Titanium and its alloys offer attractive properties in a variety of applications. These are widely used for the field of biomedical implants because of its good biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance. Titanium anodizing is often used in the metal finishing of products, especially those can be used in the medical devices with dense oxide surface. Based on SAE/AMS (Society of Automotive Engineers/Aerospace Material Specification) 2488D, it has the specification for industrial titanium anodizing that have three different types of titanium anodization as following: Type I is used as a coating for elevated temperature forming; Type II is used as an anti-galling coating without additional lubrication or as a pre-treatment for improving adherence of film lubricants; Type III is used as a treatment to produce a spectrum of surface colours on titanium. In this study, we have focused on Type II anodization for the medical (dental and orthopedic) application, the anodized surface was modified with gray color under alkaline electrolyte. The surface characteristics were analyzed with Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface roughness, Vickers hardness, three point bending test, biocompatibility, and corrosion (potentiodynamic) test. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy was used for specimen, the anodizing procedure was conducted in alkaline solution (NaOH based, pH>13). Applied voltage was range between 20 V to 40 V until the ampere to be zero. As results, the surface characteristics of anodic oxide layer were analyzed with SEM, the dissecting layer was fabricated with FIB method prior to analyze surface. The surface roughness was measured by arithmetic mean deviation of the roughness profile (Ra). The Vickers hardness was obtained with Vickers hardness tester, indentation was repeated for 5 times on each sample, and the three point bending property was verified by yield load values. In order to determine the corrosion resistance for the corrosion rate, the potentiodynamic test was performed for each specimen. The biological safety assessment was analyzed by cytotoxic and pyrogen test. Through FIB feature of anodic surfaces, the thickness of oxide layer was 1.1 um. The surface roughness, Vickers hardness, bending yield, and corrosion resistance of the anodized specimen were shown higher value than those of non-treated specimen. Also we could verify that there was no significant issues from cytotoxicity and pyrogen test.
In general, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is usually used in the investigation of polymer microstructure. Microtoming, solution casting, staining and carbon replica method are frequently introduced to the study of the polymer morphology with TEM, however the sample preparation procedure of those techniques is very difficult, and it takes a long time. The purpose of this study is to develop a new sample preparation technique which is suitable for the investigation of the various shapes and species of polyolefin microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By modifying the conventional chemical etching method, we developed a new chemical etching technique and sample preparation procedure that are suitable for SEM study of polymer microstructure. In this study the permanganate etching method is introduced and the optimum etching condition are determined by simply adjusting the etchant formulation, concentration and etching time. This technique has shown good reproducibility and it's morphological results agree well with other works on various types of microstructures such as spherulite characterization of isotatic polypropylene $(\alpha/\beta)$, polyethylene and poly-propylene copolymer characterization, and the study of lamellar growth pattern of unsheared or oriented materials. This technique has also been applied to the industrial fields for characterization of the polyolefin film, automobile products and the others.

The production of functional foods providing health benefit is one of the fast growing fields in the food industry. Mannitol as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) is a functional food. Mannitol is about $70\%$ as sweet as sucrose and slowly and incompletely absorbed from the intestine, suppling only about one-half energy value of glucose. Commercially, the mannitol is synthesized by catalytic or electrochemical reduction of glucose. However, as strong demand for natural products increased, biological techniques have been developed for mannitol production. The object of this study was to determine the optimum conditions of mannitol fermentation by Leuconostoc mesenteroides sp. strain JFY isolated from fermented vegetables. The processes parameters such as pH, temperature, yeast extract concentration, and fructose concentration were optimized. The chosen ranges were 4.5 to 7.5 for pH, 22 to $34^{\circ}C$ for temperature, 0.05 to $2.0\%$ for yeast extract. and 5 to 350 g/L for fructose. The mineral medium used consisted of 3.0g $KH_2PO_4,\;0.01g\;FeSO_4{\cdot}H_2O,\;0.01g\;MnSO_4{\cdot}4H_2O,\;0.2g\; MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O,\;0.01g\;NaCl,\;and\;0.05g\;CaCl_2$ per 1 liter of deionized water. The optimum values of pH, temperature, yeast extract, and fructose concentration were obtained at about pH 6.5, temperature $28^{\circ}C$, yeast extract $0.5\%$ and fructose 30g/L. At optimum condition, the production of mannitol amounted to 31.6g/l. We hope that these findings are of particular importance for industrial application of mannitol production.

