The large amount of smoke produced near Lake Baikal was transported to Northeast Asia with high AOT (Aerosol Optical Thickness) as seen in satellite images. Aerosol retrieval using a separation technique was applied to MODIS (Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer) and SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor) data observed during 14-22 May 2003. Large AOT, 2.0~5.0 was observed on 20 May 2003 over Korea due to the influence of the long range transport of smoke aerosol plume from the Russian fires, resulting in high PM10 concentration was observed at the surface.
Since Leith and Upatnieks demonstrated the first optical hologram in 1964, hologram technology has attracted a great deal of interest in a wide range of optical fields owing to its potential use in future optical applications such as holographic imaging and optical data storage. Although there have been considerable efforts to develop holographic technologies using conventional optics, critical issues still hinder future development. Recently, metasurfaces composed of artificially fabricated subwavelength structures have been considered as novel holographic devices that show an unprecedented ability to control electromagnetic waves. In this review, we outline the recent progress in metasurface holography. A general introduction to several types of metasurface holography categorized based on their physics and application is provided. Then, our personal perspective on the future of this field is discussed.

The effect of surfactants with different chain length on the drying dynamics of nanosized dispersion droplets and on the final morphology of the grains formed after water evaporation is investigated experimentally. An acoustic levitator was used to examine the drying dynamics of single droplets and SEM imaging was used to characterise the morphology of the final dried grains. Results show that the drying of drops with high molecular weight surfactants leads to more irregular grains and that the grain morphology is related to surface tension driven instability of the evaporating droplets which may lead to formation of hollow dried grains.
I will start with presenting new results on the stellar populations of galaxies at a redshift of z=9-11, when the universe was only a few hundred million years old. By combining Hubble Space Telescope observations with Spitzer imaging data, I will show how challenging it is currently to measure basic physical properties of these objects such as star-formation rates, stellar masses and stellar ages. In particular, the current measurements greatly depend on the assumptions (priors) for the spectral energy distribution modeling. Finally, I will discuss how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will revolutionize this field next year and allow us to probe and characterize the first generation of galaxies in much greater detail. Specifically, I will present an overview of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) teams involving 950 hours of observation.

