  • In this paper we propose a content-based image retrieval method that can search large image databases efficiently by color, texture, and shape content. Quantized RGB histograms and the dominant triple (hue, saturation, and value), which are extracted from quantized HSV joint histogram in the local image region, are used for representing global/local color information in the image. Entropy and maximum entry from co-occurrence matrices are used for texture information and edge angle histogram is used for representing shape information. Relevance feedback approach, which has coupled proposed features, is used for obtaining better retrieval accuracy. Simulation results illustrate the above method provides 77.5 percent precision rate without relevance feedback and increased precision rate using relevance feedback for overall queries. We also present a new indexing method that supports fast retrieval in large image databases. Tree structures constructed by k-means algorithm, along with the idea of triangle inequality, eliminate candidate images for similarity calculation between query image and each database image. We find that the proposed method reduces calculation up to average 92.9 percent of the images from direct comparison.

  • With the recent development of wireless network technologies, there have been increasing usage of variouse position base servies. Position based services basically collect position information of moving object for the utilization of them in real life. Accordingly, new index structures are required to efficiently retrieve the consecutive positions of moving objects. In the paper, we consider volume of Extended Minimum Bounding Rectangles(EMBR) to be determined by average size of range queries. We proposed the methode that split efficiently moving object with long distance between location, and split moving object for decrease searching space an Estimated-Split algorithm that minimizes the volume of MBRs is designed and simulated. Our experimental evaluation confirms the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed splitting policy.

  • Some of the current main research areas involving techniques related to XML consist of storing XML documents, optimizing the query, and indexing. As such we may focus on the set of documents that are composed of various structures, but that are not shared with common structure such as the same DTD or XML Schema. In the case, it is essential to analyze structural similarities and differences among many documents. For example, when the documents from the Web or EDMS (Electronic Document Management System) are required to be merged or classified, it is very important to find the common structure for the process of handling documents. In this paper, we transformed sequential pattern mining algorithms(1) to extract maximal similar paths between two XML documents. Experiments with XML documents show that our transformed sequential pattern mining algorithms can exactly find common structures and maximal similar paths between them. For analyzing experimental results, similarity metrics based on maximal similar paths can exactly classify the types of XML documents.

  • A lot of underground construction projects have been conducted by economical, social and military purposes in Korea for the last three decades. As a result, magnificent amount of data were obtained from geological site investigations, laboratory and field tests, design and field monitoring. But up to now, these valuable informations were neither systematically stored nor utilized efficiently resulting in a great loss of time and money. In this study, a database system named GeoINFO was developed using Microsoft Access 97 for management of informations which can be obtained from underground construction. The developed database system is especially designed to cover three major types of underground facilities-tunnels, underground storages and rock slopes and has multi-layered tree structures for data input. The system also has a unique indexing system for efficient data search using Visual Basic code.

  • Since XML allows users to define any tags, XML documents with various structures have been created. Accordingly, many studies on clustering and searching the XML documents based on the similarity of paths have been done in order to manage the documents efficiently. To retrieve XML documents having similar structures, the three-dimensional bitmap indexing technique uses a path as a unit when it creates an index. If a path structure is changed, the technique recognizes it as a new path. Thus, another technique to measure the similarity of paths was proposed. To compute the similarity between two paths, the technique compares every node of the paths. It causes unnecessary comparison of the nodes, which do not exist in common between the two paths. In this paper, we propose a new technique that minimizes the comparison using signatures and show the performance evaluation results of the technique. The comparison speed of proposed technique was 20 percent faster than the existing technique.

  • With the prevalence of multi-dimensional data such as images, content-based retrieval of data is becoming increasingly important. To handle multi-dimensional data, multi-dimensional index structures such as the R-tree, Rr-tree, TV-tree, and MVP-tree have been proposed. Numerous research results on how to effectively manipulate these structures have been presented during the last decade. Query processing strategies, which is important for reducing the processing time, is one such area of research. In this paper, we propose query processing algorithms for R-tree based structures. The novel aspect of these algorithms is that they make use of the notion of VP filtering, a concept borrowed from the MVP-tree. The filtering notion allows for delaying of computational overhead until absolutely necessary. By so doing, we attain considerable performance benefits while paying insignificant overhead during the construction of the index structure. We implemented our algorithms and carried out experiments to demonstrate the capability and usefulness of our method. Both for range query and incremental query, for all dimensional index trees, the response time using VP filtering was always shorter than without VP filtering. We quantitatively showed that VP filtering is closely related with the response time of the query.

