Loss of mandibular continuity due to neoplasm, trauma, or infection results in major esthetic and biologic compromise. The use of costochondral grafts for reconstruction of temporomandibular joint, described first by Gillies in 1920, has been accepted as a suitable method for replacing the mandibular condyle, especially in growing children. Autogenous iliac bone graft has been a satisfactory source of mandibular reconstruction since Sykoffs report in 1900. Autogenous bone grafts from the posterior aspects of the ilium provide large amount of PMCB with acceptable donor site morbidity. In timing of reconstruction, initial disease, age, medical history, growth and development, esthetic and psychologic factors should be considered. We present a case of osteosarcoma in the mandible that was treated by a hemimandibulectomy and the defect was reconstructed 20 months later with composite method of costochondral and posterior iliac bone graft.
The purpose of this study was to determine the adverse effects of methylmercuric chloride(MMC) against the fetal growth and the ossification rate of fetal pectoral and pelvic girdle, stermebrae, ribs and tail in pregnant Fischer 344 rats administered orally on day 7 of gestation. The resulted obtained are as follows. The weight and size of fetus were highly reduced by MMC. The reduction of fetal weight and size were 16. 2%~24.5%(p<0.01), and 34.1%~48.8%(p<0.01), and that of the litter’s weight were 67.0%(p<0.01) and 89.2%(p<0.01) by 20 and 30mg/kg MMC, respectively. Ossification centers were never formed in pectoral and pelvic phalanges and sternebrae, and was reduced as much as 70% in tail by 30mg/kg MMC. And also those were 82.4%~ 91.2%(p<0.01) in ischium, and 52.4~66.7%(p<0.01) in the others(ilium, fenur, tibia, fibula, metatarsals)of pelvic girdle by 30 mg/kg MMC. Ossification of sternebrae was terrible. 5th bone of sternebrae was not ossificated by 20 and 30 mg/kg MMC(p<0.01), and 2nd was also not ossificated by 30 mg/kg MMC(p<0.01).And reduction of ossification rate was 84.8~97.8%(p<0.01) in the others of sternebrae by 30 mg/kg MMC. And then, the reduction of ossification rate was 26.65~49.8%(p<0.01) in fetal ribs by 30 mg/kg MMC, and they were trend to increased as following from center to each edge. In conclusion, it was observed that fetal weight, size, and ossification of each bone were highly significantly reduced by the increased dosage of MMC.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of the morphological diagram by Sasang Constitutions and compare with Huh's morphological diagram, a theory based on the Four Cho Theory(四焦設) by Lee Je-Ma. We classified the Sasang Constitutions of 104 Korean College Students(average age 23.81) using QSCC II. Before measuring of morphologic diagrams, we exert the subjects to take supine position on the bed, and make it a rule that our staffs mesure each people directly. The 50% of the total subjects was Soeumin, 26.9% was Soyangin and 23.1% was Taeumin, our study shows the higher percentage than the other studies in Soeumin. The results as follows ; In the cases of man, Taeumin have more developed Low-Middle Cho(the interval between stomach line and Navel line) than other constitutions, whereas Soeumin has more developed Low cho(the interval between Navel line and Ilium line). In the cases of woman, there is no significant difference of Huh's morphology diagram among three Sasang constitutions. We analyzed the difference of obesity among sasang constitutions, and we found that the BMI(Body Mass Index$(Kg/m^2)$) of Taeumin was significantly higher than other constitutions in male. But there was no significant difference among Sasang constitutions in female. We have not found the exact accordance between the real measurement and Huh's Theory. But for man, there are several statistically significant results, indicating the usefulness of the Huh's Morphological Diagramming theory on the discriminating ability of Sasang Constitutions Classificaton. So this results suggest that the use of the Huh's theory should be improved in the classification of the Sasang Constitutions, considering the difference of morphology by sex.

Pelvic canal narrowing secondary to pelvic fractures can lead to episodes of recurrent constipation in cats. Triple pelvic osteotomy is considered as a surgical treatment method; however, there is potential for future recurrence of pelvic canal narrowing. This report describes a surgical method using a pelvic symphyseal autograft to keep the distraction of the ischial osteotomy gap to prevent the recurrence of pelvic canal narrowing. A triple pelvic osteotomy was planned to expand the narrow pelvic canal. The cranial ramus of the pubis was cut, and ischiatic and iliac osteotomies were performed. After expanding the ilium, the malunion pelvic symphysis was cut approximately 1 cm and then autografted to the gap of the ischiatic osteotomy line to keep the distraction. The patient showed clinical improvement postoperatively without recurrent pelvic canal narrowing related to triple pelvic osteotomy. However, constipation recurred on post-operative month-5. It was managed conservatively, and subtotal colectomy was performed eventually nine months post-operatively. There were no complications for five months of follow-up.