The magnification technique has recently become popular in bone radiography, mammography and other diagnostic examination. However, because of the finite size of X-ray focal spot, the magnification influences various imaging properties with resolution, noise and contrast. The purpose of study is to investigate the influence of magnification and focal spot size on digital imaging system using eDQE (effective detective quantum efficiency). Effective DQE is a metric reflecting overall system response including focal spot blur, magnification, scatter and grid response. The adult chest phantom employed in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was used to derive eDQE from eMTF (effective modulation transfer function), eNPS (effective noise power spectrum), scatter fraction and transmission fraction. According to results, spatial frequencies that eMTF is 10% with the magnification factor of 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 are 2.76, 2.21, 1.78, 1.49 and 1.26 lp/mm respectively using small focal spot. The spatial frequencies that eMTF is 10% with the magnification factor of 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 are 2.21, 1.66, 1.25, 0.93 and 0.73 lp/mm respectively using large focal spot. The eMTFs and eDQEs decreases with increasing magnification factor. Although there are no significant differences with focal spot size on eDQE (0), the eDQEs drops more sharply with large focal spot than small focal spot. The magnification imaging can enlarge the small size lesion and improve the contrast due to decrease of effective noise and scatter with air-gap effect. The enlargement of the image size can be helpful for visual detection of small image. However, focal spot blurring caused by finite size of focal spot shows more significant impact on spatial resolution than the improvement of other metrics resulted by magnification effect. Based on these results, appropriate magnification factor and focal spot size should be established to perform magnification imaging with digital radiography system.
Multiple color selection techniques are successful in identifying quasars from wide-field broadband imaging survey data. Among the quasars that have been discovered so far, however, there is a redshift gap at 5 ≲ z ≲ 5.7 due to the limitations of filter sets in previous studies. In this work, we present a new selection technique of high redshift quasars using a sequence of medium-band filters: nine filters with central wavelengths from 625 to 1025 nm and bandwidths of 50 nm. Photometry with these medium-bands traces the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a source, similar to spectroscopy with resolution R ~ 15. By conducting medium-band observations of high redshift quasars at 4.7 ≤ z ≤ 6.0 and brown dwarfs (the main contaminants in high redshift quasar selection) using the SED camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (SQUEAN) on the 2.1-m telescope at the McDonald Observatory, we show that these medium-band filters are superior to multi-color broad-band color section in separating high redshift quasars from brown dwarfs. In addition, we show that redshifts of high redshift quasars can be determined to an accuracy of Δz/(1 + z) = 0.002 - 0.026. The selection technique can be extended to z ~ 7, suggesting that the medium-band observation can be powerful in identifying quasars even at the re-ionization epoch.
Nuclear Medicine Images have comparatively poor spatial resolution, making it difficult to relate the functional information which they contain to precise anatomical structures. Anatomical structures useful in the interpretation of SPECT /PET Images were radiolabelled. PET/SPECT Images Provide functional information, whereas MRI mainly demonstrate morphology and anatomical. Fusion or Image Registration improves the information obtained by correlating images from various modalities. Brain Scan were studied on one or more occations using MRI and SPECT. The data were aligned using a point pair methods and surface matching. SPECT and MR Images was tested using a three dimensional water fillable Hoffman Brain Phantom with small marker and PET and MR Image was tested using a patient data. Registration of SPECT and MR Images is feasible and allows more accurate anatomic assessment of sites of abnormal uptake in radiolabeled studies. Point based registration was accurate and easily implemented three dimensional registration of multimodality data set for fusion of clinical anatomic and functional imaging modalities. Accuracy of a surface matching algorithm and homologous feature pair matching for three dimensional image registration of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Images(MRD was tested using a three dimensional water fill able brain phantom and Patients data. Transformation parameter for translation and scaling were determined by homologous feature point pair to match each SPECT and PET scan with MR images.
The mapping of the spin-spin relaxation time T2 in pixel-by-pixel was suggested as a quantitative diagnostic tool in medicine. although the CPMG pulse sequence has been known to be the best pulse sequence for T2 measurement in physics NMR, the supplied pulse sequence by the manufacture of MRI system was able to obtain the maximum of 4 CPMG images. Eight or more images with different echo time TEs are required to construct a reliable T2 map, so that two or more acquisitions were required, which easily took more than 10 minutes. 4-echo CPMG imaging pulse sequence was modified to generate the maximum of 8 MR images with evenly spaced echo time TEs. In human MR imaging, since patients tend to move at least several pixels between the different acquisitions, 8-echo CPMG imaging sequence reduces the acquisition time and may remove any mis-regitration of each pixels signal for the fitting of T2. The resultant T2 maps using the theoretically simulated images and using the MR images of the human brain suggested that 8 echo CPMG sequence with short echo spacing such as 17-20 msec can give the reliable T2 map.

The purpose of this study was to analyze $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN dynamic PET image in rat myocardium to evaluate potential of this radiotracer as a perfusion imaging agent. Animal PET/CT scan was done in 9 rats during 120 minutes. Especially we synthesized $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN with kit which is simple and low cost method. PET images showed the in vivo dynamic distribution of $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN in the chest region of rats. Initially $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN PET images showed aorta and liver activities and a few minutes later, $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN moved to myocardium. Regions of interest were drawn on myocardium, liver, lung and blood pool. Time-activity curves showed significant uptake of $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN in myocardium. The contrast ratios of myocardial to blood pool, lung and liver at 60 minutes after injection were 1.66, 2.82 and 0.60. To estimate accurate kinetic parameters, 60 minutes after injection was required to PET scan as myocardium image contrast ratios reached to constant values. As a result, $^{68}Ga$-BAPEN would be suitable radiotracer for PET which can applied to diagnosis of myocardial perfusion diseases after further preclinical and clinical investigations.
The purpose of this study was to improve the technique so as to develop an advanced sensitive RF surface coil for investigating the sensitivities of the multi-spiral surface coils, and we eventually wanted to achieve high resolution of the microscopic MR images and MR spectra. The magnetic field inhomogeneity and shape of a surface coil were statistically estimated by simulation of the magnetic field distribution. On the basis of the experimental results with single, 3 and S-turned spiral RF surface coils, we found that the 3-turned coil had the highest sensitivity. The present study showed that the sensitivity of the RF surface coil was improved by increasing the number of spiral coil turns, and also the SNR of the RF surface coil was dependent upon the number of spiral coil turns. However, we found, rather strikingly, that the sensitivity of excessive turns of the coils was decreased due to the rise of the coil's Impedance. Thus, the present results demonstrated that the sensitivity was not proportional to the number of a spiral RF coil's turns, and the number of spiral coil turns should be optimized for obtaining the highest sensitivity and SNR.
