  • "Structural surface becomes an antenna." This term, CAS, indicates antenna embedding in structural surfaces. The CAS is composed of several composite laminates and Nomex honeycombs, and microstrip antenna elements are inserted between layers with designed configurations. Constituent materials are selected considering electrical contributions as well as mechanical performances. Antenna design with adhesive films are impossible because of their thin and rough distributions between honeycomb and substrate. Therefore, adhesive effects on antenna performances in CAS are experimentally investigated, CAS with targeted impedance and radiation characteristics are designed considering adhesive effects. multilayer

  • In this study, carbon-coated porous nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and the performance of Li[Ni0.93Co0.07]O2 (NC) synthesized by electrospinning (E-NC) and co-precipitation (C-NC) was compared. E-NC had a discharge capacity of 206 mAh g-1 at 0.1C (17 mA/g), which is 10% higher than that of C-NC (189.2 mAh g-1). E-NC shows a high-rate performance of 118.32 mAh g-1 (61.7%) at 5C (850 mA/g), which is 50% higher than that of C-NC (78.22 mAh g-1 = 45.7%). Charge transfer of the carbon-coated porous nanofiber E-NC decreased by 35% compared to C-NC after 20 cycles as observed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results of this study show that the nanofiber structure with carbon coating shortens the Li-ion diffusion path, improves electrical conductivity, resulting in excellent rate performance.

  • This paper presents the effects of the position of the split of a split-ring resonator (SRR) on the performance of a composite broadband printed dipole antenna. The antenna is made of two printed dipole arms enclosed by two rectangular and identically printed SRRs. One dipole arm and the SRR are printed on the top side of the substrate, while the other dipole arm and SRR are printed on the bottom side of the same substrate. By changing the position of the split on the SRR, different antenna characteristic values are obtained, namely, for impedance bandwidth and radiation patterns. The split position is thus a critical parameter in antenna design, because it influences the antenna's major performance immensely. Different split positions and their consequences for antenna performance are demonstrated and discussed. The antenna generates linearly polarized radiations, and it is computationally characterized for broadband characteristics. The optimized compact antenna has overall dimensions of 9.6 mm × 74.4 mm × 0.508 mm (0.06λ × 0.469λ × 0.0032λ at 1.895 GHz) with a measured fractional bandwidth of 60.31% (1.32 to 2.46 GHz for |S11| <-10 dB) and a radiation efficiency of >88%.

  • This paper reviews a study about sound reflection control using an active sound absorber. An active sound absorber includes sound transmitting and receiving piezocomposite sensor layers molded by water tight epoxy, and connected with a feedback controller. The multi-layer sensors and the controller consists a closed feedback loop, whose intrinsic characteristics shows excellent impedance matching performance within specified frequency band, and consequently, minimizes reflection waves. Multilayer sound transmission model is derived based on one dimensional model, and its performance is verified with experiment using a pulse tube setup.

  • Fundamental aspects of creating passivation layers for corrosion resistance in nuclear engineering applications, specifically the ability to form complete layers versus porous ones, are being explored in this study. Utilizing a laser ablation technique, 1,064 nm fire at 10 Hz with 60 pulses per shot and 0.5 mm between impact points, aluminum samples are treated in an attempt to create a fully formed passivation layer that will be tested in a LiCl-KCl eutectic salt. By placing these samples into an electrochemical environment mimicking a pyroprocessing system, corrosion rates, resistances and material characteristics are tested for one week and then compared between treated and untreated samples. In initial testing, linear sweep voltammetry indicates corrosion current density for the untreated sample at -0.038 mA·cm-2 and treated samples at -0.024 mA·cm-2 and -0.016 mA·cm-2, respectively. This correlates to a control sample corrosion rate of -0.205 mm·yr-1 and treated rates of -0.130 mm·yr-1 and -0.086 mm·yr-1 for samples 1 and 2. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy circuits show application of a longer-lasting porous passivation layer on the treated metal, compared to the naturally forming layer. However, the current technique fails to create a uniform protection layer across the sample.

