  • Recently, the necessity of systems which effectively store and retrieve video data has increased. Conventional video retrieval systems retrieve data using menus or text based keywords. Due to the lack of information, many video clips are simultaneously searched, and the user must have a certain level of knowledge to utilize the system. In this paper, we suggest a natural language based conversational video retrieval system that reflects users' intentions and includes more information than keyword based queries. This system can also retrieve from events or people to their movements. First, an event database is constructed based on meta-data which are generated by domain analysis for collected video in an office environment. Then, a script database is also constructed based on the query pre-processing and analysis. From that, a method to retrieve a video through a matching technique between natural language queries and answers is suggested and validated through performance and process evaluation for 10 users The natural language based retrieval system has shown its better efficiency in performance and user satisfaction than the menu based retrieval system.

  • In this paper, we propose a new composite feature consists of both color and shape information that are suitable for the task of character image retrieval. This approach extracts shape-based information using Zernike moments from Y image in YCbCr color space. Zernike moments can extract shape-based features that are invariant to rotation, translation, and scaling. We also extract color-based information from the DCT coefficients of Cr and Cb image. This approach is good method reflecting human visual property and is suitable for web application such as large image database system and animation because higher retrieval rate has been achieved using only 36 features. In experiment, this method is applied to 3,834 character images. We confirmed that this approach brought about excellent effect by ANMRR(Average of Normalized, Modified Retrieval Rank), which is used in the evaluation measure of MPEG-7 color descriptor and BEP(Bull's Eye Performance), which is used in evaluation measure of shape descriptor in character image retrieval.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate what level of difference in precision would be significantly perceived by a human user of an information retrieval system. Not many researches have been conducted with regards to this issue in information retrieval field. Despite the non-significant results, there were several interesting findings in recognizing different levels of precision rates. The correctness of relevance task had little to do with the taken time for the task. In addition, the strong relationship between the subjects' topic familiarity and rate of correct judgments is one of the most interesting results in this study. It turned out that the subjects have more difficulty in a situation they have to judge between the two lists having more non-relevant documents than in a situation they do between the lists haying more relevant documents. Finally, the serious influence from the first top N documents in a list for relevance judgment task has been confirmed.

  • This paper proposes an automated coding system of Korean standard industry/occupation for census which reduces a lot of cost and labor for manual coding. The proposed system converts natural language responses on survey questionnaires into corresponding numeric codes using information retrieval techniques and document classification algorithm. The system was experimented with 46,762 industry records and occupation 36,286 records using 10-fold cross -validation evaluation method. As experimental results, the system show 87.08% and 66.08% production rates when classifying industry records into level 2 and level 5 codes respectively. The system shows slightly lower performances on occupation code classification. We expect that the system is enough to be used as a semi-automate coding system which can minimize manual coding task or as a verification tool for manual coding results though it has much room to be improved as an automated coding system.

  • In order to process video data effectively, we need to save its content on database and a content-based retrieval method which processes various queries of all users is required. In this paper, we present VRS(Video Retrieval System) which provides similarity query, SQBE(Scene Query By Example) query, and content-based retrieval by combining the feature-based retrieval and the annotation-based retrieval. The SQBE query makes it possible for a user to retrieve scones more exactly by inserting and deleting objects based on a retrieved scene. We proposed query language and query processing algorithm for SQBE query, and carried out performance evaluation on similarity retrieval. The proposed system is implemented with Visual C++ and Oracle.

  • This study has extracted the basic component of the Library Course Pages through case studies of the Library Course Pages Service, and examined the staus quo of the Open Course Ware(OCW) for the sharing of the course materials. The study has also designed and established a ontology-based retrieval system model that is capable of semantic-based retrieval of the course materials in colleges. A comparison between and analysis of the past keyword search results was conducted to evaluate the model. Through evaluation, the study concluded that the ontology-based system was more effective than the keyword search method in both retrieval result and material sharing between the institutions.

  • Telecommunications standards have two different types of regulations: one is a law. enacted by government which all telecommunications related industries must observe. The other is a recommendatory standards. formulated by either government agency or some standardization organizations. Observation of these standards is not obligatory. However, technical standards are strict laws and ordinances based on common judgement and various conditions for evaluation of levels and limits. This paper deals with enhancing productivity of enactment and revision of technical standards. Through database of above related information we secure information continuity and public property of cyber space for the public. In this paper. we also classify recent data within the website in and out of the country offering four different methods of information retrieval and management system. The four retrieval methods suggested in this paper are itemized keyword retrieval. hierarchical retrieval, regulatory keyword retrieval and chronological keyword retrieval. These various retrieval methods provide the public with information of enactment and amendment of laws and regulations in the cyber space. thereby guarantees the sharing of information. Finally the important feature of the information retrieval system implemented in this paper is the online updating capability of law and regulations through the internet.

  • This paper describes a music information retrieval system which uses humming as the key for retrieval Humming is an easy way for the user to input a melody. However, there are several problems with humming that degrade the retrieval of information. One problem is a human factor. Sometimes people do not sing accurately, especially if they are inexperienced or unaccompanied. Another problem arises from signal processing. Therefore, a music information retrieval method should be sufficiently robust to surmount various humming errors and signal processing problems. A retrieval system has to extract pitch from the user's humming. However pitch extraction is not perfect. It often captures half or double pitches. even if the extraction algorithms take the continuity of the pitch into account. Considering these problems. we propose a system that takes multiple pitch candidates into account. In addition to the frequencies of the pitch candidates. the confidence measures obtained from their powers are taken into consideration as well. We also propose the use of an algorithm with three dimensions that is an extension of the conventional DP algorithm, so that multiple pitch candidates can be treated. Moreover in the proposed algorithm. DP paths are changed dynamically to take deltaPitches and IOIratios of input and reference notes into account in order to treat notes being split or unified. We carried out an evaluation experiment to compare the proposed system with a conventional system. From the experiment. the proposed method gave better retrieval performance than the conventional system.

  • For musical genre classification, various types of feature vectors are utilized. Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC), decorrelated filter bank (DFB), and octave-based spectral contrast (OSC) are widely used as short-term features, and their long-term variations are also utilized. In this paper, OSC features are extracted not only in the single-octave band domain, but also in the multiple-octave band one to capture the correlation between octave bands. As a baseline system, we select the genre classification system that won the fourth place in the 2012 music information retrieval evaluation exchange (MIREX) contest. By applying the OSC features based on multiple-octave bands, we obtain the better classification accuracy by 0.40% and 3.15% for the GTZAN and Ballroom databases, respectively.

  • The Web is rich with various sources of information that go beyond the contents of documents, such as hyperlinks and manually classified directories of Web documents such as Yahoo. This research extends past fusion IR studies, which have repeatedly shown that combining multiple sources of evidence (i.e. fusion) can improve retrieval performance, by investigating the effects of combining three distinct retrieval approaches for Web IR: the text-based approach that leverages document texts, the link-based approach that leverages hyperlinks, and the classification-based approach that leverages Yahoo categories. Retrieval results of text-, link-, and classification-based methods were combined using variations of the linear combination formula to produce fusion results, which were compared to individual retrieval results using traditional retrieval evaluation metrics. Fusion results were also examined to ascertain the significance of overlap (i.e. the number of systems that retrieve a document) in fusion. The analysis of results suggests that the solution spaces of text-, link-, and classification-based retrieval methods are diverse enough for fusion to be beneficial while revealing important characteristics of the fusion environment, such as effects of system parameters and relationship between overlap, document ranking and relevance.