Characteristics of heating and drying of Canadian-imported Douglas-fir timber using microwave in order to secure convenience and quality of drying timber and to get basic data for secondary conservation treatment are as follows: As the results of analysis of change curves of internal temperature of the timber after irradiating it, round timber and board timber showed stable heat distribution, heat consumption and surface water-content in heating with 30kW for 30 minutes and 120 minutes and with 40kW for 3 minutes and 9 minutes, respectively. Especially, surface water-content distribution according to heating by microwave showed very even leveling and water-content decrease rate was also more 30% compared to its weight showing excellent dry efficiency. And in case of soaking timbers into liquid chemicals for secondary conservation according to the analysis results of heat consumption, it is expected that large amount of preservative will be permeated. Therefore, timber heated by microwave is remarkably available for using industrial materials and developing secondary utilized products with its fast water-content decrease and dryness and higher heat consumption.
Background: To elucidate the relationship between seven occupational dermatoses (ODs) and 20 types of work in Greece. Methods: This was a prevalence epidemiologic study of certain ODs among 4,000 workers employed in 20 types of enterprise, in 104 companies, in 2006-2012, using data from company medical records, questionnaires, occupational medical, and special examinations. The ${\chi}^2$ test was applied to reveal statistically significant relationships between types of enterprises and occurrence of ODs. Results: A high percentage (39.9%) of employees included in the study population suffered from ODs. The highest prevalence rates were noted among hairdressers (of contact dermatitis: 30%), cooks (of contact dermatitis: 29.5%), bitumen workers (of acne: 23.5%), car industry workers (of mechanical injury: 15%), construction workers (of contact urticaria: 29.5%), industrial cleaning workers (of chemical burns: 13%), and farmers (of malignant tumors: 5.5%).We observed several statistical significant correlations between ODs (acute and chronic contact dermatitis, urticaria, mechanical injury, acne, burns, skin cancer) and certain types of enterprises. There was no statistically significant correlation between gender and prevalence of ODs, except for dermatoses caused by mechanical injuries afflicting mainly men [${\chi}^2(1)=13.40$, p < 0.001] and for chronic contact dermatitis [${\chi}^2(1)=5.53$, p=0.019] afflicting mainly women. Conclusion: Prevalence of ODs is high in Greece, contrary to all official reports by the Greek National Institute of Health. There is a need to introduce a nationwide voluntary surveillance system for reporting ODs and to enhance skin protection measures at work.
Aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenol, have been detected frequently in wastewater, soil, and groundwater because of the extensive use of oil products. Bacterial strains (56 isolates) that degraded phenol were isolated from soil and industrial wastewater contaminated with hydrocarbons. GN13, which showed the best cell growth and phenol degradation, was selected for further analysis. The GN13 isolate was identified as Neisseria sp. based on the results of morphological, physiological, and biochemical taxonomic analyses and designated as Neisseria sp. GN13. The optimum temperature and pH for phenol removal of Neisseria sp. GN13 was $32^{\circ}C$ and 7.0, respectively. The highest cell growth occurred after cultivation for 30 hours in a jar fermentor using optimized medium containing 1,000 mg/l of phenol as the sole carbon source. Phenol was not detected after 27 hours of cultivation. Based on the analysis of catechol dioxygenase, it seemed that catechol was degraded through the meta- and ortho-cleavage pathway. Analysis of the biodegradation of phenol by Neisseria sp. GN13 in artificial wastewater containing phenol showed that the removal rate of phenol was 97% during incubation of 30 hours. The removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) by Neisseria sp. GN13 and activated sludge was 83% and 78%, respectively. The COD removal rate by Neisseria sp. GN13 from petrochemical wastewater was about 1.3 times higher than that of a control containing only activated sludge.
