: focused on the SICAT

  • The purpose of this paper is to apply the newly developed SICAT teaching and learning model to the actual scene of teaching and learning and draw a point of discussion for utilizing teaching and learning model, by uncovering the satisfaction of students and the inhibiting/facilitating elements when using the model. SICAT(Scientific Inquiry and Creative Activity with Technology; from here on SICAT), a teaching and learning model custom-built for engineering education, was developed, as more and more people paid attention to the demand for creative engineers. It was developed from the basis of PBL(Problem Based Learning), includes three sub-types which can be applied to the actual theory, design, and experimentation fields within engineering education. The three sub-types, which are ARDA(Analysis-Reasoning Activity & Discussion-Argumentation Activity), CoCD (Collaboration Activity & Capstone Design Activity), and ReSh(Reflection Activity & Sharing Activity), respectively support deductive and argumentation activities, creative design and collaboration activities, and retrospection and sharing activities. However, no research has been conducted to investigate whether or not there are inhibiting or facilitating elements in the application procedure, or what the rate of satisfaction for students is, when applying the SICAT model, which was newly developed to innovate existing engineering education, to the actual site of teaching and learning. Therefore, this research applied three types of SICAT teaching and learning models to the theory, design, and experimentation classes at the department of materials science and engineering at Hanyang University for eight weeks. After application, the students, teachers and tutors were surveyed and interviewed, and then the results analyzed in order to uncover inhibiting/facilitating elements and the rate of satisfaction. The satisfaction rate of students from the SICAT teaching and learning model was 3.78(in a perfect score of 5: The A type-3.65, The C type-3.80, The R type-3.90), and inhibiting/facilitating elements were drawn from the aspects of learning activities, support system. In conclusion, they can be contributed for implications of SICAT teaching and learning model universal use at engineering education in University.

  • Garlic(Allium sativum Linn) is widely used as a common condiment for a variety of foods and beverages. It has been well known that fresh garlic and garlic supplement of commercial preparations have various therapeutic properties including antimicrobial activity, antiplatelet aggregation, antihypertension, and cholesterol-lowering effects, which contribute to its increasing uses for an alternative medicine. Allicin(diallyl thiosulfinate), the major bioactive components of garlic, is formed by alliinase cleavage of the naturally occurring alliin upon crushing or mincing of garlic, and is the progenitor of a number of other products, such as diallyl disulfide. CYP3A4, heme-containing monooxygenase, is a key enzyme responsible for drug metabolism. Therefor, in the present study, we isolated and examined the compounds with CYP3A4-inhibiting activities from garlic. Among EtOAc extracts of garlic, we found that N-p-coumaroyltyramine and N-feruloyltyramine showed remarkable CYP3A4-inhibiting activities, compared to diallyl disulfide. Structures of the isolated active compounds were established by chemical and spectroscopic means.

무, 양파의 시료제조 방법에 따른 흰쥐의 지방대사와 항산화능에 관한 연구 (Effect of Dry Powders, Ethanol Extracts and Juices of Radish and Onion on Lipid Metabolism and Antioxidative Capacity in Rats)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dry powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion on lipid metabolism, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity in rats. Forty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 157$\pm$6g were blocked into seven groups according to body weight and raised for four weeks with diets containing 5%(w/w) dry powders of two different vegetables consumed frequently by Korean-radish(Raphanus sativus L.) and onion(Allium cepa L.), ethanol extracts and juices from equal amount of each dry powder. All the powders, ethanol extracts and juices of radish and onion decreased total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol concentrations in plasma and liver. Above all, onion ethanol extract decreased them most remarkably. It was thought that organosulfur compounds and flavonoids extracted from onion by ethanol inhibited biosynthesis and absorption of lipid and promoted degradation of lipid. Radish powder also decreased them by increasing fecal excretions of total lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol most effectively. Catalase and glutathine peroxidase(GSH-px) activities in red blood cell(RBC) were most remarkably increased by radish powder and onion powder respectively. Superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and GSH-px activities in liver were most remarkably increased by onion ethanol extract, radish powder and onion ethanol extract respectively. Xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities in liver were most effectively decreased by ethanol extracts of radish and onion. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels in plasma and liver of experimental groups were significantly lower than those of controls. Above all, onion powder decreased them most effectively. It was thought that vitamin E and high flavonoids in onion powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC SOD, catalase and GSH-px activities and inhibiting XOD activities effectively. Flavonoids in onion ethanol extract inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting three antioxident enzyme activities and inhibiting XOD activities most remarkably. Also flavonoids and high vitamin C in radish powder inhibited lipid peroxidation, promoting liver and RBC catalase most remarkably and inhibiting XOD activities. In conclusion, radish and onion were effective in lowering lipid levels and inhibiting of lipid peroxidation in animal tissue. From these data, radish and onion can be recommended in the treatment and prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer and in delaying aging. As ethanol from onion were most effective in lowering lipid level and promoting three antioxident enzymes, and inhibited lipid peroxidation as did we should try to utilize onion skin which is discarded though reported to have abundant flavonoids. In Vitro Growth-inhibiting Effects of Leaf Extracts from Pinus Species on Human Intestinal Bacteria

