  • A test unit for Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power generation system was developed and experimentally reviewed the performance of the ORC system. Two different organic fluids (R-245fa & Novec 649) were tested as working fluids for the system. System behavior was measured and analyzed along with the variables, such as temperature, pressure, rpm and shaft power. It is one of the findings that Novec 649 fluid is to be less pressurized than R-245fa in order to up to the heat source (boiler) capacity, that limits the experiment as high as 2 kW in shaft power.

  • The energy pile, used for both structural foundations and heat exchangers, brings about heat exchange with the ground formation by circulating a working fluid for heating and cooling buildings. As heat exchange occurs in the energy pile, thermal stress and strain is generated in the pile body and surrounding ground formation. In order to investigate the thermo-mechanical behavior of an energy pile, a comprehensive experimental program was conducted, monitoring the thermal stress of a cast-in place energy pile equipped with five pairs of U-type heat exchanger pipes. The heating and cooling simulation both continued for 30 days. The thermal strain in the longitudinal direction of the energy pile was monitored for a 15 operation days and another 15 days monitoring followed, without the application of heat exchange. In addition, a finite element model was developed to simulate the thermo-mechanical behavior of the energy pile. A non-linear contact model was adopted to interpret the interaction at the pile-soil interface, and thermal-induced structure mechanics was considered to handle the thermo-mechanical coupled multi-field problem.

  • Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) ceramics have been considered for various components of nuclear power plants such as the mechanical seal of a reactor coolant pump (RCP), the guide roller for a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM), and a seal support, etc. Corrosion behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature and high-pressure water must be elucidated before they can be considered as components for nuclear power plants. In this study, the corrosion behaviors of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics containing MgO and $Al_2O_3$ as sintering aids were investigated at a hydrothermal condition ($300^{\circ}C$, 9.0 MPa) in pure water and 35 ppm LiOH solution. The corrosion reactions were controlled by a diffusion of the reactive species and/or products through the corroded layer. The grain-boundary phase was preferentially corroded in pure water whereas the $Si_3N_4$ grain seemed to be corroded at a similar rate to the grain-boundary phase in LiOH solution. Flexural strengths of the $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were significantly degraded due to the corrosion reaction. Results of this study imply that a variation of the sintering aids and/or a control (e.g., crystallization) of the grain-boundary phase are necessary to increase the corrosion resistance of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature water.

  • Hydrothermal deposition of hydroxyapatite coatings on two types of $ZrO_2$ substrates (3 mol% $Y_2O_3$-doped and 13 mol% $CeO_2$-doped tetragonal $ZrO_2s$) was studied using aqueous solutions of $Ca(NO_3)_2\;4H_2O$ and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ containing EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) disodium salt as a chelating agent for $Ca^{2+}$ ions. For the precipitation of the coatings, the $EDTA-Ca^{2+}$ chelates were decomposed by oxidation with $H_2O_2$ at $90^{\circ}C$. The deposition behavior, morphology, and orientation of the coatings were investigated while varying the solution pH using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. For the two sub-strates, sparse deposition of the coating was obtained at pH 5.5, whereas a uniform deposition was obtained at pH 7.1, 9.8, and 11.4 with a denser microstructure for the higher pH. The coating consisted of thin needle-like or plate-like crystals ($1-2{\mu}m$ length or diameter) at pH 7.1, but fine rod-like crystals ($1-2{\mu}m$ length, $0.1{\mu}m$ diameter) at pH 9.8 and 11.4. The coatings were $1-3{\mu}m$ thick and showed a preferred orientation of the hydroxyapatite crystals with their c axis (i.e., the elongated direction) perpendicular to the substrate surface especially for pH 9.8 and 11.4.

  • To build a highly active photocatalytic system with high efficiency and low cast of TiO2, we report a facile hydrothermal technique to synthesize Ag2Se-nanoparticle-modified TiO2 composites. The physical characteristics of these samples are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy and BET analysis. The XRD and TEM results show us that TiO2 is coupled with small sized Ag2Se nanoplate, which has an average grain size of about 30 nm in diameter. The agglomeration of Ag2Se nanoparticles is improved by the hydrothermal process, with dispersion improvement of the Ag2Se@TiO2 nanocomposite. Texbrite BA-L is selected as a simulated dye to study the photodegradation behavior of as-prepared samples under visible light radiation. A significant enhancement of about two times the photodegradation rate is observed for the Ag2Se@TiO2 nanocomposite compared with the control sample P25 and as-prepared TiO2. Long-term stability of Ag2Se@TiO2 is observed via ten iterations of recycling experiments under visible light irradiation.