High levels of extracellular xylanase activity (211.79 IU/mg) produced by Paenibacillus sp. NF1 were detected when it was submerged-cultured. After three consecutive purification steps using Octyl-Sepharose, Sephadex G75, and Q-Sepharose columns, a thermostable xylanase (XynNF) was purified to homogeneity and showed a molecular mass of 37 kDa according to SDS-PAGE. The specific activity of the purified XynNF was up to 3,081.05 IU/mg with a 14.55-fold purification. The activity of XynNF was stimulated by $Ca^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, DTT, and ${\beta}$-mercaptoethanol, but was inhibited by $Fe^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, SDS, and EDTA. The purified XynNF displayed a greater affinity for oat spelt xylan with the maximal enzymatic activity at $60^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0. XynNF, which was shown to be cellulose-free, with high stability at high temperature ($70^{\circ}C-80^{\circ}C$) and low pH range (pH 4.0-7.0), is potentially valuable for various industrial applications. The enzyme hydrolyzed oat spelt xylan to yield mainly xylooligosaccharides (95.8%) of 2-4 degree of polymerization (DP2-4). Moreover, the majority of the xylooligosacharides (DP2-4) products was xylobiose (61.5%). The thermostable xylanase (XynNF) thus seems potentially usefull in the production of xylooligosaccharides.

In this study, we tried to verify the correlation of the amount of combustible industrial by-products, household waste used as fuels on cement sintering process and the amount of NOx, and CO, harmful components in the exhaust gas. The analysis uses coal as natural fuel, soft plastics (plastics with properties that tend to be scattered by wind, such as vinyls), hard plastics (plastics with properties that are not scattered by wind, such as PETs, wate rubbers), and reclaimed oils as alternative fuels. Utilizing the response surface analysis (RSM) technique using the process data of 2019, such as the fuel input and combustion temperature of a domestic A cement manufacturer's sintering facilities as independent variables, and the NOx, and CO emissions to the stack as dependent variables. Correlation was analyzed. As a result, it was confirmed that the impact on the emission material differs for each waste. In particular, it was analyzed that the hard plastics increase the CO emission but have an excellent effect of reducing NOx.
Ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA) is used as an instant adhesive, and it can be readily polymerized by moisture in air without any initiator and applied for industrial products and ohome use. However, pure ECA monomer is low-viscosity liquid at room temperature that flows into substrate surface. To thicken the instant adhesive, poly(methyl methacylate)(PMMA) is often added in it commercially. Another disadvantage of instant adhesive polymer is its brittleness In this study, functional polymers including PMMA for an additive of ECA were prepared to increase viscosity of the monomer and flexibility of the adhesive atthe same time The additives, P(MMA-VAc-EVE), were synthesized by radical copolymerization of MMA with VAc and EVE having low glass transition temperature (Tg). The additives were added to ECA to get functional instant adhesives. The chemical structures of the additives and ECA polymers were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR and FTIR, and their physical and mechanical properites were also evaluated. The Tg of the obtained additives decreased with increasing the content of VAc or VAc-EVE, indicating more improved flexibility. In addition, functional instant adhesive containing the additives showed higher bonding strength than that of the existing one.

This paper aims to survey the supply status and demand of the scientific & technological information among the 1,059 small enterprises demanding the support in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do which have been supported by the Branch of KISTI and to propose the approaches to improve the scientific & technological information system. As the results of this research, Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do have very poor business and R&D environment to the extent that 96.3% of businesses was small business (medium business only for 3.7%) and 31% of total small & medium-cized businesses has less than 10 R&D workers. Small & medium-sized businesses which have demanded the information to KISTI account for only 0.2% in average for 3 years. The information demand types are market trend (26.8%), industrial property right (22.1%), business proposal (19.9%), item exploration (16.8%) and quality certification (8.4%). The supplied informations include scientific and technological data survey, market survey, translation and information application seminar. The business achievements from the information supply include 379 cases in technological development improvement and launch of products, 88 cases in technology certifications and 414 cases in patents and utility design application and registration. By the analysis results, the small and medium-sized businesses have difficulties in using R&D information by themselves. Thus, it's proposed to establish the science and technology information center in southeastern region and develop the information advisors specialized in local specialty industry categories. It's also proposed to expand the manpower and budget of KISTI concerning the information support for small & medium-sized businesses.