  • Methanol extracts of leaves from 15 Pinus species belonging to the family Pinaceae were tested for their in vitro growth-inhibiting activities against 10 bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal tracts of human, using impregnated paper disk methods. The inhibitory activities varied with both bacterial strain and Pinus species used. At a concentration of 10 mg/disk, a clear growth inhibition was produced from the extracts of Pinus armandii, P. banksiana, P. bungeana, P. densiflora, P. rigida, and P. thunbergii against Clostridium perfringens, whereas all Pinus samples revealed weak or little growth-inhibiting activity against Escherichia coli, Bacteroides fragilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. At 5 mg/disk, the extracts of P. banksiana and P. thunbergii exhibited potent growth inhibition toward C. perfringens. All the extracts except the one from P. densiflora did not adversely affect growth of Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. longum, B. bifidum, B. breve, B. animalis, and Lactobacillus casei. The growth-inhibiting activity was more pronounced in C. perfringens, as compared to the lactic acid-producing bacteria. These results may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological activities of these Pinus species.

Biological Activities of Essential Oils from Angelica tenuissima Nakai

  • The current study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil fraction from the roots of Angelica tenuissima Nakai and its main components. We extracted the essential oil fraction from the roots of A. tenuissima using steam distillation and isolated its main components. Their antibacterial activities were determined by broth dilution test against food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by DPPH-scavenging assay and reducing-power test. Also tested was their ability to inhibit the growth of two gastrointestinal cancer cell lines, Caco-2 and MKN-45. The A. tenuissima oil fraction and its main components, ligustilide and butylidene phthalide exhibited marked inhibitory effects against most of the tested antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains with minimum inhibiting concentrations (MICs) from $0.21{\pm}0.08$ to $3.60{\pm}0.89mg/ml$. They also showed growth-inhibiting activity against Caco-2 and MKN-45 cells. The oil fraction showed significant antioxidant activities in DPPH radical scavenging assay and reducing-power test. Taken together, A. tenuissima essential oil could be used as a safe additive for preventing food contamination by pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, its antioxidative activity and the ability to inhibit gastrointestinal carcinoma cell lines could increase its value for functional foods and prevention of cancer.

Growth-Inhibiting Effects of Herb Plants on Human Intestinal Bacteria

  • Essential oils of 21 herb plant samples, using spectrophotometric and paper disc agar diffusion methods under anaerobic conditions, were tested in vitro for their growth-inhibiting activities against Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, Lactobacillus casei, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli. The responses varied with bacterial strains and plant oils. At 10 mg/disk, all essential oils did not inhibit beneficial intestinal bacteria, except for the oil of Alpinia officinarum and Melaleuca alternifolia against L. casei. Due to their strong growth-inhibitory activities against C. perfringens, E. coli, and L. casei, the activites of nine oils were evaluated at low concentrations. In test with C. perfringens at 1 mg/disk, the oils of Amyris balsamifera, Curcuma longa, M. alternifolia, and Trachyspermum ammi showed moderate activities. Moderate activities against E. coli were observed with the oils of M. alternifolia and T. ammi. These results may be indications of at least one of the pharmacological actions of the four herb plants.

