Monthly up-river discharge in the riverine zone analysis resulted in large interannual variations and differences in calcium ($Ca^{2+}$), bicarbonate ($HCO_3^-$), and cations in the lacustrine zone (Lz) of Daecheong Reservoir during the wet year (Wy, 1993) vs. dry year (Dy, 1994). Total up-river discharge in the Wy was four times that of the Dy, and the up-river discharge in July~August of the Wy was eight times greater than that of same period of Dy. Annual water retention time in the Lz showed large difference between the two years. Water residence time (WRT) was minimum when the up-river discharge peaked, whereas the WRT was maximum when the up-river discharge was at minimal condition. This peak discharge from the up-river on early July reduced residence time in the Lz on mid-July~late July. Monthly pattern, based on data of May~November, was similar between the two years, but, but mean retention time in the Wy was 50 days shorter than in the Dy. Such hydrology, up-river discharge, and WRT reduced $Ca^{2+}$, $HCO_3^-$, and cations in the Lz. At low up-river discharge in Wy during April~May, the cation content of Ca+Mg+Na+K averaged 1.17meq $L^{-1}$ (range=1.09-1.26meq $L^{-1}$), but as the up-river discharge increased suddenly, the values decreased. Seasonal fluctuations of $Ca^{2+}$ showed exactly same pattern with bicarbonate ion of $HCO_3^-$. The minimum $Ca^{2+}$ (0.03meq $L^{-1}$) was occurred in the early August of wet year and coincided with the minimum $HCO_3^-$. These results suggest that the magnitude of variation in $Ca^{2+}$, bicarbonate, and cations in the lacustrine zone is directly determined by the peak magnitude of up-river discharge. The magnitude of up-river discharge determined water retention time and the magnitude of ionic dilution in the lacustrine zone, resulting in functional changes of the ecosystem.
In this paper, the Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) was validated to estimate the pollutant loads from rural small watershed. The study watershed was the HP#6 subwatershed in Balhan reservoir watershed, located southwest from Suwon. The drainage area of HP#6 study watershed was 3.85$\textrm{km}^2$. Parameters of the HSPF model related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated from 1996 to 1997, and validated from 1999 to 2000 using observed hydrologic and water quality data. The average simulated runoff ratio for the calibration period was 0.579 and the measured runoff ratio was 0.583. The root mean square error (RMSE) for runoff during the calibration period was 2.1mm and correlation coefficient ($R^2$) was 0.92. Regarding the total nitrogen simulation, the RMSE was 0.086kg/ha/day and $R^2$ was 0.81 for the calibration period. In the case of total phosphorus, the RMSE was 0.012kg/ha/day and $R^2$ was 0.70 for the calibration period.
The research grasps water quality contamination source by investigating the data that are superordinate laws and the related plans implemented for establishing water quality improvement measures of upper stream for Chung-Ju Dam, present conditions of the hydraulic and hydrology, the present conditions and plans of environment basic facilities, and present conditions of main contamination source's occurrence load and discharge load, etc. The research used the QUAL2E simulation which is being widely applied to simulation of river water quality because the QUAL2E has high credibility among water quality simulations known throughout the country. On basis of this research, regulations and politic alternatives are required in order to water quality improvement upper stream for the Chung-ju dam, especially establishing processing facilities in the region where loading amount is concentrated should be considered with the additional research regarding cost-efficient facility of pollution source.

In recent, the impacts of urbanization on hydrology and water quality can be minimized with the use of Low Impact Development (LID) practices in urban areas. But, there are no ways to verify or to show the quantitative effectiveness with LID practices. This study designed and developed to perform experiments in natural or artificial representation of hydrological cycle, which is called rainfall-runoff simulator to be able to quantify factors in hydrological system. This simulator was applied to a pervious pavement block. The study conducted analysis of effectiveness for a pervious pavement block by comparing the results with a general pavement block. The result from the pervious pavement block showed remarkably reduction effect on surface runoff with increase of rainfall intensity and more duration time. Also, the simulator was possible to control no surface runoff by a rainfall intensity at 50 mm/hr for an hour. The research indicated possibility and effectiveness for LID practices. This might be widely available to apply to LID practices verification. Therefore, the study is possible to make use of practical standards on fundamental studies.

The simulation of natural streamflow at ungauged basins is one of the fundamental challenges in hydrology community. The key to runoff simulation in ungauged basins is generally involved with a reliable parameter estimation in a rainfall-runoff model. However, the parameter estimation of the rainfall-runoff model is a complex issue due to an insufficient hydrologic data. This study aims to regionalize the parameters of a continuous rainfall-runoff model in conjunction with a Bayesian statistical technique to consider uncertainty more precisely associated with the parameters. First, this study employed Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme for the estimation of the Sacramento rainfall-runoff model. The Sacramento model is calibrated against observed daily runoff data, and finally, the posterior density function of the parameters is derived. Second, we applied a multiple linear regression model to the set of the parameters with watershed characteristics, to obtain a functional relationship between pairs of variables. The proposed model was also validated with gauged watersheds in accordance with the efficiency criteria such as the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, index of agreement and the coefficient of correlation.
This study addressed the influence of forest harvesting on seasonal water table dynamics in small headwater riparian areas. Four treatments including potential Best Management Practices(BMPs) for ephemeral and intermittent streams were implemented(BMP1, BMP2, clearcut and reference). Water table measurements were obtained at bi-monthly intervals for 3 years including one year of pre- and two years of post-harvest observations. Overall, water table responses affected largely by rainfall amount. In addition, significant increases in water table levels following harvesting occurred throughout the two post-harvest years. Water table levels increased up to 28.2cm in the clearcut treatment during 2008 and up to 54.2cm in BMP2 during 2009. However, increase in water table elevation was not directly related to basal area removal despite considerable differences in basal area removed between BMP2 and clearcut treatments. Water table rises were apparent in that water table were more elevated during dry season(June through November) than during wet season(December through May). These seasonal fluctuations were presumably driven by changes in evapotranspiration caused by differences in leaf area of overstory canopy and understory following harvest.
