As a results of this research, the Nakdong River consisted of 43% of hydrophobic fraction, 39% of hydrophilic fraction, and 18% of transphilic fraction. The hydrophobic fraction in this raw water was mostly fulvic acid. Fulvic acid comprised of 62% and the rest was humic acid(38%). There was more carboxylic acid functional roup(64%) than phenolic group(36%). HPI-N and HPI-C comprised of 17% and 22% in the hydrophilic portion, respectively. The results of the membrane fouling test using UF membrane according to NOM fractions. HPI-N caused more fouling than HPI-C. Humic acid caused more fouling than fulvic acid probably due to higher adsorption capacity. Since humic acid has higher adsorption capacity than fulvic acid, it would be more adsorbed onto the membrane pores. The carboxylic acid functional group caused more fouling than the phenolic group.
We prepared a simple, economic and versatile preparative system for an enantiomeric separation. Hydrophobic amino acid enantiomers were resolved in the preparative scale by a centrifugal liquid chromatography on the N-hexadecyl-L-proline coated reversed phase. The factors controlling the retention and resolution of racemic amino acids such as the concentration of Cu(Ⅱ), pH of the eluent, the type and content of organic modifier, and rpm of CLC were examined. Several mg of hydrophobic amino acid enantiomers were separated preparatively. To separate all of different amino acid enantiomers, various coating material will be investigated.

In order to improve the functional properties of several fish meat extracts as an alternate protein source, theri basic plastein reactions were evaluated. The UV absorption at 270 and 290 nm indicated that plasteins had higher amount of hydrophobic peptide or amino acid than the fish meat extracts. The water solubilities of the extracts were reduced at acidic pH. Values for the emulsifying capacity of the extracts and plasteins were over 30% although the latter showed the higher ones than the former. The osmolalities of the extracts at 1.0% concentration were 39(loach), 33(bastard halibut), 30(jacopever) and 24(crucan carp) milliosmole. Generally the slightly higher osmolalities were noted in the plasteins to be compared with the extracts. Both the extracts and plasteins exhibited a higher antioxidative effect than tocopherol. The hydrophobic amino acid which had been introduced at plastein reaction attributed the stronger antionxidative effect of its product than the extracts.
The effects of electrolytes on electrochemical behavior from an oil thin layer interposed between a graphite electrode and an aqueous solution phase were examined. A hydrophobic electroactive species, tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCQ), in a benzonitrile (EN) layer was employed to study ion transfer properties across the BN-water interface. Experimental results showed that hydrophobic cations as well as anions could be successfully used as ionic charge carriers. The addition of various salts into either the oil layers or the aqueous solutions offers deeper insight for the electrochemistry of the liquid thin layer system. When aqueous perchloric acid is interfaced with the BN films, the perchlorate ion of tetrahexylammonium perchlorate (THAP) substantially suppresses the dissociated proton concentration in the layer by the common ion effect while there is only a little change in the total acid concentration. Further approach by theoretical calculation makes it possible to quantitatively understand the effect of the electrolytes to the electrochemical responses of TCQ, which were previously reported (Anal. Chem. 73, 337 (2001)).
Methods to prepare novel second-order nonlinear optical (2O-NLO) materials composed of all-silica zeolite (silicalite-1) and a series of 2O-NLO molecules having high second order hyperpolarizability constants (${\beta}$ values) are reviewed. These methods include the development of novel methods to incorporate a series of hemicyanine (HC) molecules into the channels of silicaite-1 films in uniform orientations. The first method is to incorporate HC molecules tethered with long alkyl chains (octadecyl or longer) into the silicalite-1 channels with the long alkyl chain side first through the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the long alky chains and the silicalite-1 channels. The second method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with a medium length alkyl chain (nonyl) into the silicalite-1 channels with the medium length alkyl chain side first through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the medium length alky chain in the photoexcited state and the silicalite-1 channels. The third method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with propionic acid into the silicalite-1 channels with the propionic acid side last mediated by a tetrabultylammonium cation ion-paired to the propionate unit. A method to prepare a novel third-order nonlinear optical (3O-NLO) material composed of zeolite-Y and PbS or PbSe quantum dots is also reviewed. This Account thus describes a promising new direction to which the search for highly sensitive 2O-NLO and 3O-NLO materials has to be conducted and a new direction to which zeolite research and applications have to be expanded.

