We obtain two characterizations of a family of continuous probability distribution by independence property of record values.

Let X and Y be independent identically distributed nondegenerate random variables with common absolutely continuous probability distribution function F(x) and the corresponding probability density function f(x) and $E(X^2)$<${\infty}$. Put Z = max(X, Y) and W = min(X, Y). In this paper, it is proved that Z - W and Z + W or$(X-Y)^2$ and X + Y are independent if and only if X and Y have normal distribution.

In this paper, we evaluate cryptographic properties of a double random phase encoding (DRPE) scheme in the discrete Gyrator domain with avalanche and bit independence criterions. DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain is reported to have higher security than traditional DRPE in the Fourier domain because the rotation angle involved in the Gyrator transform is viewed as additional secret keys. However, our numerical experimental results demonstrate that the DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain has an excellent bit independence feature but does not possess a good avalanche effect property and hence needs to be improved to satisfy with acceptable avalanche effect that would be robust against statistical-based cryptanalysis. We compare our results with the avalanche and bit independence criterion (BIC) performances of the conventional DRPE scheme, and improve the avalanche effect of DRPE in the discrete Gyrator domain by integrating a photon counting imaging technique. Although the Gyrator transform-based image cryptosystem has been studied, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on a cryptographic evaluation of discrete Gyrator transform with avalanche and bit independence criterions.

This study investigated the expectations Of 186 Korean mothers regarding the self-regulatory behaviors of their l-to 5-year old child. A questionnaire for mothers was prepared which consists of nine categories identified in previous research : safety rules, personal property rules, interpersonal rules, food-related rules, independence requests, self-care rules, family routines, delay, manners, obedience rules, and academic skills and attitude. Data consisted of questionnaires completed by the mothers. Findings were that (1) mothers had high expectations regarding self-regulatory behaviors about safety and independence but low expectations regarding family routines and personal property self-regulation, (2) their expectations increased with age of child, (3) the pattern of expectations did not change with age, and (4) expectations were higher with lower educational background of the mother.

In this paper, we study the maximal property of the volume of the convex hull of d-dimensional independent random vectors. We show that the volume of the random convex hull from a multivariate location-scale family indexed by ${\Sigma}$ is stochastically maximized in simple stochastic order when ${\Sigma}$ is diagonal. The claim can be applied to a broad class of multivariate distributions that include skewed/unskewed multivariate t-distributions. We numerically investigate the proven stochastic relationship between the dependent and independent random convex hulls with the Gaussian random convex hull. The numerical results confirm our theoretical findings and the maximal property of the volume of the independent random convex hull.

Presented in this paper is a characterization of Weibull distribution by an independence property of upper record values that X_k has a Weibull distribution if and only if ${\frac{X_U(m)}{X_U(n)}}$ and X_U(s) are independent for 1 ≤ m < n < s.

A dimensionality assessment procedure DETECT uses the property of being near zero of conditional covariances as an indication of unidimensionality .This study provides the convergent properties to zero of conditional covariances when the dta is unidimensional, with which DETECT extends its theoretical grounds.

This paper examines the effects of intellectual property protection policies on upstream firms' R&D investments in order to derive policy implications in relation to the fostering of the intermediate goods industry. To that end, the dependence on import of intermediate goods and the degree of protection of intellectual property rights are introduced into the model to analyze the effects of R&D investments on the dependence on imports and the effects of intellectual property rights protection policies on the level of R&D investments in order and the social welfare effects are also checked. The policy implications derived in this paper, which used an oligopolistic market model with a vertical specialization structure, are as follows. As R&D investments expand, upstream firm begins to have price competitiveness, the dependence on import of intermediate goods by downstream firm decreases, and social welfare increases. That is, in order to strengthen the independence of the intermediate goods industry, R&D investments by upstream firm should be expanded, and to promote this, the government should strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights.