Differences in characteristics of flora and environmental factors of geomorphology, hydrology, water quality and soil were investigated in the shoreline of total 35 reservoirs according to their usages of waterpower generation, agricultural water supply, residential and industrial water supply and flood control in Korea. The number of plant species, floral structure and characteristics of species traits in the shoreline of reservoirs were different according to their usage. From the results of stepwise regression analysis, the total number of vascular plant species was increased at the environment of the higher flood frequency at the median water level and the longer exposure duration of the shoreline. The results of principal coordinates analysis and cluster analysis showed that the shoreline flora was classified as the 3 types of 1) flood control and residential and industrial water supply, 2) agricultural water supply and 3) waterpower generation reservoirs. The water level fluctuation, flood frequency at the median water level, lake water quality index and exposure duration of the shoreline were selected as important environmental factors affected on the characteristics of shoreline flora. The species richness of total flora and hydrophytes, especially submerged macrophytes, were much higher in the reservoirs for the purpose of the waterpower generation in which mesotrophic water quality and stable water levels were maintained. Annual or biennial ruderals were established on the ephemeral drawdown zone of flood control, residential and industrial water supply reservoirs which have oligotrophic or mesotrophic water quality and wide range of water level fluctuation. The floating hydrophytes were differentially dominated in the littoral zones of the agricultural water supply reservoirs with a mesotrophic or eutrophic water quality and a medium water level fluctuation. In conclusion environmental factors related to water level fluctuation and water quality were different and then the floral characteristics of shoreline were distinguishable according to usage of Korean reservoirs.
Wetland plants are an important component for wetland design and construction because they determine functions of wetlands through interactions with the abiotic environment such as wetland soil and hydrology as well as with other wetland organisms. In this study, germination experiments with soils from a natural wetland that contain seeds of wetland plants were conducted in wetland mesocosms to investigate the applicability of natural wetland soils for introducing and establishing wetland plants into constructed wetlands. Seven species were germinated in the experiment, with two new species that were not found in the field survey of wetland plants in the West Nakdong River area, Korea. The number of plant individuals germinated in submerged conditions (15 individuals) was much greater than that in waterlogged conditions (2 individuals). In experiments in which soils from a natural wetland and a wetland construction site were mixed at different ratios, the largest number of plant individuals was observed in the condition with 100% natural wetland soil. The highest growth was observed at 50% natural wetland soil for Hydrilla verticillata and 100% for Ceratophyllum demersum. These results suggest that 1:1 mixture of soils from natural wetland wetlands and wetland construction sites would provide an appropriate condition for secure establishment of submerged plants in constructed wetlands.
In order to describe runoff characteristics of urban drainage area, outflow from subbasins divided by considering topography and flow path, is analyzed through stormwater system. In doing so, concentration time and time-area curve change significantly according to basin shape, and runoff characteristics are changed greatly by these attributes. Therefore, in this development study of FFC2Q model by MLTM, we aim to improve the accuracy in analyzing runoff by adding a module that considers basin shape, giving it an advantage over popular urban hydrology models, such as SWMM and ILLUDAS, that can not account for geometric shape of a basin due to their assumptions of unit subbasin as having a simple rectangular form. For subbasin shapes, symmetry types (rectangular, ellipse, lozenge), divergent types (triangle, trapezoid), and convergent types (inverted triangle, inverted trapezoid) have been analyzed in application of time-area curve for surface runoff analysis. As a result, we found that runoff characteristic can be quite different depending on basin shape. For example, when Gunja basin was represented by lozenge shape, the best results for peak flow discharge and overall shape of runoff hydrograph were achieved in comparison to observed data. Additionally, in case of considering subbasin shape, the number of division of drainage basin did not affect peak flow magnitude and gave stable results close to observed data. However, in case of representing the shape of subbasins by traditional rectangular approximation, the division number had sensitive effects on the analysis results.
SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool)-MODFLOW (Modular Groundwater Flow) is a coupled model that linking semi-distributed watershed hydrology with fully-distributed groundwater behavior. In this study, the groundwater simulation results of SWAT and SWAT-MODFLOW were compared for Bokhacheon watershed in Namhan river basin. The models were calibrated and validated with 9 years (2009~2017) daily streamflow (Q) data of Heungcheon (HC) water level gauge station and the daily groundwater level observation data of Yulheon (YH). For SWAT, the groundwater parameters of GW_DELAY, GWQMN, and ALPHA_BF affecting baseflow and recession phase were treated. The SWAT results showed the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.7 and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiencies (NESQ, NSEinQ) for Q and 1/Q with 0.73 and -0.1 respectively. For SWAT-MODFLOW, the spatio-temporal aquifer hydraulic conductivity (K, m/day), specific storage (Ss, 1/m), and specific yield (Sy) were applied. The SWAT-MODFLOW showed R2, NSEQ, and NSEinQ of 0.69, 0.74, and 0.51 respectively. The SWAT-MODFLOW considerably enhanced the low flow simulation with the help of aquifer physical information. The total streamflow of SWAT and SWAT-MODFLOW were 718.6 mm and 854.9 mm occupying baseflow of 342.9 mm and 423.5 mm respectively.
