  • Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro provides utilizing renewable power and reduce the using fossil fuels. On the other hand, it is too critical to apply power system due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, the continuous fluctuations of the power load, and the storage with high energy density. Energy storage system, including pumped-hydroelectric energy storage, compressed-air energy storage, superconducting magnetic energy storage, and electrochemical devices like batteries, supercapacitors and others have shown that solve some of the challenges. In this paper, we review the current state of applications of energy storage systems, and atomic layer deposition technology, graphene materials on the energy storage systems and processes.

영국의 신재생에너지 정책-바이오매스를 중심으로 (Renewable Energy Policy in the UK - with Focus on Biomass)

  • As one of renewable energy sources, biomass is playing a major role in reducing the greenhouse gas emission in the UK. The country currently produces about 4.5% (18.1TWh in 2006) of the total electricity generation from renewables, where biomass-based sources accounts for 50% of the amount and the remainder mostly from hydro and windpower. In 2007, the UK government has announced its new energy policy through the Energy White Paper, which includes an ambitious national target of 60% cuts in carbon emission by 2050. Complementary strategic plans in key renewable energy technologies accompanied the Energy White Paper, including biomass strategy, waste strategy and low carbon transportation strategy. This paper summarizes the current status and policy of UK for renewable energy production with focus on the use of biomass and bioenergy.

방사성폐기물 처분 사일로의 손상연동 수리-역학 복합거동 해석모델 개발 (Development of hydro-mechanical-damage coupled model for low to intermediate radioactive waste disposal concrete silos)

  • 본 연구에서는 방사성폐기물 처분구조물의 안전성 및 건전성 평가를 위해 손상연동 수리-역학 복합 거동 해석 모델을 개발하였다. 콘크리트나 암반과 같은 취성재료의 파괴 모사에 널리 사용되는 Mazars 손상 모델을 선정하여 수리-역학 해석에 연동하였고, 예제 및 정해를 기반으로 개발된 해석 모델을 검증하였다. 개발된 해석 모델의 손상 입력 인자를 도출하기 위해 처분구조물 콘크리트 배합비로 제작한 시료를 대상으로 건조/포화 양생 조건에서 일축압축강도 및 간접인장강도 시험을 수행하였다. 실내 시험을 통해 도출한 입력 인자는 경주 월성 원자력 환경관리센터의 동굴처분 콘크리트 사일로를 모사한 2차원 유한요소해석에 적용하여 손상 고려 유무, 해석 기법 및 폐기물 하중 재하 조건에 따른 영향을 분석하였다. 연구를 통해 개발된 수리-역학-손상 모델은 향후 고준위 방사성폐기물 처분을 위한 심층처분장의 장기 거동 및 안정성 해석에 적용할 계획이다.

초소수력발전용 좁은 수로 고정형 수직수차 성능실험 (Experiments on Efficiency of Standing Type Waterwheel with Narrow Canal for Micro/Small Scale Hydro Power Plant)

  • Recently, small scale hydropower needs to be developed due to its clean, renewable and abundant energy resources. However, suitable draft of hydro-turbine body in combination with differences in wheel blade shapes is not determined yet in the range of small hydropower and it is necessary to study for the effective draft in combination with type. Therefore, watermill shaped of 250mm diameter. hydro-turbine aiming 20 watt class generator is adopted in this study because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to small hydropower. The result shows that effective draft for the turbine body is variable concerning the size of turbine and flow rate of water. Thus, the difference of water depth between fore and aft turbine body contributes to the increase of torque, angular momentum and power output.

Optimal design of passive containment cooling system for innovative PWR

  • Using the Generation of Thermal-Hydraulic Information for Containments (GOTHIC) code, thermal-hydraulic phenomena that occur inside the containment have been investigated, along with the preliminary design of the passive containment cooling system (PCCS) of an innovative pressurized water reactor (PWR). A GOTHIC containment model was constructed with reference to the design data of the Advanced Power Reactor 1400, and report related PCCS. The effects of the design parameters were evaluated for passive containment cooling tank (PCCT) geometry, PCCS heat exchanger (PCCX) location, and surface area. The analyzed results, obtained using the single PCCT, showed that repressurization and reheating phenomena had occurred. To resolve these problems, a coupled PCCT concept was suggested and was found to continually decrease the containment pressure and temperature without repressurization and reheating. If the installation level of the PCCX is higher than that of the PCCT, it may affect the PCCS performance. Additionally, it was confirmed that various means of increasing the external surface area of the PCCX, such as fins, could help improve the energy removal performance of the PCCS. To improve the PCCS design and investigate its performance, further studies are needed.