The trade-off between morphology and physical function may vary according to ecological traits. Taking a quantitative approach, we attempted to analyze the differences in the skeletal shape of the lower body and limbs in relation to the ecological traits of four anuran species (Dryophytes japonicus, Glandirana rugosa, Pelophylax nigromaculatus, and Lithobates catesbeianus) occurring in South Korea. Body size, locomotor mode, microhabitat, trophic positions, and predator defense mechanisms were selected for the ecological traits of the anurans. The pelvis, ilium, and urostyle, which are associated with locomotor performance, were selected for the skeletal shape of the lower body. The ratio of limbs, which is related to locomotor mode and microhabitat, was confirmed by analyzing the skeletons of the forelimbs (radio-ulnar and humerus) and hindlimbs (femur and tibiofibular). Both landmark-based geometric morphometrics and traditional methods were used for skeletal shape comparison. The skeletal shape of the lower body was completely different among the four species, whereas the ratio of the limbs was only different in D. japonicus. The skeletal shape of the lower body may be related to body mass and predator defense mechanisms, whereas the ratio of the limbs was related to the locomotor mode and microhabitat. Quantifying these morphological differences among various species can help elucidate the mechanisms of behavioral and morphological changes in response to ecological effects.

A one-month-old Thoroughbred colt presented with left hindlimb lameness grade 5/5, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners' lameness scale. The colt started showing signs of lameness two weeks earlier without being involved in an accident. A local veterinarian examined the foal; radiography revealed no significant findings under the hip joint. No improvement was noted after 15 days of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) medication. On presentation at our hospital, ultrasonography was performed, which revealed no significant findings in the iliac wings. The foal underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan under general anesthesia. CT revealed bone cysts in the following that could have caused the lameness: the left transverse process of the 5th, 6th lumbar, and the 1st sacrum vertebrae; osteophytes in the auricular surface of the ilium, suggestive of sacroiliac arthritis. The foal recovered smoothly from anesthesia with assistance. The foal was treated with NSAIDs and rested for more than six months. The owner reported that the foal showed no lameness one year later. CT revealed bony changes in the lumbosacral region that were not detected by radiography and ultrasonography, suggesting that CT could be useful for detecting abnormalities in the pelvic region of horses.

Purpose: To clarify the results of simple bone cyst (SBC) treatment in children by percutaneous autologous bone marrow grafting and xenografting. Materials and Methods: We studied seven cases (4 males, 3 females) of SBC, which were treated by percutaneous autologous marrow and heterograft bone grafting from January 1996 to February 1999. Their mean age at surgery was 10 years (6 to 15), and the mean follow-up period was 35.6 months (20 to 52). Three cases were located in the proximal and middle humerus; three cases were in the proximal femur; and one case occurred in the ilium. Mean volume was 14.7 $cm^2$ (10 to 23). Six cases were active, and one was inactive. Five patients had a history of receiving a mean of 3.2 steroid injections. The mean quantity of bone marrow used in treatment was 14.3 ml (10 to 20), and the mean amount of $Lubboc^{(R)}$ heterograft bone (Transphyto S.A. Clermont Ferrand, France) used was 6.4 blocks (5 to 10). Results were analyzed using the modified Neer classification. Results: Five cases completely healed with obliteration of the cyst cavity (Grade IV). Two cases demonstrated sclerosis around a partially visible cyst (Grade III). All treatment results were satisfactory and without intraoperative or postoperative complications. Conclusione: Percutaneous autologous marrow and heterograft bone grafting is recommended as an effective treatment method for simple bone cyst. It offers ease of operative technique, a high rate of healing, a low recurrence rate, low morbidity, a low incidence of postoperative complications, and free from bone graft donor site problems.

