  • The conceptual rainfall-runoff models are used to predict complex hydrological effects of a basin. However, to obtain reliable results, there are some difficulties and problems in choosing optimum model, calibrating, and verifying the chosen model suitable for hydrological characteristics of the basin. In this study, Genetic Algorithm and SCE-UA method as global optimization methods were applied to compare the each optimization technique and to analyze the application for the rainfall-runoff models. Modified TANK model that is used to calculate outflow for watershed management and reservoir operation etc. was optimized as a long term rainfall-runoff model. And storage-function model that is used to predict real-time flood using historical data was optimized as a short term rainfall-runoff model. The optimized models were applied to simulate runoff on Pyeongchang-river watershed and Bocheong-stream watershed in 2001 and 2002. In the historical data study, the Genetic Algorithm and the SCE-UA method showed consistently good results considering statistical values compared with observed data.

  • This study was performed to investigate the stream water quality characteristics in Hengjeong Bridge Basin of Dongjin River during twelve months from October, 2010 to September, 2011. Also, pollutant loads were calculated on the basis of the water quality and runoff results. The results showed that ranges of water temperature, pH and EC were $6.2{\sim}23.90^{\circ}C$, 6.32~7.78, $84.4{\sim}126.5{\mu}S/cm$ respectively. The Concentration of DO, BOD, COD, SS, Tot-N and Tot-P were observed as 6.80~9.20 mg/L, 0.40~1.60 mg/L, 1.96~4.41 mg/L, 59.60~142.20 mg/L, 1.28~3.52 mg/L, 0.001~0.07 mg/L respectively. Tot-N showed correlativity with BOD, and Tot-P showed correlativity with SS. The runoff pollutant loading of Tot-N and Tot-P were 117.94 kg/ha and 2.06 kg/ha respectively, in Hengjeong bridge of Dongjin river watershed. In the case of the correlativity between runoff pollutant loads and concentrations, Tot-N and Tot-P show low significant relationships.

  • This study has performed the regionalization of point rainfall which has the hydrological homogeneity for regional frequency analysis of the rainfall. For the study, the recorded rainfall data were collected from 60 rainfall gauge stations distributed all over country of the Korea Meteorological Administration, and 32 rainfall characteristic elements were analyzed from the collected data. Using the principal component analysis to be data reduction technique of the multivariate analysis and the cluster analysis to be grouping technique about many of rainfall characteristic elements of each station, the regionalization of point rainfall was accomplished rationally and efficiently. As the result, hydrological homogeneous regions of point rainfall were divided by 5 regions and 3 other regions, and rainfall characteristics of divided each region were analyzed and compared relatively using regional mean values of each rainfall element data.

  • Drought index calculation based on the principal hydrological parameters, such as rainfall and reservoir storage, can estimate the duration and intensity of drought in irrigation reservoirs. It is difficult to build up a drought criteria since the conditions change variously by the reliability of rainfall. Because of the increasing water demands, it is urgent to prepare a generalized positive countermeasure to overcome drought. Water demands can at calculated but the estimation of drought characteristics, and the effective water management method can be established. The purpose of this study is to obtain a drought index and build up a data-base on the reservoir basins for establishing the fundamental hydrological data-base. This Index can observe the behavior of the WSI(Water Supply Index) and the component indices. The results summarized through this study are as follows. 1. WSI value of zero does not correspond to 100% in average due to the skewness in the probability distributions. 2. WSI is not a linear index; that is, given change in terms of water volume or percentage of average does not result in a proportional change on the WSI scale. 3. WSI is not always between the reservoir and the rainfall index in magnitude. This is only true if the component indices are of opposite sign. If they are of the same sign, the SWSI will often have a mangitude greater than either of the component indices. This is easily understood, because the concurrence of extreme values of the same sign for the two components is rarer than the occurrence of extreme values for either of the two components individually.

