Among 24 isolates of fluorescent Pseudomonads, 5 isolates named as LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4 and LPT5 were screened in vitro for their nematicidal activity against cyst forming nematode, Heterodera cajani causing patchiness, poor and stunting growth besides discoloration in Sesamum indicum. Second stage juveniles of H. cajani hatched from egg masses were collected from roots of host plant and subjected to fresh and heat-treated culture filtrate of isolates for 24 h. Mortality of H. cajani was recorded on the basis of parameters used for test organism bioassay. Among these isolates, Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPT5 caused maximum mortality towards second stage juvenile of H. cajani in vitro. Five isolates were used as seed coating for the management of cyst forming nematode H. cajani on sesame in green house condition. The strains LPT5 was better than the other strains in reducing the population of H. cajani both in vitro and in vivo. The reduction in cyst and juveniles population was found to be 49 and 60%, respectively when seeds were coated with strain LPT5. Among other strains, LPT4 was also found to inhibit the cyst and juveniles population 12 and 36% respectively. Increases in early vegetative plant growth parameters recorded in both in vitro and in vivo further revealed the significance of indigenous bacteria in comparison to introduced strain.
A psychrotolerant cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena KNUA005, was isolated from a cyanobacterial bloom sample collected near Dasan Station in Ny-${\AA}lesund$, Svalbard Islands during the Arctic summer season. To generate an axenic culture, the isolate was subjected to three purification steps: centrifugation, antibiotic treatment and streaking. The broad antibacterial spectrum of imipenem killed a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria, while the cyanobacterium was capable of enduring both antibiotics, the remaining contaminants that survived after treatment with imipenem were eliminated by the application of an aminoglycoside antibiotic, kanamycin. Physical separation by centrifugation and streaking techniques also aided axenic culture production. According to the cold-tolerance test, this mat-forming cyanobacterium was able to proliferate at low temperatures ranging between 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ which indicates the presence of cold-tolerance related genes in N. spumigena KNUA005. This suggests the possibility of incorporating cold-resistance genes into indigenous cyanobacterial strains for the consistent production of algae-based biofuel during the low-temperature seasons. Therefore, it is needed to determine the cold-tolerance mechanisms in the Arctic cyanobacterium in the next research stage.
This paper provides an overview of the role of membranes in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). Bioelectrochemical systems harvest clean energy from waste organic sources by employing indigenous exoelectrogenic bacteria. This energy is extracted in the form of bioelectricity or valuable biofuels such as ethanol, methane, hydrogen, and hydrogen peroxide. Various types of membranes were applied in these systems, the most common membrane being the cation exchange membrane. In this paper, we discuss three major bioelectrochemical technology research areas namely microbial fuel cells (MFCs), microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) and microbial desalination cells (MDCs). The operation principles of these BESs, role of membranes in these systems and various factors that affect their performance and economics are discussed in detail. Among the three technologies, the MFCs may be functional with or without membranes as separators while the MECs and MDCs require membrane separators. The preliminary economic analysis shows that the capital and operational costs for BESs will significantly decrease in the future due mainly to differences in membrane costs. Currently, MECs appear to be cost-competitive and energy-yielding technology followed by MFCs. Future research endeavors should focus on maximizing the process benefits while simultaneously minimizing the membrane costs related to fouling, maintenance and replacement.
In 2018, as a subset study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 18 unreported bacterial strains were discovered. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.8%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade, it was determined that each strain belonged an independent and predefined bacterial species. There were no official report that these 18 species were previously described in Korea; therefore, one strain of Williamsia, one strain of Rhodococcus, three strains of Microbacterium, three strains of Agromyces, one strain of Arthrobacter, one strain of Paeniglutamicibacter, one strain of Pseudarthrobacter, one strain of Nocardioides, one strain of Fibrella, one strain of Hymenobacter, one strain of Deinococcus, two strains of Fictibacillus, and one strain of Paenibacillus are described as unreported bacterial species in Korea. Gram reaction, basic biochemical characteristics, and colony and cell morphologies are described in the species description section.
During an investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in the Republic of Korea, a total of 38 bacterial strains belonging to the class Gammaproteobacteria were isolated from diverse environments. Samples were collected from soil, seawater, sand, sedimentary soil, rabbit feces, rat intestines, marine wetland, and tidal flats. The strains were identified to the species level using the high 16S rRNA gene sequences and showed high similarity (>98.7%) with the closest bacterial species and formed a robust clade in the neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree; it was determined that each strain belonged to independent, predefined bacteria species within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The 38 strains of Gammaproteobacteria analyzed in this study have not been reported in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, this study describes 20 genera of 13 families in 8 orders: Aeromonadales, Alteromonadales, Cellvibrionales, Enterobacterales, Lysobacterales, Oceanospirillales, Pseudomonadales, and Vibrionales. For each species, we describe Gram reaction, strain ID, isolation source, colony and cell morphology, cultural, physiological, and basic biochemical characteristics.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of yeast cultures (Candida zeylanoides and Debaryomyces hansenii) isolated from traditionally dry fermented Turkish sucuks, on some physicochemical and microbiological properties of the product. Eight different batches of the sucuks were produced by the inoculation of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cultures (Lactobacillus curvatus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus sakei) in different combinations. The sucuks were ripened for 12 days and analyzed at 1st, 6th, and 12th days of ripening. Percent moisture content, pH, water activity (aw) and residual nitrite values of the sucuk inoculated with the yeast cultures were higher at the end of the ripening. The use of yeast cultures decreased hardness, gumminess, and chewiness values of the sucuk while increased adhesiveness values. Major volatile groups were aldehydes, terpenes, and sulphur compounds in the sucuk samples. The most noticeable results were for sensory properties of the sucuk that were positively improved by the yeast cultures.

Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum Rottler) has potential risks associated with pathogenic bacterial contamination as it is usually consumed raw. In this study, we investigated the microbiota of Chinese chives purchased from traditional markets and grocery stores in March (Spring) and June (Summer) 2017. Differences in bacterial diversity were observed, and the microbial composition varied across sampling times and sites. In June, potential pathogenic genera, such as Escherichia, Enterobacter, and Pantoea, accounted for a high proportion of the microbiota in samples purchased from the traditional market. A large number of pathogenic bacteria (Acinetobacter lwoffii, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Serratia marcescens) were detected in the June samples at a relatively high rate. In addition, the influence of the washing treatment on Chinese chive microbiota was analyzed. After storage at 26℃, the washing treatment accelerated the growth of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) because it caused dynamic shifts in Chinese chive indigenous microbiota. These results expand our knowledge of the microbiota in Chinese chives and provide data for the prediction and prevention of food-borne illnesses.

The phylum Actinobacteria includes many groups of aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, rod, or filamentous shaped bacteria. Actinobacteria are known for multicellular differentiation in some groups, and also for production of various secondary metabolites such as antibiotics. During a series of extensive surveys of indigenous prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, bacterial strains belonging to Actinobacteria were isolated from various sources of terrestrial environments. A total of 21 bacterial strains, belonging to 10 genera in 8 families, were isolated as unrecorded species in Korea. Among them, 11 were assigned to the family Streptomycetaceae, two species assigned to each of the families Microbacteriaceae, Mycobacteriaceae and Nocardioidaceae, and one species assigned to each of the families Euzebyaceae, Corynebacteriaceae, Micrococcaceae and Intrasporangiaceae. At the genus level, Streptomyces (10 species) was the most abundant, followed by Microbacterium and Mycolicibacterium(2 species each), and one species in each of the genera Corynebacterium, Euzebya, Arthrobacter, Terracoccus, Kribbella, Nocardioides and Yinghuangia. The detailed descriptions of each unrecorded species are provided.

We measured the influence of antifungal antagonists Bacillus subtilis AH18 and Bacillus licheniformis K11 on soil microbial community in microcosms. Both antifungal antagonists were confirmed to suppress hot pepper phytophthora blight. Phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) were analyzed to investigate the soil microbial community. B. subtilis AH18 changed the total PLFA composition and bio-indicators of PLFA, compared with other treatments. B. subtilis AH18 decreased the proportion of bacteria and gram negative/gram positive bacteria, and increased the fungi/bacteria and anaerobic/aerobic microorganisms. In addition cy19:0/18:$1{\omega}7c$, which means adaptation to unfavorable environmental conditions, was increased by the application of B. subtilis AH18. On the other hand the inoculation of B. licheniformis K11 or combined inoculation of both antifungal strains did not affect soil microbial community. The suppression of phytophthora blight and preservation of indigenous soil microbial community may be achieved by the combined application of B. subtilis AH18 and B. licheniformis K11.