  • A heavy oil of low quality has been mainly used in the diesel engine of the merchant ship as the oil price has been significantly jumped for several years. Thus, a combustion chamber of the engine has been often exposed to severely corrosive environment more and more because temperature of the exhaust gas of the combustion chamber has been getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. As a result, wear and corrosion of the engine parts such as exhaust valve, piston crown and cylinder head surrounded with combustion chamber are more serious compared to the other parts of the engine. Therefore, an optimum repair welding for these engine parts is very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. In this study, 1.25Cr-0.5Mo filler metal was welded with SMAW method in the forged steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected and base metal zones were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The weld metal and base metal zones exhibited the highest and lowest values of hardness respectively. And, the corrosion resistance of the heat affected and weld metal zones was also increased than that of the base metal zone. Furthermore, it appeared that the corrosive products with red color and local corrosion like as a pitting corrosion were more frequently observed on the surface of the base metal zone compared to the heat affected and weld metal zones. Consequently, it is suggested that the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of the piston crown can be predominantly improved by repair welding method using the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo electrode.

  • This paper presents a comparison of antenna factor characteristics computed by the Method of Moments(MoM) and the electromotive force(EMF) method for a calculable dipole antenna with a hybrid balun. An expression for the antenna factor is formulated using the concept of power mismatch loss. The input impedance and effective length of the antenna, which are in the formula of the antenna factor, are calculated using the two methods. The results show that the antenna factors are agreed within 0.24 dB, although the maximum difference between the input impedances obtained from the two methods is about 17 ${\Omega}$.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of Mn and Co co-doping on defects, J-E curves and grain boundary characteristics of ZnO-$Bi_2O_3$ (ZB) varistor. Admittance spectra and dielectric functions show two bulk defects of $Zn_i^{{\cdot}{\cdot}}$ (0.17~0.18 eV) and $V_o^{\cdot}$ (0.30~0.33 eV). From J-E characteristics the nonlinear coefficient (${\alpha}$) and resistivity (${\rho}_{gb}$) of pre-breakdown region decreased as 30 to 24 and 5.1 to 0.08 $G{\Omega}cm$ with sintering temperature, respectively. The double Schottky barrier of grain boundaries in ZB(MCo) ($ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Mn_3O_4-Co_3O_4$) could be electrochemically single type. However, its thermal stability was slightly disturbed by ambient oxygen because the apparent activation energy of grain boundaries was changed from 0.64 eV at lower temperature to 1.06 eV at higher temperature. It was revealed that a co-doping of Mn and Co in ZB reduced the heterogeneity of the barrier in grain boundaries and stabilized the barrier against an ambient temperature (${\alpha}$-factor= 0.136).

  • In this paper, a monopole antenna applicable to WLAN/WiMAX system is designed and fabricated. The proposed antenna is designed to have three lines and one slit based on microstrip feeding to have triple band characteristics. We optimized the lengths and slits of the three lines to obtain the required characteristics for this paper. The proposed antenna has $32.0mm(W2+W3){\times}47.1mm$ (L3+L4+L5+L8) on a dielectric substrate of $42.5mm(W1){\times}52mm(L1){\times}1.0mm$ size. From the fabrication and measurement results, bandwidths of 158 MHz (813 to 971MHz), 630 MHz (2.10 to 2.73GHz) and 1190 MHz (4.83 to 6.02GHz) were obtained based on the impedance bandwidth. The fabricated antenna also obtained the measured gain and radiation pattern in the required triple band.

  • In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Silicon/Carbon anode materials were analyzed to improve the cycle stability of silicon as an anode materials of lithium ion battery. Porous silicon was prepared from TEOS by the $st{\ddot{o}}ber$ method and the magnesiothermic reduction method. Silicon/Carbon anode materials were synthesized by varying the mass ratio between porous silicon and pitch. Physical properties of the prepared Silicon/Carbon anode materials were analyzed by XRD and TGA. Also the electrochemical performances of Silicon/Carbon anode materials were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC : DEC = 1 : 1 vol%). The Silicon/Carbon anode composite (silicon : carbon = 5 : 95 in weight) has better capacity (453 mAh/g) than those of other composition cells. The cycle performance has an excellent capacity retention from 2nd cycle to 30th cycle.
