Adaptive Hypermedia for eLearning: An Implementation Framework

  • eLearning can be defined as an approach to teaching and teaming that utilises Internet technologies to communicate and collaborate in an educational context. This includes technology that supplements traditional classroom training with web-based components and learning environments where the educational process is experienced online. The use of hypertext as an educational tool has a very rich history. The advent of the internet and one of its major application, the world wide web (WWW), has given a tremendous boost to the theory and practice of hypermedia systems for educational purposes. However, the web suffers from an inability to satisfy the heterogeneous needs of a large number of users. For example, web-based courses present the same static teaming material to students with widely differing knowledge of the subject. Adaptive hypermedia techniques can be used to improve the adaptability of eLearning. In this paper we report an approach to the design a unified implementation framework suitable for web-based eLearning that accommodates the three main dimensions of hypermedia adaptation: content, navigation, and presentation. The framework externalises the adaptation strategies using XML notation. The separation of the adaptation strategies from the source code of the eLearning software enables a system using the framework to quickly implement a variety of adaptation strategies. This work is a part of our more general ongoing work on the design of a framework for adaptive content delivery. parts of the framework discussed in this paper have been imulemented in a commercial eLearning engine.

  • Hypermedia systems have the browsing mechanism using links and provide navigation tools to retrieve and represent multimedia information. In this study we designed and implemented a hypermedia system which has the hierarchical group and local map for effective navigation. We also propose the clustering mechanism which constructs a cluster tree and uses this knowledge for navigation. The system has been designed to integrate the browsing and searching function of the hypermedia system for efficient multimedia information retrieval and user-interface. This system can be used to develop hypermedia application systems in the area of encyclopedia, reference document information, electronic dictionary and electronic book.

  • In this paper, I discuss the problems of developing web based adaptive hypermedia for education using extensible Markup Language(XML). Adaptive hypermedia systems are capable of altering the Presentation of the contents of the hypermedia on the basis of a dynamic understanding of the individual student. The student profile is contained in a student model, while the knowledge about the domain can be represented in the form of a concept based domain model. Accordingly, I define two different markup languages using XML. The one structures the domain model and the another describes the student model. These language can be easily extended and authored, with the result of obtaining a simple methodology for data structuring in the field of web based educational adaptive hypermedia.

  • HyTime(Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language), an international standard language to describe hypermedia electronic documents, is used to support the synchronization between various multimedia data for hypermedia applications. To manage the HyTime documents efficiently for shared environment, the logical structure information of them should be managed by database in a systematic way. In this Paper, we design a meta-database schema of HyTime DTDs(Document Type Definition) which define the logical structure of hypermedia documents and show how to manage the meta-database schema for storing the HyTime DTDs in the object-oriented database.

Web Hypermedia Resources Reuse and Integration for On-Demand M-Learning

  • The development of systems that can generate automatically instructional material is a challenging goal for the e-learning community. These systems pave the way towards large scale e-learning deployment as they produce instruction on-demand for users requesting to learn about any topic, anywhere and anytime. However, realizing such systems is possible with the availability of vast repositories of web information in different formats that can be searched, reused and integrated into information-rich environments for interactive learning. This paradigm of learning relieves instructors from the tedious authoring task, making them focusing more on the design and quality of instruction. This paper presents a mobile learning system (Mole) that supports the generation of instructional material in M-Learning (Mobile Learning) contexts, by reusing and integrating heterogeneous hypermedia web resources. Mole uses open hypermedia repositories to build a Learning Web and to generate learning objects including various hypermedia resources that are adapted to the user context. Learning is delivered through a nice graphical user interface allowing the user to navigate conveniently while building their own learning path. A test case scenario illustrating Mole is presented along with a system evaluation which shows that in 90% of the cases Mole was able to generate learning objects that are related to the user query.

  • Recently many organizations have attempted to build hypermedia systems to expand their working areas to internet-based virtual work places. It is thus important to manage corporate hypermedia documents effectively. Metadata play a critical role for managing these documents. This paper identifies metadata roles and components to build its schema. Furthermore a meta-information system HyDoMiS(Hyperdocument Meta-information System) is proposed by the use of this metadata schema. HyDoMiS performs three functions; metadata management search and reporting The metadata management function is concerned with workflow document and database. The system is more likely to help implement and maintsain hypermedia information system effectively.

A Hypermedia Video-Case: A New Tool for Teachers' Professional Development

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce the development of a new Lesson Video-Case Lab (LVCL) program in Suzhou, China. This program involves the creation of several series of hypermedia video-cases on teaching and learning designed to facilitate mathematics teachers' professional development. Each of these video-cases consists of lesson clips, case questions, interviews with experts, comments by peers, responses by students and other related resources. The study has implications pertaining to the use of technology in teacher development, the production of hypermedia video-cases, as well as research on case-based pedagogy and pedagogy in general.

  • To reduce an authors burden in hypermedia system that allows non-sequential information the process of creating links must be easy. However, most of the conventional hypermedia systems possess two difficulties. First, the author must go through several troublesome process to create a single link. Secondly, it is not easy to create an anchor in text or other multimedia data. Therefore, in order to support effective construction of hypermedia system the editing environment must provide an easy method to create links. In this paper, to resolve the weaknesses of conventional hypermedia system as mentioned above, an editing tool is developed and implemented to easily create the links of multimedia data. There are three methods in creating links and a user can select a convenient method in given circumstances. And for teh efficient production of nodes composed of multimedia information, we provide an authoring environment to integrate and process those informations.

  • Recently, many enterprises have attempted to capitalize knowledge assets on data warehouse (DW). It has been recognized as strategic core process to create corporate competitive advantage and implement enterprise e-biz strategies. However, most approaches to represent knowledge and decision process have limits in considering various knowledge types, their relationships and continuity in knowledge formulation. In addition, they are so inclined to one side such as concept-oriented frameworks or technology-oriented ones. They lack universal and wide-ranging features. This paper presents a comprehensive methodology to accumulate knowledge capital on DW via a properly grained hypermedia model. The methodology consists of three phases: knowledge requirement elicitation, hypermedia modeling, and system implementation. A real-life case for medical DW development is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology. This methodology is effective when an organization accumulates knowledge assets to put the corporate e-biz or cre-biz strategy into practice.
