  • The prostatitis is characterized as relatively incurable, chronic and recurrent illness. Because of this property, we have a difficulty in treating this illness. The purpose of this study is evaluating the efficiency of herb medicine, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy to the prostatitis. A clinical observation was made on two patients with chronic prostatitis who had perineal pain, pubic pain, testicular pain, painful urination, frequency and dysuria. They were treated with herb medicine, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy for four weeks and symptoms were considerably decreased. This result suggests that oriental medical therapy is useful enough to treat the prostatic diseases. Therefore the further study of the approach and application of this treatment on prostatitis would be necessary.

  • Objectives : To direct methods of management and development of herbs and their derived products, and at the end of this study to inform the process of making new herbal drug regulations in Korea. Methods : This study analyzed the regulations and laws of western medicine drugs. Results : We have got some herbal prescriptions which are not in the eleven books of oriental medicine now in use but which have proved effective. We need to establish standards for permissions to produce medical products through those prescriptions. Besides, we need the special permissions to produce herbal products through prescriptions, especially those which have been used to treat incurable diseases. And, we can contribute to globalization of oriental medicine and to well situating of herb products and medicinal acupunctures if we produce them according to international standards. It is thought that herbal medicine has no side effect in the medical society in Korea. But, it is getting popular to administer herbal medicine and western medicine together. Thus, the side effects of taking both medicines at the same time should be documented. Conclusions : Herbal medicines and herbal products should be under the control over the whole process of production, circulation, and sales. Now, it is time for herbal medicine to be known to all over the world. Therefore, herbal medicine must meet and adhere to the standards set by the western society and WHO.

  • Mucous membrane pemphigoid is uncommom disease in oral cavity and synonymous with cicatricial pemphigoid. This disease is caused by autoimmune reaction that autoantibody reacts antigen located in basement membrane and epithelium is separated from underlying connective tissue. It affects female over sixth decade, commonly. Oral mucosa, especially gingiva is common site but conjunctival, nasal, pharyngeal, laryngeal, esophageal, varginal mucosa and skin are involved. Intraoral findings show Nikolsky sign, irregular erythema, erosion, vesicle, and ulceration at mucous membrane. To differentiate from diseases of positive Nikolsky sign, should perform histologic, immunologic test. Histologic features show subbasilar cleft and direct immunologic features show IgG, C3 deposits at basement membrane in linear pattern. Mucous membrane pemphigoid is incurable disease because symptoms are repetitively improved or worsed for several years. Patiens are commonly managed with topical and systemic steroid. To avoid side effects of prolonged steroid therapy and to maintain immunosupressive effects, combination therapy of azathioprine with steroid is effective. This case reports that mucous membrane pemphigoid is diagnosed based on clinical and histologic features, is treated with topical, systemic steroid and azathioprine therapy.

  • Recently, there has been extremely active in the research of stem cell biology. Stem cells have excellent potential for being the ultimate source of transplantable cells for many different tissues. Researchers hope to use stem cells to repair or replace diseased or damaged organs, leading to new treatments for human disorders that are currently incurable, including diabetes, spinal cord injury and brain diseases. There are primary sources of stem cells like embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Stem cells from embryos were known to give rise to every type of cell. However, embryonic stem cells still have a lot of disadvantages. First, transplanted cells sometimes grow into tumors. Second, the human embryonic stem cells that are available for research would be rejected by a patient's immune system. Tissue-matched transplants could be made by either creating a bank of stem cells from more human embryos, or by cloning a patient's DNA into existing stem cells to customize them. However, this is laborious and ethically contentious. These problems could be overcome by using adult stem cells, taken from a patient, that are treated to remove problems and then put back. Nevertheless, some researchers do not convince that adult stem cells could, like embryonic ones, make every tissue type. Human stem cell research holds enormous potential for contributing to our understanding of fundamental human biology. In this review, we discuss the recent progress in stem cell research and the future therapeutic applications.

  • Although the demand for histopathological examinations has been increasing, medical accidents in management of specimens also have been increasing because most of the examinations are processed manually which can cause careless handing, confusing information and mismatching during the procedure. In the future, histopatological examination will be used frequently for handing incurable diseases and verification of new drug. Thus, efficient and error-free management system for handling personalized medical history and test results is infallibly necessary. In this paper, I have proposed an integrated printing system for informatization of histopathological examination that support the u-Healthcare environment based on RFID in near future. The proposed system supports systematization of whole examination process and information of pathological samples. This system will contribute to reduction of costs, improvement of operational efficiency, and mostly fundamental prevention of medical accidents.

  • In this study, we examine Cho Heon-yeong's medical theory about neurasthenia by looking at the contents and prescriptions of 『Neurasthenia Treatment (神經衰弱症治療法)』. Discourse about neurasthenia caused many problems in Joseon society during Japanese colonial period. This book consists of fist volume about general summary, second volume about treatment and prescription list. Cho Heon-yeong's theory in this book has following characteristics. First, eclecticism of Korean Medicine and Western medicine appears in the reinterpretation of Western medicine diseases and the acceptance of some Western medical theories and treatments. Second, the Korean medical disease name of neurasthenia is 'Simgizeung (心氣證)' for relevance with seven emotions (七情) and mind (神). Third, he evaluates neurasthenia as not a dangerous and incurable disease, but rather a positive phenomena of the mind and body. Fourth, he treated neurastenia by compromising dispersion (解鬱) and invigoration (補虛).

  • The strengthening of Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) for clinical research on advanced regenerative medicine reflecting the 3 Principles of the Belmont Report (Respect, Beneficence, Justice) is very important. The research institution IRB should naturally be in charge of managing the clinical research process. And it is crucial to reinforce HRPP for the protection of research subjects in institutions conducting advanced regeneration clinical research. So, it is needed to establish a Protection System for Advanced Regenerative Medical Research Subjects composed of clinical research management communication system for advanced regenerative medicine between KAIRB (Korean Association of IRB) of research institutes and National Management Agency for Advanced Regenerative Medical Research. In advanced regenerative medicine clinical research to verify safety and efficacy of the investigational drugs to the subjects with rare and incurable diseases rather than to treat the patients, it is hoped that a management system that guarantees the scientific characteristics of research and the rights of research subjects would be well organized and operated.
