  • To apply object recognition techniques to real environment, illumination compensation method should be developed. As effective illumination compensation model, we focused our attention on Retinex model and illumination-Reflectance model, implemented them, and experimented on their performance. We implemented Retinex model with Single Scale Retinex, Multi-Scale Retinex, and Retinex Neural Network and Multi-Scale Retinex Neural Network, neural network model of Retinex model. Also, we implemented illumination-Reflectance model with reflectance image calculation by calculating an illumination image by low frequency filtering in frequency domain of Discrete Cosine Transform and Wavelet Transform, and Gaussian blurring. We compare their illumination compensation performance to facial images under nine illumination directions. We also compare their performance after post processing using Principal Component Analysis(PCA). As a result, illumination Reflectance model showed better performance and their overall performance was improved when illumination compensated images were post processed by PCA.

  • Color in an image is determined by illuminant and surface reflectance. So, to recover unique color of object, estimation of exact illuminant is needed. In this study, the illumination models suggested to get the object color constancy with the physical illumination model based on physical phenomena. Their characteristics and application limits are presented and the necessity of an extended illumination model is suggested to get more appropriate object colors recovered. The extended illumination model should contain an additional term for the ambient light in order to account for spatial variance of illumination in object images. Its necessity is verified through an experiment under simple lighting environment in this study. Finally, a reconstruction method for recovering input images under standard white light illumination is experimented and an useful method for computing object color reflectivity is suggested and experimented which can be induced from combination of the existing illumination models.

  • This study addresses the evaluation on the satisfaction of school illumination quality by applying SERVPERF model after extracting factors affecting school illumination quality. Three types of illumination systems (fluorescence light, general LED light and high color rendition LED light) were tested by students who have used each illumination system. Three factors such as effectiveness, esthetic sense and function were developed for evaluation. Satisfaction evaluation was performed based on applied SERVPERF model by comparing perceived levels. The differences of perceived levels of satisfaction on the illumination systems were analyzed by ANOVA. The results said respondents satisfy only the high color rendition LED light regardless of three factors. Especially, students who experienced high color rendition LED light have strong intention to recommend that illumination system to other schools. They also express their desire to use that system at home. Interestingly, there is not much satisfaction difference between fluorescence light and general LED light.

  • In this research, the overlapped illumination model was used for designing a freeform LED lens with a uniform illuminance distribution on its illuminating plane, and their performances and tolerances were compared. And, the illuminations on a illumination plane was measures for change with average illuminance and illuminance uniformity. As a result of the tolerance analysis about z-axis direction change, thickness change in lens and tilt change of light emission and characteristic change in LED source, overlapped model and divergent illumination model are similar to the performance about Z-axis direction change of light emission in LED source. but the uniformity illumination value in this overlapped model is more remarkably value than it in divergent illumination model about thickness change in LED lens. Also, even though the lens based on a divergent illumination model showed good performance compare to the lens based on an overlapped illumination model, the latter was less the deviation to variation of LED beam radiation ability.

  • In this paper, the illumination performances of three freeform lenses optimally designed for a point source were investigated for several LEDs with different source sizes, and also the tolerance characteristics of the lenses were analyzed. For comparison, two lenses with different sizes were designed with a divergent illumination model, and the last one was done with an overlapped illumination model. As the LED source size increased, the illuminance uniformity decreased more strongly, and the influence of a source misalignment on illumination performance became insignificant. However, the variation of LED radiation characteristics had strong effect on the illumination performance, irrespective of LED source size. Even though the lens based on a divergent illumination model showed superior performance compared to the lens based on an overlapped illumination model, the latter was less sensitive to the variation of LED radiation characteristics.