The effect of intermolecular aggregation induced by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions on shear and elongational flow properties of aqueous acrylic thickener solutions is discussed. Complex shear modulus is determined at frequencies up to $10^4$ rad/s employing oscillatory squeeze flow. Extensional flow behavior is characterized using Capillary Break-up Extensional Rheometry. Aqueous solutions of poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)/poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinylimidazole) (PVP-VI) mixtures exhibit unusual rheological properties described here for the first time. Zero-shear viscosity of the mixtures increases with decreasing pH and can exceed that of the pure polymers in solution by more than two orders of magnitude. This is attributed to the formation of complexes induced by electrostatic interactions in the pH range, where both polymers are oppositely charged. PAA/PVP-VI mixtures are compared to the commercial thickener Sterocoll FD (BASF SE), which is a statistical co-polymer including (meth) acrylic acid and ethylacrylate (EA) forming aggregates in solution due to "sticky" contacts among hydrophobic EA-sequences. PAA/PVP-VI complexes are less compact and more deformable than the hydrophobic Sterocoll FD aggregates. Solutions of PAA/PVP-VI exhibit a higher zero-shear viscosity even at lower molecular weight of the aggregates, but are strongly shear-thinning in contrast to the weakly shear-thinning solutions of Sterocoll FD. The higher ratio of characteristic relaxation times in shear and elongation determined for PAA/PVP-VI compared to Sterocoll FD solutions reflects, that the charge-induced complexes provide a much stronger resistance to extensional flow than the aggregates formed by hydrophobic interactions. This is most likely due to a break-up of the latter in extensional flow, while there is no evidence for a break-up of complexes for PAA/PVP-VI mixtures. These flexible aggregates are more suitable for the stabilization of thin filaments in extensional flows.

New hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles were synthesized from alumina powders which were hydrophilic nano-agglomerates with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm by surface modification. The synthesized hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles which were retreated with Oleic acid were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscopy. Then transformer oil containing surface-modified alumina naonparticles were synthesized. The synthesized hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles were well-dispersed in transformer oil. The coefficient of viscosity and dielectric strength of the Nano-transformer oil were investigated with viscometer and high voltage experiment device. In this study, the thermal conductivity of Nano-transformer oil was investigated to reduce the oil temperature of transformer by transient hot-wire method.
The mechanism of interaction of four coumarin derivatives (CDS) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied using spectrofluorometric technique. It was found that the coumarin ring common to all CDS makes major contribution to interaction. Binding affinities could be related to parachor values of CDS. Stem-Volmer plots indicated the presence of static component in the quenching mechanism. Results also showed that both tryptophan residues of protein are accessible to CDS. The high magnitude of rate constant of quenching indicated that the process of energy transfer occurs by intermolecular interaction forces and thus CDS binding site is in close proximity to tryptophan residues of BSA. Binding studies in the presence of the hydrophobic probe, 8-anilino-l-naphthalein-sulfonic acid showed that there is hydrophobic interaction between CDS and the probe and they do not share common sites in BSA. Thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures showed that the binding of CDS to BSA involve hydrophobic bonds predominantly. The effects of various metal ions on the binding of CDS with BSA were also investigated.
The conformational properties of hydrophobic core variant ubiquitin (Val26 to Ala mutation) in an acidic solution were studied. The intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence emission spectrum, far-UV and near-UV circular dichroic spectra, the fluorescence emission spectrum of 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid in the presence of V26A ubiquitin, and urea-induced unfolding measurements indicate this variant ubiquitin to be in the partially folded molten globule conformation in solution at pH 2. The folding kinetics from molten globule to the native state was nearly identical to those from the unfolded state to the native state. This observation suggests that the equilibrium molten globule state of hydrophobic core variant ubiquitin is an on-pathway folding intermediate.

This paper presents the design, fabrication sequence and measurement results of a highly sensitive capacitive-type humidity sensor using a polyimide film without hydrophobic elements. The structure of the humidity sensor is MIM (metalinsulator-metal). For a high sensitivity, a modified aromatic polyimides as a moisture absorbing layer has been synthesized instead of using general polyimides containing hydrophobic elements. The polyimide film was obtained by synthesizing and thermally polymerizing polyamic acid composed of m-pyromellitic dianhydride, phenelenediamine and dimethylacetamide. Characteristics of fabricated sensors which include sensitivity, hysteresis and stability have been measured. The measurement result shows the percent normalized capacitance change of 0.37/%RH over a range from 10 to 90%RH, hysteresis of 0.77% over the same %RH range and maximum drift of 0.25% at 50%RH. The result shows that the developed humidity sensor can be applied to evaluate a hermeticity of various sensors and actuator systems as well as micro packages.
