Decrease in Genetic Variation of Overwintering Populations of the Diamondback Moth during Seasonal Occurrence (배추좀나방의 계절적 발생과 월동집단의 유전적 분화 감소)

  • The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, overwinters in some protected areas in Korea. Using a sex pheromone trap, the adults were monitored since the occurrence of the overwintering populations. In Andong, P. xylostella exhibited four adult peaks in a year. Biological characters, such as cold tolerance, insecticide susceptibility, and developmental rate, were analyzed and showed a significant variation among different local overwintering populations. Population genetic variation was assessed with molecular markers, in which the initial high genetic variation among the overwintering populations decreased with the progress of seasons. These results suggests that there may be a significant migration of P. xylostella to decrease the genetic variation among the different local populations that are different in biological characters.

Energy-Aware Video Coding Selection for Solar-Powered Wireless Video Sensor Networks

  • A wireless image sensor node collecting image data for environmental monitoring or surveillance requires a large amount of energy to transmit the huge amount of video data. Even though solar energy can be used to overcome the energy constraint, since the collected energy is also limited, an efficient energy management scheme for transmitting a large amount of video data is needed. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the number of blackout nodes and increase the amount of gathered data by selecting an appropriate video coding method according to the energy condition of the node in a solar-powered wireless video sensor network. This scheme allocates the amount of energy that can be used over time in order to seamlessly collect data regardless of night or day, and selects a high compression coding method when the allocated energy is large and a low compression coding when the quota is low. Thereby, it reduces the blackout of the relay node and increases the amount of data obtained at the sink node by allowing the data to be transmitted continuously. Also, if the energy is lower than operating normaly, the frame rate is adjusted to prevent the energy exhaustion of nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme suppresses the energy exhaustion of the relay node and collects more data than other schemes.

Anticancer Effects of the Hsp90 Inhibitor 17-Demethoxy-Reblastatin in Human Breast Cancer MDA-MB-231 Cells

  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) possesses a higher rate of distant recurrence and a poorer prognosis than other breast cancer subtypes. Interestingly, most of the heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) client proteins are oncoproteins, and some are closely related to unfavorable factors of TNBC patients. 17-Demethoxy-reblastatin (17-DR), a novel non-benzoquinone-type geldanamycin analog, exhibited potent Hsp90 ATPase inhibition activity. In this study, the anticancer effects of 17-DR on TNBC MDA-MB-231 cells were investigated. These results showed that 17-DR inhibited cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and suppressed cell invasion and migration in the MDA-MB-231 cells. Down-regulation of the key Hsp90-dependent tumor-driving molecules, such as RIP1 and MMP-9, by 17-DR may be related to these effects. Taken together, our results suggest that 17-DR has potential as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of TNBC.

Anti-cancer and -Metastatic Effects of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG Extract on Human Malignant Melanoma Cells, A375P and A375SM

  • Human malignant melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer which has been rising at a greater rate than any other cancers. Although various new therapeutic methods have been developed in previous studies, this disease has properties of high proliferation and metastasis rate which remain obstacles that have lead to a poor prognosis in patients. It has been reported that a specific Lactobacillus extract has anti-cancer and -metastasis effect in vitro and in vivo. However, previous research has not specified precisely what effect the Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) extract has had on human malignant melanomas. In this study, we showed that the LGG extract has anti-cancer and -metastasis effects on the human malignant melanoma cell lines, A375P and A375SM. At first, it was found that, while the LGG extract affects human neonatal dermal fibroblasts slightly, it induced the dose-dependent anti-cancer effect on A375P and A375SM by a WST-1 proliferation assay. As a result of a real-time PCR analysis, the expression patterns of several genes related to cell cycle, proliferation, and apoptosis were modulating in a manner that inhibited the growth of both malignant melanoma cell lines after the treatment of the LGG extract. Furthermore, genes related to the epithelial-mesenchymal transition were down-regulated, and migration rates were also decreased significantly by the LGG extract. Our study showed that the LGG extract could be used as a potential therapeutic source.

A Study on the Relation between the Hollowization and the Phenomenon of Decreasing and Aging Population in Rural Villages - Focused on Geumsan-gun - (농촌마을의 공동화와 과소·고령화 현상의 관련성 연구 - 충남 금산군을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the hollowization in rural villages which causes marginal villages appears in Korean rural villages and whether the hollowization has relation with decrease and aging of population or not. For achieving the research objective, survey was carried out focused on Geumsan-gun. As a result, it confirmed that rural out-migration and rural decline especially in 'people', 'land(economic situation)' and 'community' have being progressed. Also variance analysis and regression analysis were executed with using the number of population and the ratio of people over 65 as dependent variables and using each survey contents(variables) as independent variables. The results of analysis showed that the ratio of people over 65(+), the income level per household(-), the rate of fallow lands(+), the number of empty houses(+), programs for urban-rural interchange(+), and the implementing public projects(+), etc. have a relation with the number of population(-) and the number of population(-), the income level per household(-), the rate of fallow lands(+), the number of empty houses(+), activities of communities(+), and the implementing public projects(+), etc. have a relation with the ratio of people over 65(+) (+: increase, -: decrease). So the hollowization in people', 'land(economic situation)' and 'community' has direct relation with decrease and aging of population in rural areas.

