Society's emphasis on a thin body ideal may intensify an individual's negative perceptions of fatness. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between sociocultural attitudes toward appearance (awareness and internalization of the female ideal) and anti-fat attitudes among middle-aged Korean women. In addition, the aim was to examine whether the body internalization of female ideals was a mediator in the proposed model. Participants included a sample of 264 middle-aged Korean women who completed a series of measures online. The following information was collected through online questionnaires: awareness and internalization of the female ideal, attitudes toward fat, body weight perception, and demographics. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis, descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The measurement model and the structural model testing provided an acceptable fit to the data, and all proposed pathways in the research model were statistically significant. Awareness of the female ideal was significantly and positively associated with internalization, and it significantly and positively predicted both constructs of anti-fat attitudes. Additionally, awareness of the female ideal was significantly and positively indirectly associated with attitudes toward fat people-dislike and willpower mediated by internalization. Overall, these findings suggest that society's emphasis on female appearance and a thin body can ultimately result in significant stigmatization of overweight/obese individuals. This study emphasizes the importance of establishing a healthy appearance standard to reduce anti-fat prejudice.
The purpose of this study is to develop Blue-Jean Design for Ideal Body Shape. The final aim of Fashion design is looks beauty of people by optical illusion. This study is based on Gestalt therapy and, is blue jeans design using optical illusion of vertical line for ideal beauty body image. Optical illusion for blue-jean design effect to achieve the ideal body shape. We can accumulate the preceding study for modern clothing from design and the related optical illusion effects. Vertical line stitches have all the advantages especially in pants design. I design blue jeans using optical illusion theory. The results of this study are as follows: First, Vertical line helps that jean has the long body shape effectively. Second, Jeans which have two or more vertical lines is more effective than simple Jean in order to make slim body shape. Third, Appropriate position of horizontal lines can be effective to make long body shape. Fourth, Top stitch, pin-tuck and pleats can be applied to vertical or horizontal lines instead of cutting lines.
This study analyzed the relationships among actual body types, perceived body types, body-image discrepancy(difference between perceived and ideal body), and body satisfaction, and their effects on jacket fit satisfaction at 17 body parts of women in their 20s. To apprehend the actual body type of subjects, total 18 items were measured according to the anthropometric method of the 6th anthropometric survey project. The relationship between body-image discrepancy and body satisfaction was correlated in all body parts. Body-image discrepancy and body satisfaction were more affected by perceived body size than actual body size. The fit satisfaction level of the jacket was found to be lower as the discrepancy between the body type and the ideal body type was recognized. As the waist girth, hip girth, armscye girth, and upper arm girth were smaller, the height was taller, bust girth and breast size were larger, these body sizes were considered as closer to the ideal body shape and the jacket fit of the area was more satisfied. When the perceived body sizes and the actual body sizes were compared, the women in their 20s tended to perceive their waist, abdomen, and hip as larger, their shoulder length and front/back interscye as longer, their breast size as smaller, and their waist height as lower than the actual size.
Lookism is spread largely because many people think beautiful people are treated better and receive more favors. This trend has been influenced by mass media and impacted by commercial marketing strategy. The expectation for the beauty have risen higher than ever. People expect beautiful body and beautiful face which are more difficult to meet the standard of beauty. People desire tall and skinny body. The purpuse of this study was to find out body image from college females in the age which they are very sensitive to appearance. This research focused to find out how they perceived their own body shape and their perception of the most ideal body shape. Measuring tool for the research was 9 pictures of body silhouette from very skinny to very fat. To analyse the respondents' objective body image, Body Mass Index were employed. The result of this research indicated that there were distinct differences between their subjective body images and ideal body images. This result indicated that they were not satisfied with their own body shape and hence they were not confident towards their body images. Even though their objective bodies were normal or under weight, they still felt they were over weight. This meant their body images were misrepresented. They preferred thinner bodies even though their bodies were perfectly normal and healthy. But these misrepresented body images could be unhealthy physically, psychologically, or socially. These results showed that college females were overly obsessive with superficial appearance rather than improving ones capability to be more competitive in the society. From this research, I tried to find out perception of body image and it's distortion which was debated a lot in our society. I also want to provide basic reference material for establishing the body image study.
This study focused on the development of scales measuring the characteristics related to appearance management behaviors of businessmen for on-line image consulting. The purposes of this study were, 1) to develop a tool which can measure the ideal image, 2) to develop a tool which can measure personality, and 3) to develop a scale measuring the physical characteristics and body cathexis. The data were collected from 380 businessmen in Seoul, Korea and were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, reliability test, cluster analysis, correlation analysis, one-wav ANOVA and Duncan test. The results from this study were as follows .1)Five factors of the ideal image were identified: stylish, able, active, neat/confident and easy. The total variance was 74.29$\%$ and Cronbach's alpha of the 5 factors ranged from .74-.90. One item was selected to represent each factor. 2) Five factors of personality were identified: preference of social function, sociable, dynamic, achievement-motivated, and success-oriented. The totai variance was 60.63$\%$ and Cronbach's alpha ranged from .56-.83. One item was selected to represent each factor. 3) Five factors of body cathexis were identified: satisfaction with girth, length, physique, nose and eyes. The total variance was 73_46$\%$ and Cronbach's alpha ranged from .68-.85.