Performance testing of a FastScan whole body counter using an artificial neural network

  • In Korea, all nuclear power plants (NPPs) participate in annual performance tests including in vivo measurements using the FastScan, a stand type whole body counter (WBC), manufactured by Canberra. In 2018, all Korean NPPs satisfied the testing criterion, the root mean square error (RMSE) ≤ 0.25, for the whole body configuration, but three NPPs which participated in an additional lung configuration test in the fission and activation product category did not meet the criterion. Due to the low resolution of the FastScan NaI(Tl) detectors, the conventional peak analysis (PA) method of the FastScan did not show sufficient performance to meet the criterion in the presence of interfering radioisotopes (RIs), 134Cs and 137Cs. In this study, we developed an artificial neural network (ANN) to improve the performance of the FastScan in the lung configuration. All of the RMSE values derived by the ANN satisfied the criterion, even though the photopeaks of 134Cs and 137Cs interfered with those of the analytes or the analyte photopeaks were located in a low-energy region below 300 keV. Since the ANN performed better than the PA method, it would be expected to be a promising approach to improve the accuracy and precision of in vivo FastScan measurement for the lung configuration.

GIS 기반 신재생에너지 자원지도시스템 구축 (The Establishment of the GIS based Resource Map System for New and Renewable Energy)

  • New and renewable energy information becomes one of the greatest issues because of serious environment problems and limited fossil resources. However, There are few system to manage and utilize new and renewable energy information efficiently. Therefore this study establish the GIS based Resource Map System to save and analyze new and renewable energy information about solar energy, wind power, small hydro, biomass, and geothermal. This Resource Map System is composed of the management system, practical system, field system, and Web-service system. This System can provide various spatial analysis tools such as data searching, creating thematic maps, evaluating location requirements for energy facilities.

  • 위험도 평가기준을 발전함수를 고려하여 단일저수지에 적용한 박명기 등(2001)의 혼합정수계획법 모형을 다중저수지군 운영에 적합하도록 개선하였다. 본 모형중의 축차선형계획기법(SLP)은 목적함수중 수력발전함수의 선형화를 위하여 적용되었으며, 저수지 방류량의 합리적인 월별 방류배분을 위하여 수력발전량에 대한 가중치를 발전시간 수준별로 적용하도록 정식화요소에 반영하였다. 개선된 모형은 한강수계 5개 저수지군에 시험적용 하였으며, 수계내 연계운영을 위한 복합저수지군의 최적연계에 본 위험도 평가기준을 적용할수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

유체 주입 중단이 유발 지진 규모에 미치는 영향에 대한 수리역학적 기초 연구 (A Hydro-Mechanical Basic Study on the Effect of Shut-in on Injection-Induced Seismic Magnitude)

  • 본 연구에서는 유체 주입 중단과 유발 지진 규모의 관계에 대하여 수리역학적으로 분석하였다. 수리적 해석을 통해 공극압의 구배가 유체 주입 중단으로 인해 완만해짐과 동시에 주입 중단 이후에도 수 시간 동안 압력 선두에서 상당한 임계 공극압에 도달하면서 더 넓은 영역에서 추가적인 전단을 일으킬 수 있음을 확인하였다. 수리역학 복합 해석을 단순화된 균열모델에 적용함으로써 유체 주입 중단 후에 최대 규모의 지진이 발생하는 것을 모사하였고, 유체 주입을 유지하는 경우와의 비교를 통해 급작스런 유체 주입 중단이 지진 유발에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한 공극압의 분포 이외에도 단층 간의 기하학적 관계와 응력 재분배 등에 의해 임계 공극압의 구배가 변하며 이것이 유발 지진의 규모 평가에 중요하게 고려되어야 함을 확인하였다.

Second intercomparison on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) retrospective dosimetry in Korea using hydroxyapatite

  • The Korea retrospective dosimetry (KREDOS)-electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) group undertook an intercomparison investigation utilizing hydroxyapatite. This analysis involved four institutions: the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, Korean Association for Radiation Application, and Radiation Health Institute of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power. Following the irradiation of the hydroxyapatite sample, the recorded build-up was analyzed. To validate the reliability of the EPR dosimetry findings and enhance its operational performance, a hydroxyapatite dose-response curve was plotted and dosimetry was performed for a blind sample. The proficiency of each laboratory was assessed by employing an interlaboratory comparison methodology. This involved a comparative analysis of the measurement results by calculating the relative bias, z-score, and En value. The results submitted by the participating laboratories demonstrated satisfactory ratings for doses of 1.006, 3.999, and 6.993 Gy. Following the second intercomparison, efforts to optimize their hydroxyapatite-EPR dosimetry systems are underway in the participating laboratories. The current assessment of hydroxyapatite dose yielded the foundational data required to establish the parameters of dental dosimetry. In future, the third intercomparison experiment will be conducted for exploring other materials.