  • In order to investigate the applicability and suitability of the industrial by-products to landfill final cover, field pilot-scale lysimeter experiments were carried out. The mixture of loamy soil, bottom ash, and construction waste was placed as a cover material in lysimeter($2m{\times}6m{\times}1.2m$) which were constructed with cement brick, and then, volumetric water contents, pF value, and the quantity of runoff and seepage of treatment boxes filled with the mixture of loamy soil and the industrial by-products were monitored from July, 2007 to February, 2008. As a result, the case containing the mixture of bottom ash and loamy soil was most effective in engineering and hydrological properties and water retention ability.

  • The ensemble optimal interpolation (EnOI) scheme is a sub-optimal alternative to the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) with a reduced computational demand making it potentially more suitable for operational applications. Since only one model is integrated forward instead of an ensemble of model realizations, online estimation of the background error covariance matrix is not possible in the EnOI scheme. In this study, we investigate two Gaussian noise based ensemble generation strategies to produce dynamic covariance matrices for assimilation of water level observations into a distributed hydrological model. In the first approach, spatially correlated noise, sampled from a normal distribution with a fixed fractional error parameter (which controls its standard deviation), is added to the model forecast state vector to prepare the ensembles. In the second method, we use an adaptive error estimation technique based on the innovation diagnostics to estimate this error parameter within the assimilation framework. The results from a real and a set of synthetic experiments indicate that the EnOI scheme can provide better results when an optimal EnKF is not identified, but performs worse than the ensemble filter when the true error characteristics are known. Furthermore, while the adaptive approach is able to reduce the sensitivity to the fractional error parameter affecting the first (non-adaptive) approach, results are usually worse at ungauged locations with the former.

  • The main objective of this study is to simulate design flood discharge of the Sungjoo basin. GIS and HEC-HMS were used in this study. GIS technique can extract various hydrological factors from D.E.M(Digital Elevation Model) and the parameters extracted from each watershed were applied to the HEC-HMS. As a result of this study, GIS technique is useful to tile extraction of watershed characteristics factors and HEC-HMS is successful in tile simulation of design flood discharge.

  • This study aimed to determine the relationship between rainfall-discharge patterns and maior aquatic environmental factors in a river-type reservoir. Specifically, daily monitoring was conducted in Paltang Reservoir from January 1999 to December 2001. Observation of the daily changes of the environment factors showed that natural meteorological factors and hydrological factors causing the change of water discharge had a major effect on the aquatic environment. Rainfall was the main source of hydrological changes, with its frequency a possible direct variable governing the range of discharge changes. Rainfall was weak in November${\sim}$May and heavy in June${\sim}$October (heavist in summer). The range of water discharge was greatest during summer (July to September) and lowest during winter (January to February). A principal component analysis (PCA) showed that aquatic environmental factors could be classified into three different types in the pattern of annual variation. First, type I included water temperature, turbidity, water color and organic matter (COD), which increased with increasing water discharge. Second, type ll consisted of DO and pH, which decreased with increasing water discharge. Third, type III included conductivity, alkalinity and chloride ion, which showed middle values with increasing water discharge. Monthly variation of aquatic environments explained by the first two dimensions of the PCA suggests that aquatic environments of Paltang Reservoir may have annual cycle typical of river-type reservoirs depending on hydrological factor such as water discharge.

  • A localized torrential rainfall and flash floods which are more frequently occurred by extraordinary atmospheric phenomena and rising sea surface temperature require more hydrological data collecting and analysis for small watershed. Urban watershed hydrological data monitoring system is needed because of big flood potential damage and lack of urban watershed hydrological data. Therefore, Urban Flood Disaster Management Research Center operates small experimental catchments(Sinnae1, Gunja, and Children's Park) observing and analyzing hydrological data(rainfall, stage, and discharge). In this study, the discharge of combined sewage for Gunja experimental drainage is analyzed with weekly data and day of the week data. Through several analyses in analyzing the urban runoff characteristics and managing the urban sewage system, direct runoff is calibrated and verified by the estimated values of rainfall-runoff model(SWMM).