  • Most decision support functions of spatial data warehouse rely on the OLAP operations upon a spatial cube. Meanwhile, higher performance is always guaranteed by indexing the cube, which stores huge amount of pre-aggregated information. Hierarchical Dwarf was proposed as a solution, which can be taken as an extension of the Dwarf, a compressed index for cube structures. However, it does not consider the spatial dimension and even aggregates incorrectly if there are redundant values at the lower levels. OLAP-favored Searching was proposed as a spatial hierarchy based OLAP operation, which employs the advantages of R-tree. Although it supports aggregating functions well against specified areas, it ignores the operations on the spatial dimensions. In this paper, an indexing approach, which aims at utilizing the concept hierarchy of the spatial cube for decision support, is proposed. The index consists of concept hierarchy trees of all dimensions, which are linked according to the tuples stored in the fact table. It saves storage cost by preventing identical trees from being created redundantly. Also, it reduces the OLAP operation cost by integrating the spatial and aspatial dimensions in the virtual concept hierarchy.

  • Recently, researches on a future position prediction of moving objects have been progressed as the importance of the future position retrieval increases. New index structures are required to efficiently retrieve the consecutive positions of moving objects. Existing index structures significantly degrade the search performance of the moving objects because the search operation makes the unnecessary extension of the node in the index structure. To solve this problem, we propose a space partition based index structure considering the mobility of moving objects. To deal with the overflow of a node, our index structure first merges it and the sibling node. If it is impossible to merge them, our method splits the overflow node in which moving properties of objects are considered. Our index structure is always partitioned into overlap free subregions when a node is split. Our split strategy chooses the split position by considering the parameters such as velocities, the escape time of the objects, and the update time of a node. In the internal node, the split position Is determined from preventing the cascading split of the child node. We perform various experiments to show that our index structure outperforms the existing index structures in terms of retrieval performance. Our experimental results show that our proposed index structure achieves about $17%{\sim}264%$ performance gains on current position retrieval and about $107%{\sim}19l%$ on future position retrieval over the existing methods.

  • The main memory DBMS(MMDBMS) efficiently supports various database applications that require high performance since it employs main memory rather than disk as a primary storage. In this paper, we discuss theexperiences obtained in developing the index manager of the Tachyon, a next-generation MMDBMS. The indexmanager is an essential sub-component of the DBMS used to speed up the retrieval of objects from a largevolume of a database in response to a certain search condition. Previous research efforts on indexing proposed various index structures. However, they hardly dealt with the practical issues occured in implementating an index manager on a target DBMS. In this paper, we touch these issues and present our experiences in developing the index manager on the Tachyon as solutions. The main issues touched are (1) compact representation of an indexentry, (2) support of variable-length keys, (3) support of multiple-attribute keys, (4) support of duplicated keys,(5) definition of external APls, (6) concurrency control, and (7) backup and recovery. We believe that ourcontribution would help MMDBMS developers highly reduce their trial-and-errors.

  • Efficient retrieval of image data is an important research issue in multimedia database. This paper proposes a new approach to a content-based image retrieval which allows queries to be composed of the local texture patterns and the slope components of contour points. The texture patterns extracted from the source image using the graylevel co-occurrence matrix and the slope components of contour points extracted from the binary image are converted into a internal feature representation of reduced dimensionality which preserves the perceptual similarity and those features can be used in creating efficient indexing structures for a content-based image retrieval. Experimental results of the image retrievalare presented to illustrate the usefulness of this approach that demonstrates the precision 82%, the recall 87% and the average rang 3.3 in content-based image data retrieval.