A prospective study of fully covered self-expandable metal stents for refractory benign pancreatic duct strictures

  • Background/Aims: Fully covered self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMSs) are a relatively novel option for treating painful main pancreatic duct refractory strictures in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Herein, we aimed to assess the efficacy, feasibility, and safety of FCSEMSs in this patient group. Methods: This prospective single-center study included patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde pancreatography with FCSEMS placement. The primary endpoints were the technical and clinical success rates. A reduction in visual analog scale pain score of >50% compared with that before stent placement was defined as clinical success. Secondary endpoints were resolution of pancreatic strictures on fluoroscopy during endoscopic retrograde pancreatography and the development of stent-related adverse events. Results: Thirty-six patients were included in the analysis. The technical success rate was 100% (n=36) and the clinical success rate was 86.1% (n=31). There was a significant increase in stricture diameter from 1.7 mm to 3.5 mm (p<0.001) after stent removal. The mean visual analog scale pain score showed statistically significant improvement. At 19 months of follow-up, 55.6% of the patients were asymptomatic. Stent migration (16.7%), intolerable abdominal pain (8.3%), development of de novo strictures (8.3%), and mild pancreatitis (2.8%) were the most common adverse events. Conclusions: FCSEMS placement showed good technical and clinical success rates for achieving pain relief in patients with refractory main pancreatic duct strictures.

Numerical Study of Contaminant Pathway based on Generic-scenarios and Contaminant-based Scenarios of Vadose Zone (범용 시나리오 및 오염물질 시나리오에 기반한 불포화대 오염물질 경로에 대한 수치모의 연구)

  • This study tested various assumptions that simplified the configuration of the numerical model for unsaturated zone's contaminant transport to simulate the pathway to exposed point. This study investigated the contaminant migration through in the pollutant exposure pathway of vadoze zone for risk assessment of the contaminated site. For the purpose, generic scenarios as well as contaminant-based scenarios were simulated using the numerical code for transport of the contaminant in the pathway. The finite-difference one-dimensional transport with adsorption and biodegradation were considered, and it also assumed that the initial concentration was also depleted over time. The results of the generic-scenario show that as the groundwater infiltration rate decreases, the longer the path from the source to the groundwater level, the lower the concentration at the point of inflow into the groundwater level. In particular, in the case of high biodegradation rate and rapid depletion of pollutant sources, statistically outliers were found in the simulated results and generic scenarios was good at prediction.

Growth Inhibition and Apoptosis Induction of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells by Apogossypolone

  • Aims and Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in the male reproductive system, which causes the second most cancer deaths of males, and control of angiogenesis in prostate lesions is of obvious importance. This study assessed the effect of apogossypolone (ApoG2) on proliferation and apoptosis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Subjects and Methods: HUVECs were treated with different concentrations of ApoG2. The survival rate of HUVECs were determined by MTT assay. Utrastructural changes of HUVECs were assessed with transmission electron microscopy. Apoptosis in HUVECs was analyzed by flow cytometry and cell migration by Boyden chamber assay. Matrigel assays were used to quantify the development of tube-like networks. Results: ApoG2 significantly inhibited HUVEC growth even at 24 h (P<0.05). The inhibitory effect of ApoG2 is more obvious as the concentration and the culture time increased (P<0.05). These results indicate that ApoG2 inhibits the proliferation of HUVECs in a time- and concentration-dependent manner with increase of the apoptosis rate. Besides, ApoG2 reduced the formation of total pseudotubule length and network branches of HUVECs. Conclusions: The results suggest that ApoG2 inhibits angiogenesis of HUVECs by growth inhibition and apoptosis induction.

THE EFFECTS OF FIBRONECTIN & GROWTH FACTOR ALONE OR COMBINED APPLICATION ON THE ACTIVITY OF GHUMAN GINGIVAL FIBROBLASTS AND PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT CELLS (Fibronectin과 성장인자의 단독 혹은 복합투여가 배양 인체 치은섬유모세포 및 치은인대세포의 활성에 미치는 효과)

  • The selective migration, attachment and proliferation of periodontal ligament cells are the desired goal of periodontal regeneration therapy. Fibronectin is well known for an attachment protein for dentin surface. Also, Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) is well known to enhance the periodontal regeneration. The purpose of this study was to evaluation the effect of fibronection and FGF on the attachment rate and the cellular activity. Human gingival fibroblast and periodontal ligament cells were cultured from the teeth extracted for non-periodontal reson. Cultured human gingival fibroblast and periodontal ligament cells in vitro were treated with fibronectin and FGF a various dosage and culture times. Cellular activity was examined by MTT assay. The results of this study was demonstrated that cell attachment rate of experimental group was under the control value at 1st, 2nd, 3rd incubation day. But, at 3rd incubation day, attchment value tended to return to the control value. In case of fibronectin alone application, cellular activity was decreased than that of control at 1st, 2nd incubation day. But 3rd day, cellular activity was returned to the control value. The activity of gingival fibroblast in FGF alone application was decreased thatn that of control at each incubation day. But activity of periodontal cell group was increased cell activities at 2nd, 3rd day. Additionally cellular activity of fibronectin & FGF combined application on gingival fibroblast group was similar to control value at incubation day. But activity of periodontal ligament cell group was increased at 2nd, 3rd day compared with control group.This study demonstrated that combined application of fibronectin & FGF induced the selective chemotaxis for periodontal ligament cell in vitro.

Characteristics of Channel Bend Reach and Shape of Cross-Section (유로 만곡부 특성과 단면현상)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine morphometric characteristics in a channel bend reach. The new shape factor is suggested that channel deformation rate of cross section (${\Delta}A_s$) showed the variation of concentrated location of force due to the current and the variation of erosional section in alluvial channel. In the downstream direction the meaning of decreasing "${\Delta}A_s$" is the stability of channel bed. This study was analyzed morphological characteristics of cross section-width of channel ($W_s$), width to the thalweg ($W_{th}$), maximum depth ($D_{th}$)-on the Guem River, and typical cross sections in channel bend were proposed. The channel migration rate (M) for the study river was represented that the zones of curvature ratio (R/W) with 2~4 were larger 12% than other zones.