  • 𝛼-MnO2 as a cathode material for Zn-ion batteries allows insertion and extraction of Zn ions within its tunnel structure during charge and discharge. The morphology and crystal structure of 𝛼-MnO2 particles critically determine their electrochemical behavior and energy storage performance. In this study, 𝛼-MnO2 was synthesized from precursor solutions under varying pH conditions using a hydrothermal method. The effects of pH values on the morphology, crystal structure, and electrochemical performance were systematically analyzed. The analysis revealed that materials synthesized at higher pH levels exhibited elongated and narrow nanorods with a lower specific surface area. In contrast, those formed at lower pH levels showed shorter, thicker nanorods with a higher specific surface area. This increased surface area at a lower pH enhanced the specific capacitance by providing a greater electrode/electrolyte interfacial area. By contrast, the material synthesized at higher pH conditions demonstrated superior rate capability, attributed to its crystal structure with wider lattice spacings. Wide lattice parameters in the material synthesized at higher pH conditions facilitated easier ion transport than at lower pH levels. Consequently, the study confirms that adjusting the pH of the precursor solution can optimize the electrochemical properties of 𝛼-MnO2 for Zn-ion batteries.

  • The ground source heat pump system is increasingly being considered as an alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems to reduce the emission of ground house gases. In this paper, A series of numerical analysis for energy piles has been performed focusing on heat transfer efficiency, performance and thermal stress. Results of numerical analyses for the W-shape type shows more efficient heat exchange transfer than the coil type. From results of the thermo-mechanical analysis, it is shown that the concentration of thermal stress occurs around the circulating pipe and the interfaces between different materials. The largest deformation caused by thermal stress is observed in the energy pile.

  • A ground air heat exchanger (GAHX), also called earth air heat exchanger is a useful technology to be integrated with other renewable energy technologies. In this study, ground-air heat exchanger system for the air source heat pump is introduced. The purpose of this study is to design the volumetric flow rate and the length of GAHX system. A GAHX length model equation has been developed and used for calculation. GAHX thermal efficiency are recommended as 75% and 85% in order to optimize pipe length. $2,750m^3/h$, $2,420m^3/h$ of volumetric flow rate on 88.3m, 111.7m length are suggested for providing 7.5kW thermal capacity. And the number of path is recommended more than two to minimize pressure drop. For future study, advanced model equation study with ground thermal behavior and a more efficient GAHX design will be considered.

  • The use of energy pile foundation has been increased for economic utilization of geothermal energy. This paper describes an experimental and numerical study on thermal response tests (TRTs) using W and 3U-shaped ground heat exchangers (GHEs) in precast-high strength concrete (PHC) energy piles. Ground thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance were measured and compared with those numerical analysis. W-shpaed GHE showed higher heat transfer behavior than 3U-shaped one because of different conditions such as pile size and volume of grout. That is, ground thermal conductivity using W-shaped GHE was higher than that of 3U shaped GHE, and borehole thermal resistance vice versa. The relative error of borehole resistance values between numerical and analytical solution was less than 5%.

  • We report on the fabrication and photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of a ZnO nanorod array structure as an efficient photoelectrode for hydrogen production from sunlight-driven water splitting. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were grown on an indium-tin-oxide-coated glass substrate via seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method with the use of a ZnO nanoparticle seed layer, which was formed by thermally oxidizing a sputtered Zn metal thin film. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized ZnO nanorods were examined using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, as well as Raman scattering. The PEC properties of the fabricated ZnO nanorod photoelectrode were evaluated by photocurrent conversion efficiency measurements under white light illumination. From the observed PEC current density versus voltage (J-V) behavior, the vertically aligned ZnO nanorod photoelectrode was found to exhibit a negligible dark current and high photocurrent density, e.g., $0.65mA/cm^2$ at 0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl in a 1 mM $Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte. In particular, a significant PEC performance was observed even at an applied bias of 0 V vs Ag/AgCl, which made the device self-powered.