The purpose of this study is to come up with a perspective that can enhance the understanding about the mechanism of fashion change. The starting idea of this study is that fashion has changed according to the ideal body image of the specific society or individual. The theoretical framework about the ideal body image has been studied by the literatures on the subject and it is verified by the analysis of John Galliano & Martin Margiela's fashion works. The results are as follows. First, Galliano exposes the woman's body as a sexual symbol which is articulated by men's eyes. Margiela describes the woman's body as human being which doesn't highlight any sexual characteristics. Second, Galliano emphasizes the body conscious silhouette whereas Margiela perceives the body as a whole, rather than looks into each body part. Third, Galliano uses lots of decoration to make display luxurious. Margiela restrains himself from using decorations and tries to create images by interaction between the clothes and bodies. Forth, Galliano expresses the eroticism by accentuating eyes and lips with strong color cosmetics. Margiela's fashion is not dazzling with makeup. He even covers the face with fabrics. Aesthetics in all societies is articulated by their hidden social power groups, and then it has influence on taking shape of the ideal body image and the mainstream of fashion. But the innate characters of individuals offer challenges to the fashion majority. The tension between the social power and individual character makes and changes the fashion.
Purpose: The increase of cosmetic surgery procedures is partly motivated by more positive attitude toward cosmetic surgery as a means of improving physical appearance. In this study factors expected to predict need for cosmetic surgery were examined. Methods: A descriptive design was used with 321 high school girls who completed a questionnaire about sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, body image, self-esteem, and need for cosmetic surgery. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to examine factors affecting need for cosmetic surgery. Results: Bivariate correlations showed that need for cosmetic surgery was positively correlated with internalization and awareness of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, and appearance orientation in body image and negatively correlated with self-esteem and ideal body mass index (BMI). Multiple regression showed that the predictive variables explained 22.1% in need for cosmetic surgery. The significant factors influencing need for cosmetic surgery were greater internalization and awareness of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, better appearance evaluation and higher appearance orientation in body image, lower self-esteem, and lower ideal BMI. Conclusion: Overall, results of this research suggest that prevention of media influence and body image disturbances, and promotion of self-esteem are very important to young women.
Purpose: To investigate self-esteem according to differences between real and ideal Body Mass Index (BMI) in female college students. Methods: Subjects were 587 female students in Korea. Data was collected by using a developed questionnaire through pretesting. Results: Actual number (46.7%) and actual number (5.1%) of participants were defined as being underweight and overweight, respectively. Nearly all participants expression high dissatisfaction with their body shape. Averages of 1.02, 2.97, 7.81 were revealed for underweight, normal weight and overweight group differences between real and ideal BMI. Those who were defined as overweight exhibited significantly self-esteem than those who were defined as underweight. Conclusions: The belief that body shape is heavier than actually the case may be prevalent among female college students in Korea. This difference between the real and ideal BMI negatively influences self-esteem. Programs aimed at improving body image awareness an self-esteem among female college students are needed.
This study was designed to investigate body image, objective and subjective measurements of body size and shape, eating behavior, and weight control practices in 650 Korean adolescent girls; 500 of the subjects were 14 years old and enrolled in middle schools, while the remaining 150 were 17 years old and enrolled in high schools. Subjects responded anonymously to a self-administered questionnaire. The results showed that average height and weight of the subjects were 157cm and 49.5kg, respectively, while subjects ideal heights and weights averaged 164cm and 48kg, respectively. The ideal adult body heights and weights proposed by the subjects averaged 172cm and 55kg respectively. Over 50% of the subjects were dissatisfied with their body image; the degree of dissatisfaction with body image was higher in those who believed themselves to be fat. Most of the subjects wanted to lose weight and had tried to lose weight. Self-reported weight control practice methods included reducing food intake (31.9%), skipping meals (29.6%), exercise (25.8%), using slimming machines (6.9%), and using diet pills (5.1%). The heavier the subjects weight was, the greater the difference between the subjective and objective evaluations of body size. The body image scores of subjects who perceived themselves as fat were significantly lower than those of subjects who perceived themselves as normal or underweight. The difference between subjective and objective evaluations of body size, and the degree of obesity, were significantly higher in those subjects who had experience of weight control than those who had no experience of weight control. These results suggest that nutrition and health education programs for adolescent girls should be researched and implemented in order to establish a more realistic body image, positive habits in weight control, and healthful eating habits.