Introduction: The iliac crest has been the accepted place to obtain bone for reconstruction in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The iliac crest has many advantages because of its accessibility, large amount of cancellous bone, relative ease of bone harvest, possibility of two team approach and ability to close the wound primarily. This study evaluated retrospectively the morbidity of bone harvesting from the anterior iliac crest to provide a logical guide for recognizing the complications and morbidities of an iliac crest bone graft. Materials and Methods: Fifty healthy patients (mean age of 35.5 years; range 7 to 59) underwent iliac crest bone harvesting for a maxillofacial reconstruction from January 2007 to September 2009 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Kyungpook National University Hospital. Age, sex, size and kind of grafted bone, duration of pain on donor site, duration of gait disturbance, sensory deficit, scar, contour defect were measured in each patients by retrospective research. Results: The mean duration of pain is 6.7 days, and mean duration of gait disturbance is 7.2 days. Most patients were free from gait disturbances and pain within 2 weeks and there was no correlation between the size of the harvesting block bone and the duration of gait disturbance or pain. However, this study showed that the duration of pain is associated with gait disturbance. In addition, most patients had no complaints regarding their surgical scar and contour defect, and only one patient had permanent impairment of the sensory function. Moreover, an iliac bone graft did not extend the length of hospitalization. Conclusion: This study suggests that split thickness bone harvesting from the inner table of the anterior iliac crest is a well accepted procedure with relatively low morbidity.

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of platelet rich plasma in bone formation and osseointegration of implant installed in the bone marrow space. Materials and Methods: Five beagle dogs were used as experimental animals. Two implants were installed on each tibia in the dogs. Implants of the control group were installed with no additional graft. Those of the experimental group 1 were installed with autogenous bone graft from the ilium autogenous bone. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) alone was used in experimental group 2 and the mixture of PRP and autogenous bone was used in experimental group 3. The animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after implantation. The parts of tibia containing implant were harvested and radiographs were taken for radiographic examination. The specimens were prepared for histological examination and histomorphometric analysis of implant-bone contact ratios. Results: 1. All implants showed sufficient osseointegration in the cortical bone radiographically and histologically, but osseointergration in the marrow space was not satisfactory. 2. Histomorphometrically, the implant-bone contact ratios in the bone marrow was sequentially high in the experimental group 3 (autogenous bone + PRP group), group 1 (autogenous bone group), group 2 (PRP group), and control group (non-additive). 3. It was verified that there was statistical significance between two experimental groups (group 1 and 3) and the other groups (group 2 and control group). (P<0.005) 4. However, there was no statistical significance between group 3 and group 1, also group 2 and control group respectively. Conclusion: These results suggest that platelet rich plasma is effective to osseointegration in the implant installation but there is no statistical significance.
A study was carried out to determine the effect of de-hulling on apparent and true ileal amino acids digestibility of soybean meals for growing pigs. Twenty barrows (Duroc${\times}$Large white${\times}$Longer white) were fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ilium. Digestibility of 20 experimental diets was determined, nine of them were de-hulled soybean meal diets, and nine of them were regular soybean meal diets and two low protein casein diets for determination of endogenous amino acid correction for true digestibility determination. A TEX>$5<{\times}5<$ Latin Squares Design was adopted in this trail. The results showed that de-hulling increased apparent ileal digestibility of isoleucine, threonine, aspartic, tyrosine and indispensable and dispensable amino acid (p<0.05) in soybean meals. Furthermore, dehulling is also increased apparent digestibility of arginine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, alanine, glutamic acid, serine and gross amino acids (p<0.01). However, there were no significant differences found for histidine, methionine, tryptophan, cystine and glycine (p>0.05). Similar responses were found for true ileal digestibility. In three dehulled and non-dehulled pairs soybean meals from the same respective sources, de-hulling increased apparent digestibility of lysine, methionine, threonine and cystine 1.42%, 2.06%, 2.18% and 1.40% respectively. True digestibility of lysine, methionine, threonine and cystine was increased 1.65%, 1.94%, 2.30% and 1.82% respectively. A prediction equation for true ileal amino acid digestibility (including lysine and arginine) was established by multivariate linear regression. The independent variables included relevant amino acid, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract and nitrogen free extract. The coefficient R2 values of lysine and agrinine were 0.596 and 0.531 respectively. According to the crude protein content, a prediction equation for lysine and arginine content in soybean meal was also established by single linear regression. The coefficient $R^2$ values of lysine and agrinine were 0.636 and 0.636 respectively.
