  • Ultra wideband (UWB) technologies have been developed to exploit a new spectrum resource in substances and to realize ultra-high-speed communication, high precision geolocation, and other applications. The energy of UWB signal is extremely spread from near DC to a few GHz. This means that the interference between conventional narrowband systems and UWB systems is inevitable. However, the interference effects had not previously been studied from UWB wireless systems to conventional mobile wireless systems sharing the frequency bands such as Cellular CDMA and Korean PCS. This paper experimentally evaluates the interference from two kinds of UWB sources, namely a direct-sequence spread-spectrum UWB source and an impulse radio UWB source, to a Cellular CDMA and K-PCS digital transmission system. The average frame error rate degradation of each system arc presented. From these experimental results, we show that in all practical cases UWB system can coexist with Cellular CDMA and K-PCS terminal without causing any dangerous interference.

  • In the noncoherent methods for UWB-IR (ultra-wideband impulse radio), block coded modulation (BCM) is better than the transmitted reference (TR) systems in terms of the energy efficiency and data rate. However, even BCM suffers from the performance degradation in the presence of strong inter-frame interference and inter symbol interference. We propose the transmitted reference based on the BCM (TR-BCM) which is the hybrid system of TR and BCM. Performance evaluation shows that the performance of TR-BCM is better than that of BCM in the high SNR range.

  • A new modulation scheme called multicoded-pulse position modulation (MC-PPM) is proposed for an ultrawideband (UWB) impulse radio communication system. The multicoded signal is generated by using several orthogonal codes for transmitting data simultaneously. Then, each multi-level value of the multicoded signal is converted to pulse position which results in not only an improved data rate, but also a processing gain in reception, delivering the power-efficient benefit of PPM and guaranteeing the low pulse energy for UWB systems. We notice that the modulation of multi-level values of the multicoded signal to pulse position is more efficient in terms of achievable data rate than the modulation of transmitting data based on other PPM schemes within given bandwidth and pulse energy. Therefore, as a performance measure, we focus on the achievable data rate (link capacity) of the proposed scheme and analyze it theoretically. Through simulation, we compare the link capacity of the MC-PPM scheme and other PPM schemes, such as M -ary PPM and multiple PPM. With the fixed bandwidth and same pulse energy condition, the UWB system based on the proposed MC-PPM scheme shows good link capacity and an increased data rate as L increases, which is contrary to other PPM schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze M-ary pulse order time hopping multiple access ultra wideband (PO-THMA UWB) system using modified Hermite polynomial (MHP). The MHP pulses have a mutually orthogonal property between different ordered pulses and that property makes simultaneous transmission at the same time slot regardless of collision in the THMA-UWB system. Therefore, we derive the cross-correlation furlction of MHP pulses and analyze the BER of the proposed system and show that the BER performance and the transmission capacity are improved dramatically when compared with those of conventional THMA-UWB system.

  • In this paper, we quantiatively analyze the broadband CDMA systems with high chip rate, which virually eliminates the multipath fading effects by distinguishing each reflected paths in the process of despreading. We model the broadband multipath propagation channel with random time-variant impulse response as a linear filter of tapped delay line to evaluate the performance of broadband CDMA systems in multipath fading environment. This statistical model, based on extensive experimental data, was established to characterize the urban radio propagation medium in various environments. We perform computer simulation of the transmission and reception of broadband CDMA systems by applying it to abve channel model. From the simulation results, we confirm that the broadband CDMA systems inherenly reduce the effects of multipath fading phenomena which causes to degrade the performance of mobile communication systems, based on the results of eye-diagram and BER curve.

  • A fully integrated single ended IR-UWB receiver is implemented using 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The UWB receiver adopts the non-coherent architecture, which simplifies the RF architecture and reduces power consumption. The receiver consists of single-ended 2-stage LNAs, S2D, envelope detector, VGA, and comparator. The measured results show that sensitivity is -80.8 dBm at 1 Mbps and BER of $10^{-3}$. The receiver uses no external balun and the chip size is only $1.8{\times}0.9$ mm. The consumed current is very low with 13 mA at 1.8 V supply and the energy per bit performance is 23.4 nJ/bit.

  • In this paper, derived monocycle pulse that application is possible within permission frequency band (3.1 ~ 10.6GHz) that establish in FCC. Also, PPM modulated TH IR system simulator is designed in AWGN environment. It is analyzed monocycle pulse specific property and system performance using simulator. Also, analyzed BER performances of IR system in multiple access interference environment using proposed parameters. According to result, application of possible pulse duration$(t_n)$ is very limited by 0.04~0.0326 ns in permission frequency range that establish in FCC. In the case of same pulse signal power, we could know that system performance changes by $N_s$ regardless of pulse duration. IR system that need high speed transmission more than 50 Mbps in multiple access interference environment could know that very serious performance decrease by multiple access Interference happens.

  • In wireless communications environments, a link adaptation technique that selects the proper rate from among several transmission rates is adopted to cope with variations in channel status. In block coded modulation, the frame time and/or the block length can be adjusted to the channel status. A smaller frame time can cause inter-frame interference (IFI), however, a larger frame time can reduce the data rate. Therefore, frame time is the design factor decided by a tradeoff between performance and the data rate. This paper presents a method to determine the frame time based on the processing gain for the channel model, CM1~CM4, recommended by IEEE 802.15a. Also, a link adaptation technique for block coded modulation is proposed for efficient communications by varying the frame time and the block length. Through simulation, link adaptation can be carried out with a step size of 2~5 nsec in a frame time range of 14~ 50 nsec for channel models CM1~CM4.

  • Hopping sequences of Time Hopped Ultra Wideband Impulse Radio (TH-UWB-IR) system are to mitigate multipath fading and to provide the multiple access chances for multi users. For the reliable communications, the same pulses are repeatedly transmitted for a bit duration based on hopping sequences. The proposed decoding scheme utilizes the intervals of inter-codes in a frame where the short interval between two pulses leads to the large interference by the multipath fading. For a single user case, the proposed method obtains 0.5dB gain over the conventional method at BER=$10^{-3}$. Decoding performance of repeated pulses can be increased using the property of the hopping sequences of multi users.

  • This paper proposes a selective-weighted energy detection (S-WED) and a synchronization algorithm appropriate for it in IR-UWB system. Energy detectors that are practical in terms of implementation are employed widely for noncoherent reception in IR-UWB systems. However, they show low performance due to using the energy samples captured at symbol rate. For this reason, weighted energy detectors are developed to improve the performance of EDs. Hence, for WED, not only synchronization but also the weight coefficients are needed to be obtained prior to data detection. Meanwhile, the optimal weighting coefficients of WEDs are known to be energy values. Therefore, synchronization and the weighting coefficients can be obtained simultaneously. This paper proposes an S-WED and a simple synchronization algorithm for it in which sub-intervals having energies under a certain level are excluded in energy accumulation resulting in a simpler WED with a bit performance increase in low SNR region. The proposed algorithm is verified through simulations using the preamble symbol and channel models defined in the IEEE 802.15.4a.
