Based on the theoretical framework of the Double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation, this study was to analysis the causal relationships of stressors (psychological sexual, and physical wife abuse), personal resources (self-efficacy and self-esteem) and social support(emotional and informational support), appraisal(positive appraisal and downward comparisons) with adaptation (psychological well-being and somatic symptoms). Self-administered questionnaire method was used to collect data from 264 wives residing in Chonbuk-do and Kyonggi-do area. The causal model was tested and modified by the maximum likelihood method using UISREL 7 program. Results showed that wife abuse had effect on adaptation indirectly through the latent variables of personal resource and appraisal, which influenced the adaptation directly. In addition, social support indirectly affect the adaptation through personal resource and appraisal. It was also found that all these variables explained 27.6% of the total variance of wives'adaptation, and that personal resources was the most powerful variable in predicting the adaptation of the wives.
The purpose of this study was to research the actual state of mother's internet use and to explore the possibility of the internet use as a social support. The affect of mother's internet use on maternal efficacy is also examined. The Subjects were 250 mothers, who have their first child under 8 years old, in Seoul and Ilsan. Data were gathered through questionnaires. As predicted, mother's internet use was popular among young mothers. And, the main reason of internet use of mothers was to find some information on parenting and nurturing child. Moreover, mothers believed that they could get some social support from using internet in terms of informational, instrumental, and emotional service. However, it should be noted that mother's perceived level of support was significantly different, depending on mother's age, level of mother's education, household income, and the age of the first child. It was also found that mothers who received social support from internet showed higher material efficacy. Thus, we believe that internet use could be a new source of social support for the mothers of young children.
Social support may play an important role in relieving the feelings of guilt and shame of unwed mothers due to social insults and ignorance and in helping them from physical and psychological harm caused by them. To determine if a relationship between perceived social support and hope exists in unwed mothers a descriptive study was conducted in the facilities providing basic data for promoting the health of unwed mothers. A demographic data sheet and two instruments were used : Indirectly Perceived Social Support Scale(IPSSS) developed by Park Jee Won (revised by Jo Moo Yong), Miller Hope Scale(adapted and revised by Lee Mi Ja), 95 unmarried mothers participated. The mean score of perceived social support was 3.17. Family support was the highest(3.47) and unwed father support was the lowest(2.53) in sub-scales. Material support(3.53) was the highest in family support. Emotional support(3.58) was the highest in friends support. Informational support(3.39) was the highest in facilities-concerned personal support. The mean score of hope was 3.41 : the satisfaction with self, others and life was the highest(3.82) and anticipation of future was the lowest(3.27) in sub-scale. There was not a statistically significant relationship between social support and hope. A statistically significant relationship was found between facilities-concerned personal support and hope. In conclusion, facilities-concerned positive encouragement for unwed mothers and a program promoting support and hope from families, friends and unwed father are necessary to promote hope and health in unwed mothers.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to adolescents'welfare by investigating an actual condition of harmful environment and finding helpful ones. A total of 1125 questionnaires were used for the final data analysis. The study revealed the following results. 1. When it comes to spatial environment, adolescents go to PC rooms most frequently among facilities. They showed that the degree of use of harmful facilities is extremely low. The study revealed that frequency of exposure to harmful environment can be reduced more efficiently if adolescents are made to realize the harmfulness than when they are simply made to follow strict regulations. Significant differences were found in spatial environment according to gender and residence. 2. When it comes to informational environment, TV had an enormous influence on adolescent and they were exposed to computer at an early stage than expected. The frequency to see pornography was on the higher increase than ever, which showed outstanding difference according to gender. Also, pornography was mainly spread through friends.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop and to evaluate a internet-based social support program for the mothers of congenitally abnormal children. The theoretical basis of the study is the moderating effect model of social support theory (Cobb, 1976). Methods: In first phase, an internet support program was developed according to the practical web development stages proposed by Boling and Frick (2002). In the second phase, the internet support program was provided and evaluated to 18 mothers who reared congenitally abnormal children from March to May 2008. Results: In the first stage, demands of the program were collected from interviews of eighteen mothers of congenitally abnormal children of ages one to three. At the same time, literature review and validity of the contents were also examined. In the second stage, the correspondence of the program contents to the social support needed was also examined. In the third and fourth stages, prototype of the social program was prepared in documents and that of computer program was prepared. In the final stage, an internet-based web site was constructed. The social support provided by the web site were composed of informational support, emotional support and appraisal support including bulletin board system and chatting service. After program development, pre-tests and post-test were performed to investigate the effect of the program on maternal confidence and mood. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The analysis showed that maternal confidence of post-test was improved than that of pre-test with statistically meaningful figure (Z=-2.54, p<.05). The positive mood of post-test was also improved than that of pre-test and the result was statistically supported (Z=-2.20, p<.05). Conclusion: It is suggestive that the internet based social support programs is accessible and appropriate service to congenitally abnormal children's mother. It is necessary to develop and use the internet based social support programs in public health system.
