  • This study was carried out to examine the prediction of ship's manoeuvrability in initial design stage. New parameter representing basic hull form and stem shape were proposed. Captive model test were carried out to investigate the correlation coefficient between hydrodynamic coefficient and hull parameter. The results showed which parameter are positive correlation with hydrodynamic coefficient. Moreover correlation was examined between stem hull shape and ship's manoeuvrability. New empirical formulas for hydrodynamic coefficients were proposed These results can be used to predict a ship's manoeuvrability in initial design stage.

  • The radiation of water waves by a heaving truncated circular cylinder with damping plate is solved in the frame of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion response of a floating circular cylinder by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. Using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of hydrodynamic added mass and the damping coefficient are investigated with various system parameters, such as the radius and submergence depth of the damping plate. It is found that both added mass and the damping coefficient are significantly increased due to the arranged features of the larger damping plate with shallow submergence, which are positive factors as a motion reduction device of the floating offshore platform. Also the numerical results for an oscillating submerged disk show that the added mass is negative and that the damping coefficient has a peak value at resonant frequency when submergence depth is sufficiently small.

  • It is necessary to estimate hydrodynamic coefficients to design the auto-pilot system and motion simulator of submersible vehicle. In this paper, an algorithm was designed to estimate hydrodynamic coefficients of submersible vehicle. Using this algorithm, the hydrodynamic coefficients were estimated from measurements of full scale trial. The estimated hydrodynamic coefficients were used for the design of an auto-depth controller(ADC) of submersible vehicle, and the resulting ADC are proved to have a better performance than the previous one.

  • An analysis is made of hydrodynamic forces acting horizontally on a two-dimensional cylinder, when it is exposed to incident waves and consequently undergoes a swaying motion in shallow water. Applying the method of matched asymptotic expansions the added mass, wave damping and the wave exciting force are obtained in terms of the difference in potential across the cylinder in a simple manner. The potential jump is related to the so-called blockage coefficient which is determined purely from geometry. It is found that the wave damping coefficient can not exceed the blockage coefficient.

  • Unknown parameters can be determined by system identification techniques. Extended Kalman filter method was introduced as a real time estimator of hydrodynamic derivatives but it has the problem named the coefficient drift. In this study, 2nd order filter estimates hydrodynamic derivatives in Abkowitz model In order to reduce the coefficient drift, parallel processing is used. The measured state and ship trajectory are compared with the estimated values. Parallel processing of 2nd order filter gives very similar results to parallel processing of extended Kalman filter. Parallel processing cannot not remove the coefficient drift perfectly, but it reduces the estimation error.

  • We consider the probelem of identifying and underwater vehicle. It is assumed that a priori information about the parameteric model structure and values of the hydrodynamic coefficients is available from some other schemes. The concept of relative esnsitivity is introduced to plan and efficinet identification procedure. An analysis of the sensitivity of the overall system to a particular hydrodynamic coefficinet provides a tool to evaluate the relative importance of the same coefficient in a particular maneuver. Then it can be made possible to reduce the filter size by selecting some dominatn hydrodynamic coefficients as parameters to be estimated for a given maneuver, and this fact may be used for establishing a gradual identification scheme. The main merit of a gradual identification is substantially reduced computer burden with increased nimerical stability. An illustrative simualtion result is given.

  • This paper describes a hydrodynamic modelling study based on the Feldman's equation to predict the nonlinear and coupled maneuvering characteristics of high speed submarine. The hydrodynamic coefficients set is obtained from the modeling of the cross flow drag force and sail induced vorticity, and the captive model experiments(VPMM and RA test) results used to improved the accuracy. The results contained in this paper will be helpful to predict the behavior of tight turn maneuver and to improve the SOE(Safety Operational Envelope) analysis in case of emergency maneuver.

  • Severe radial thrust under off-design operating conditions can be a harmful factor for centrifugal pumps. In the present work, effects of geometry of a double volute casing on the hydrodynamic performance of a centrifugal pump have been investigated focusing on off-design conditions. Three-dimensional steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis was carried out by using shear stress transport turbulence model. Numerical results for the hydrodynamic performance of the centrifugal pump were validated compared with experimental data. The hydraulic efficiency and radial thrust coefficient were used as performance parameters to evaluate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the centrifugal pump. The cross-sectional area ratio of the volute casing, the expansion coefficient of the rib structure, the distance between the rib starting point and volute entrance, and radius and width of the volute entrance, and length of the rib structure, were selected as geometric parameters. Results of the parametric study show that the performance parameters are significantly affected by the geometric variables and operating conditions. Optimal configurations of the double volute casing based on the design of experiments technique show outstanding performance in terms of the efficiency and radial thrust coefficient.

  • This paper deals with the study of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir adjacent to the concrete gravity dam subjected to dynamic excitation. Widely famous finite element method is used to discretize the reservoir domain for modelling purpose. Pressure is considered as nodal variable following Eulerian approach. A suitable nonreflecting boundary condition is applied at truncated face of reservoir to make the infinite reservoir to finite one for saving the computational cost. Thorough studies have been done on generation of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir with variation of different geometrical properties. Velocity profile and hydrodynamic pressure are observed due to harmonic excitation for variation of inclination angle of dam reservoir interface. Effect of bottom slope angle and inclined length of reservoir bottom on hydrodynamic pressure coefficient of reservoir are also observed. There is significant increase in hydrodynamic pressure and distinct changes in velocity profile of reservoir are noticeable for change in inclination angle of dam reservoir interface. Change of bottom slope and inclined length of reservoir bottom are also governing factor for variation of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir subjected to dynamic excitation.
