  • Quicklime(CaO) is generally obtained through the calcination of limestone, the main component of which is calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$). Quicklime generates high-temperature heat when reacting with water, forming slaked lime($Ca(OH)_2$). The industrial sectors for limestone are determined by the hydraulic activity of slaked lime, which is obtained by measuring temperature changes during the hydration reaction. Accordingly, this study examined the different crystallographic characteristics of limestone as affected by the geological origins of the regions where the limestones were produced, and how these characteristics affected hydraulic activity. Six limestone samples were collected from the Jecheon and Cheongsong areas and the hydraulic activities were measured in accordance with KS E 3077. The results indicate that limestone produced in the Cheongsong area, recrystallized through metamorphism caused by hydrothermal alteration, hada larger grain size of calcite than that of the Jecheon area, and displays a tendency of changing to marble. Limestone from the Cheonsong area showed more radical reaction in the early stage of hydration compared to that ofthe Jecheon area. In addition, it was revealed that limestone having more impurities like $SiO_2$ have lower hydraulic activity.

  • Up to now, microstructure changes of photocatalysts have been studied to improve photocatalytic activity. Especially, to improve the adsorption of reactants and reactive sites, porous and fine crystal structures have received much attention because of their large specific surface area. In this study, $TiO_2$ nanotubes were synthesized by hydrothermal method using $TiO_2$ nanoparticles; nanotubes were evaluated by oxidized methylene blue reduction test. Using synthesized $TiO_2$ nanotubes, results of TEM showed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were changed into folding sheets and nanotubes. XRD results showed that the peaks of the nanoparticles almost disappeared and only the rutile (110) and anatase (200) peaks were observed. Comparison of photocatalytic properties of nanoparticles and nanotube structures was performed by measuring the UV-vis absorbance with reducing oxidized methylene blue. As a result, the reduction rate of nanotubes was found to be $0.24{\mu}mol/s$, which was 2.6 times higher than the rate of reduction of nanoparticles.

  • In this paper, we present to evaluate physiological activity of Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf and its skin penetration using liposome and cell penetrating peptide. After extraction with Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf using the distilled water and supercritical, various physiological activities were examined. In antioxidants experiments, the total concentration of polyphenol compounds was determined to be 56.88 mg/g in hydrothermal extract, 45.07 mg/g in supercritical extract. The DPPH radical scavenging ability at 1,000 ㎍/mL was 33.97% in supercritical extract. The scavenging effect on SOD experiment at 500 ㎍/mL was 76.41% in supercritical extract. In the antimicrobial experiments, the hydrothermal extract had no effect, but supercritical extract represented maximum clear zone of 14.00 mm in Staphylococcus aureus strain. Liposome containing the RSE (Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf supercritical extract) reduced particle size and stabilized zeta potential. In the epidermal permeability experiment, it was confirmed that the permeation of liposome containing the RSE and cell penetrating peptides was remarkable.

  • The effect of precursor concentration on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of $TiO_2$nano-flowers was investigated in this study. An increase in crystallite size was observed with an increase in the concentration of the precursor (titanium butoxide). The FE-SEM micrographs of the as-prepared samples show a three-dimensional flower-like morphology. The flowers consist of several nanorods coming out of a single core and have very sharp edges. Also, the variation in the aspect ratio of the nanostructure was observed with the concentration of the precursor. The photocatalytic properties of the samples show that the sample that has a high aspect ratio (AR~9) has a much better photocatalytic activity compared to the nano-crystal with a low aspect ratio (AR~6.1). It is believed that the excellent photocatalytic performance and short time synthesis of $TiO_2$nano-flowers using the microwave hydrothermal method can have potential applications in the field of photocatalysis.

  • The direct synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with acidic and basic active sites is challenging due to the introduction of functional groups by post-functionalization method often jeopardize the framework integrity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of acid-base bifunctional MOFs with tuning acid-base strength. Employing modulated hydrothermal (MHT) approach, microporous MOFs named $UiO-66-NH_2$ was prepared. Through the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-propanesultone with amino group, $UiO-66-NH_2-SO_3H-type$ catalysts can be obtained. The synthesized catalysts were well characterized and their catalytic performances were evaluated in one-pot glucose to 5-HMF conversion. Results revealed the acid-base bi-functional catalyst possessed high activity and excellent stability. This work provides a general and economically viable approach for the large-scale synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs for their potential use in catalysis field.

