  • This study aimed to find out the formation of ecologically educational place identity of nature trails in national parks, which elementary school students to adults can understand, by analyzing the connectivity between characteristics (signs) of nature trails and elementary science environment-related key concepts and the domain of ecological education in the course of environment and by developing a semiotic interpretation model of place identity based on Barthes's semiotic theory. When analyzing correlations between the interpretation board-focused surrounding environment of nature trails and the content system of ecological education, this study found out that it showed the highest connectivity with the domain of 'System of Ecological Environment'. When analyzing the formation of place identity of nature trails in terms of semiotics, this study discovered that geographical locations or landscapes, artificial environments and physical elements as characteristics of surrounding environments mostly acted on the formation of placeness. Besides, it was found that both knowledge and attachment elements equally could act on the formation of a sense of place. Being likely to develop through interaction between placeness and a sense of place, place identity was mostly composed of behavioral internal stages and sympathetic internal stages. To diversify the formation of place identity, however, this study found it necessary to develop environment education projects and create surrounding environments and interpretation boards with the environmental uniqueness of nature trails reflected much more.

  • The traditional market has formed for itself through a long time thus has special value of the place. The tangible value of the traditional market is high, however, it became jeopardized to be dismantled since it can not cope with the consumption environment of modern society. Modern industrial society provides an inefficiently and standardized solution to the traditional market by ignoring the identity of place only by the value the traditional market in the law of large distribution industry. This study aims to define the placeness of Namdaemun traditional market by considering tangible value of place. The identity of the place was analyzed as a spatial configuration, space organization, and sense of place through the place's physical setting, activities, and meanings by Edward Ralph. Based on the analysis by Ralph, we analyzed the traditional market and compare to the department store, which is the representative of large scale distributor, using comparative method. We performed quantitative and integrative analysis for the placeness and provide a way to appraise the worth of the traditional market by deviating from the traditional evaluation method.

  • This study explored Korean college students' place attachment to current home environments and their place attachment to childhood home environments. The study sought to confirm the relationship between childhood place attachment and collegehood place attachment to home environment. Data were collected from 336 students at four universities in Jellabuk-Do, Korea, and questionnaire survey was performed. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was computed and showed five factors related to place attachment of home environment. Place intimacy, rootedness, place identity, place dependence, and place palyness showed in childhood place attachment to home; place identity, place affection, place restfulness, place dependence, and rootedness in collegehood place attachment to home. Canonical correlation analysis showed that childhood place attachment to home explained 43.9% variance with regard to collegehood place attachment to home. This relationship implied that childhood place attachment strongly affected subsequent collegehood place attachment.

This paper investigates the dimensions of place bonding for Worak-san National Park campers to enhance managers' ability to address deeper landscape meanings. Worak-san National Park campers (n=416) were surveyed during summer and fall of 2004 to collect the data. Confirmatory factor analysis of the data demonstrated that place bonding was composed of four dimensions such as place identity, familiarity, place dependence and place belongingness. The results of this study can provide valuation information for developing management actions to enhance park visitors' quality of recreational experiences.

  • A railway station appears in the form of multi-use station building where cultural and commercial elements such as shopping and leisure are mixed, getting out of simple space configuration oriented to the space for station work, where a passenger stays for a little while. Now, a railway station is a place expanded to the inside of city, and builds a relationship with urban fabric, and therefore it should receive the social change in the time together with the surrounding infrastructure, and should inevitably form the urban environment. And it should become the 'Place' so as to be capable of playing a role of buffer and a role of regional gateway landmark by making users included in the inside through various uses with regard to the dispersed urban connection. Hence, this study is intended to examine the planning through the place branding of railway station. In the method of research, the characteristics that place branding had was investigated, and an analysis was made on the basis of 10 place branding strategic elements and 6 railway design guidelines. And it was intended to set a direction in which the existing place branding strategy could be applied to the railway station, and was intended to derive the place branding planning strategic elements of railway station. Hence, the planning can be classified into the following 5 kinds in connection with railway station. First, identity should be embodied through the strategy of constructing the symbolic image of railway station. Second, a role of mediating variously approaching flows in the city should be played. Third, the spatial layout of railway station, which can increase the efficiency of use, should be arranged. Fourth, special characteristics should be intensified through creative storytelling that stimulates emotion. Fifth, an organic change is gradually necessary for sustainability. These planning elements should be applied in harmonious combination. Therefore, a new railway station can be maded by building identity and placeness and by giving the value through these planning directions in the future.

  • Based on the study of the lineage groups around Gyeongju City and the migrants from North Korea, it is recognized that any one of Korean group identities has not been naturally formed over a long time, but socially constructed. One of the project for the Korean human geography orienting toward Korean Studies is to examine, from the place perspective, the complicated and contested identities that modern Koreans are today sharing individually as well as in a group. From such an examination. it can explore specifically the future shape of the Korean identity upon which everybody can agree. To make the project successful, Korean Human Geography needs to start from the study of a specific place that would expose the triangular relations among the three elements: identity, place, ideology or power.