갯방풍 지상부 정유 및 그 주성분의 항상제 감수성 및 내성 Streptococcus pneumoniae 균주에 대한 억제효과 (In Vitro Inhibitory Activities of Essential Oils from the Aerial Parts of Glehnia littoralis and its Main Components Against Antibiotic-Susceptible and -Resistant Strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae)

  • To develop a new natural antibiotics from Koran plant resources for dealing with the current situation regarding the rapid increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogen, the in vitro inhibitory activities of essential oils from the young leaves of Glehnia littoralis (Umbelliferae) as well as its main constituents were evaluated against susceptible and resistant species of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The essential oil fraction of G. littoralis and its main components, $\alpha-and\;\beta-pinene$, exhibited significant inhibitory activities against the antibiotic-susceptible and resistant strains of S. pneumoniae, with MICs (minimum inhibiting concentrations) ranging from 4.0mg/ml to 16mg/ml. No remarkable differences were shown between the susceptible and resistant strains. Moreover, the disk diffusion test disclosed that these inhibitory activities were dose­dependent. Furthermore, data from the checkerboard titer test with FICIs (fractional inhibiting concentration indices) from 0.15 to 0.28 indicated synergisms between norfloxacin and $\alpha-or\;{\beta}-pinene$ in activity against S. pneumoniae KCCM49629 and S. pneumoniae CCARM4059.

Effect of Schizandra chinensis Extracts on Oxidative Damage

  • In this study, we evaluated the protective effects of supercritical extracts and two step ethanol extracts after supercritical extraction from Schizandra chinensis on antioxidant activities and oxidative DNA and cell damages. Supercritical extracts removed DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryldrazyl) radical by 85.5% at 200 ${\mu}g$/ml, but showed low activities of scavenging and chelating the hydroxyl radical and ferrous iron. However, two step ethanol extracts showed low activities of scavenging the DPPH radical, but removed the hydroxyl radical by 86% at 200 ${\mu}g$/ml. In addition, we tested the activities of extracts for reducing hydroxyl radical-induced DNA and cell damage. Two step ethanol extracts showed protective effect against the oxidative DNA damage by reducing DNA segmentation, inhibiting DNA migration and decreasing the expression of phospho-H2AX. Also, two step ethanol extracts showed protective effect against the oxidative cell damage by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and increasing the expression of p21 protein. Taken together, we suggest that two step ethanol extracts from S. chinensis have a role as useful inhibitors against oxidative damages.

Biological Activities of Phloroglucinol Derivatives from Eucalyptus Spp.

  • Eucalyptus is a rich source of biologically active compounds. Among these, phloroglucinol compounds such as sideroxylonals, macrocarpals, euglobals, and robustadials are unique to Eucalyptus species. Sideroxylonal A is a very potent attachment-inhibitor. Macrocarpals show very strong antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria. Macrocarpals also show HIV-RTase inhibitory activity. Euglobals are potent inhibitors of Epstein-Barr virus activation and are developed as skin and antitumor agents. They also show granulation inhibitory activity. In this review we aim to remove the existing confusion in literature on macrocarpals and discuss the biological activities and structure-activity relationships of phloroglucinol compounds.

  • This study examined the pharmacokinetic disposition of SJ-8029. a novel anticancer agent possessing microtubule and topoisomerase inhibiting activities. in mice. rats. rabbits and dogs after i.v. administration. The serum concentration-time curves of SJ-8029 were best described by tri-exponential equations in all these animal species. The mean CI. $V_{ss}$ and $t_{1/2}$ were 0.3 L/h. 0.1 Land 63.2 min in mice. 1.5 L/h. 1.6 Land 247.7 min in rats. 13.8 L/h. 39.6 Land 245.9 min in rabbits. and 29.2 L/h. 44.6 Land 117.4 min in dogs. respectively.