  • F-containing $TiO_2$ nanopowders are synthesized using simple wet processes (precipitation-based and hydrothermal) from ammonium hexafluorotitanate (AHFT, $(NH_4)_2TiF_6$) as a precursor to apply as a photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The surface properties of the prepared samples are evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirm that the synthesized anatase $TiO_2$ has sphere-like shapes, with numerous small nanoparticles containing fluorine on the surface. The photocatalytic activity of F-containing $TiO_2$ compared with F-free $TiO_2$ is characterized by measuring the degradation of RhB using a xenon lamp. The photocatalytic degradation of F-containing $TiO_2$ exhibits improved photocatalytic activity, based on the positive effects of adsorbed F ions on the surface.

  • Haenam pyrophyllite deposit occurred in the rhyolitic tuff of late Cretaceous age is located in the northern part of Haenam-gun, Jeonranam-do. The ore of the Haenam deposit is predominantly composed of pyrophyllite and illite accompanying such clay minerals as kaolinite, chlorite, and smectite. Pyrophyllite ore at the center of altered mass is often associated with kaolin minerals and high temperature minerals such as corundum, andalusite, and diaspore. On the basis of mineral assemblage the Haenam deposit can be devided into three alteration zones from the center to the margin of the deposit; the pyrophyllite zone, kaolinite zone, and illite zone. All alteration zones are associated with appreciable amounts of chalcedonic quartz. Those mineral assemblages indicate that hydrothermal solution which produced the Haenam deposit is strongly acidic solution with high silica and hydrogen activity and low $SO_4{^{2-}}$ activity. Discriminant analysis shows that $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, and $Al_2O$, of major elements are discriminant elements which classify alteration zones, while in case of trace elements Cr, Ni, and Sr turned out to be discriminant elements in this deposit. According to the mineral assemblage and illite geothermometry, pyrophyllite ore is considered to have been formed at about $240-290^{\circ}C$. K-Ar isotopic age for illite from this deposit indicates that it was formed at much the same age of later stage volcanics in the area, suggesting that the hydrothermal alteration of these deposits is associated with later volcanism of the area.

  • We report three-dimensional polycrystalline anatase TiO2 structures (3D a-TiO2) for environmental and bio-medical applications. The 3D a-TiO2 was synthesized without thermal treatment by the growth of rod-like polycrystals on Degussa P25 (P25) via low temperature (< $85^{\circ}C$) modified alkali hydrothermal processing. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic results showed that the rod-like polycrystals of 3D a-TiO2 possessed the highly anatase nanostructures. The photocatalytic activity of 3D a-TiO2 was found to be 2.2 times higher than that of P25. The recyclability of the 3D a-TiO2 was found to be high: the decolorization rate was 94.8% of the initial value after fifteen cycles. In addition, 3D a-TiO2 exhibited excellent antibacterial activities for the sterilization of gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Even at the 10th recycled use, more than 98.4% of E. coli and S. aureus can be killed. These results indicated that 3D a-TiO2 might have utility in several promising applications such as photocatalytic water/air purification and bactericidal agents.

  • Antioxidative effects of rice hull extracts pre-treatment with various organic acids were evaluated. After incubating rice hull in 50 mM of five different organic acid solutions (acetic, citric, lactic, phosphoric, and tartaric acid) for 18 hours at room temperature, hydrothermal treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30 min was carried out. Antioxidant activity of the rice hull extract was evaluated by determining total phenol contents (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA), reducing power (RP), and ABTS RSA. Pre-treatment with 50 mM phosphoric acid significantly increased TPC, DPPH RSA, and RP, while it decreased ABTS RSA. The effect of phosphoric acid concentration was also determined. TPC and DPPH RSA of rice hull extract increased with concentration of pre-treated phosphoric acid; in contrast, RP showed the reverse pattern. The results indicated that pre-treatment of rice hull with organic acid was very effective for increasing phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of rice hull extract.

  • The hyperthermophilic archaebacterium Thermococcus profundus Isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent system, produced several amylolytic enzymes such as extracellular amylase and pullulanase, intracellular a-1,4-91ucosidase in respone to the presence of complex carbohydrates In the growth medium. This strain showed high activities on 0.5% maltose than on complex carbohydrates One of the amylases was partially purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl chromatography. The amylase exhibited maximal activity at pH 5.5 and 80$^{\circ}C$, and was stable in the range of pH 5.5 to 9.5 and up to 80$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The enzyme activity was no dependence on Ca2+ and not inhibited by detergents. The amylase hydrolyzed soluble starch, amylose, amylopectin and glycogen to produce maltose and maltotriose with trace amounts of glucose, but not pullulan and ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$-, ${\gamma}$-cyclodextrin. Malto-oligosaccharides ranging from maltotetraose to maltoheptaose were hydrolyzed in an endo fashion.