  • In Interior design, light is the most important factor in deciding color, texture and illumination level which are the basic factors of spatial design. To apply rendering technologies on prediction of illuminating effect, it is important to understand and analyse the basic properties of the illumination models that are local illumination model and global illumination model. The illumination models in computer graphics express the factors which determine the surface color, texture and light distribution through the reflection. The purpose of this study is to propose the best way of shading algorithm in interior space provided by the computer, based on the experimental analysis that 5 shading methods are applied to the interior space. The results of this study were as followed. 1) Local illumination models that are Lambert shading, Ground shading and Phong shading are not suitable to the prediction of interior illumination effect. 2) Ray tracing that is global illumination model could be adopted to interior illumination effects. Ray tracing is a very versatile algorithm because of the large range of lighting effects it can model. 3) Neither radiality nor ray tracing offers a complete solution for simulating all interior illumination effects. 4) Radiosity excels at rendering diffuse-to-diffuse inter-reflections and ray tracing excels at rendering specular reflections. By merging both shading techniques, that offers the best of both. Using computer technologies to simulate lighting in preliminary design stage which will provide information for designers and occupants to determine the effect of using artificial light sources at each stage of their design process. Further study in illumination analysis, prediction of illumination effect, and lighting calculation is required as computer media expands.

  • In this research, an overlapped illumination model was newly proposed for designing a freeform LED lens with a uniform illuminance distribution on its illuminating plane. Based on the proposed model and conventional illumination models, freeform lenses were designed and their performances and tolerances were compared. As a result of the tolerance analysis about thickness change in lens, position, size change, central direction change of light emission and characteristic change in LED source. This proposed model and divergent illumination model are similar to the performance about central direction change of light emission in LED source. but the uniformity illumination value in this proposed model is more remarkably value than it in divergent illumination model about characteristic change in LED source.

  • Reliable face recognition under various illumination environments is essential for successful commercialization. Feature-based face recognition relies on a good choice of feature vectors. Gabor feature vectors are known to be more robust to variations of pose and illumination than any other feature vectors so that they are popularly adopted for face recognition. However, they are not completely independent of illuminations. In this paper, we propose an illumination-robust face recognition method based on the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model. We first construct the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model where Gator feature vector space is rendered to be decomposed into two orthogonal illumination subspace and face identity subspace. Since the Gabor feature vectors obtained by projection into the face identity subspace are separated from illumination, the face recognition utilizing them becomes more robust to illumination. Through experiments, it is shown that the proposed face recognition based on Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model performs more reliably under various illumination and Pose environments.

  • The performance of face recognition is greatly affected by the illumination effect because intra-person variation under different lighting conditions can be much bigger than the inter-person variation. In this paper, we propose an illumination robust face recognition by separating identity factor and illumination factor using the symmetric bilinear models. The translation procedure in the bilinear model requires a repetitive computation of matrix inverse operation to reach the identity and illumination factors. Sometimes, this computation may result in a nonconvergent case when the observation has an noisy information. To alleviate this situation, we suggest a ridge regressive bilinear model that combines the ridge regression into the bilinear model. This combination provides some advantages: it makes the bilinear model more stable by shrinking the range of identity and illumination factors appropriately, and it improves the recognition performance by reducing the insignificant factors effectively. Experiment results show that the ridge regressive bilinear model outperforms significantly other existing methods such as the eigenface, quotient image, and the bilinear model in terms of the recognition rate under a variety of illuminations.

  • The spectral color resolution of an image is very important in color image analysis. Two factors influencing the spectral color resolution of an image are illumination intensity and lens aperture for a selected vision system. An optimal combination of illumination intensity and lens aperture for color image analysis was determined in the study. The method was based on a model of dynamic range defined as the absolute difference between digital values of selected foreground and background color in the image. The role of illumination intensity in machine vision was also described and a computer program for simulating the optimal combination of two factors was implemented for verifying the related algorithm. It was possible to estimate the non-saturating range of the illumination intensity (input voltage in the study) and the lens aperture by using a model of dynamic range. The method provided an optimal combination of the illumination intensity and the lens aperture, maximizing the color resolution between colors of interest in color analysis, and the estimated color resolution at the combination for a given vision system configuration.
