  • Copper fine particles, ranging from $0.11{\mu}m$ to $0.64{\mu}m$ in average size, were prepared by a chemical reduction method using hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) as a reduction agent in waste copper solutions. The effect of the amount of hydrazine addition was investigated on the properties of the obtained powders. Also, the effect of the addition of dispersing agents [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)] during particle synthesis was studied. The powders, obtained from 1 M waste copper solutions, showed the mixtures of Cu and $Cu_2O$ crystals at low hydrazine addition amounts of 0.8 mol and 1.0 mol, while those exhibited pure Cu crystals at adequate hydrazine addition amount of 0.12 mol. The average size of the Cu powders decreased with increasing the concentrations of hydrazine and dispersing agents. The addition of PVA to the solutions as a dispersing agent was more effective than that of PVP in preventing the aggregation of particles.

  • In order to prepare the uniform copper particles from copper sulfate solution by using hydrazine as a reduction agents, the reduction behavior of copper particles from copper sulfate was investigated in detail at room temperature by the observation of reaction products. The effects of $NH_4$OH and $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{7}$ on the formation of uniform copper particles were discussed. ($NHCu_3$)$_4$$SO_4$was completely formed at over pH 11 by adding $NH_4$OH in copper sulfate solution. The fine $Cu_2$O with the particle size of 50 nm was produced in the initial reduction process of (NH$Cu_3$)$_4$$SO_4$solution with $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{ 7}$ and then the Cu$_2$O was converted into copper particles by inserting additional hydrazine. When Cu(NH$_3$)$_4$SO$_4$solution with $Na_4$$P_2$$O_{ 7}$ was reduced at $80^{\circ}C$ by hydrazine, the highly dispersed copper particles with the particle size of about 0.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was obtained.

  • Nanocrystalline SnO and $SnO_{2}$ powder have been prepared by hydrazine method. Sn-Hydrazine complex was formed by the reduction between aqueous $SnCl_{2}$ solution and hydrazine monohydrate. $SnO_{2}$ nano powder was prepared by the decomposition of Sn-Hydrazine complex at $450^{\circ}C$. When NaOH was added to Sn-hydrazine complex, SnO powder with nano-sheet morphology could be prepared. This can be attributed to the role of $OH^{-}$ ion as a reducing agent.

  • We studied the basic properties and fabrication of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared using eco-friendly reduction agents in the graphene solution process. Hydrazine is generally used to reduce graphene oxide (GO), which results in polluting emissions as well as fixed nitrogen functional groups on different defects in the graphene sheets. To replace hydrazine, we developed eco-friendly reduction agents with similar or better reducing properties, and selected of them for further analysis. In this study, GO layers were produced from graphite flakes using a modified Hummer's method, and rGO layers were reduced using hydrazine hydrate, L-ascorbic acid, and gluconic acid. We measured the particle sizes and the dispersion stabilities in the rGO dispersed solvents for the three agents and analyzed the structural, electrical, and optical properties of the rGO films. The results showed that the degree of reduction was in the order L-ascorbic acid ${\geq}$ hydrazine > glucose. GO reduced using L-ascorbic acid had a sheet resistance of $121k{\Omega}/sq$, while that reduced using gluconic acid showed worse electrical properties than the other two reduction agents. Therefore, L-ascorbic acid is the most suitable eco-friendly reduction agent that can be substituted for hydrazine.

  • Spherical fine cobalt powders were fabricated by new liquid reduction method. Commercial cobalt sufate heptahydrate was used as raw material. Also ethylene glycol was used as solvent and hydrazine-sodium hypophosphite mixture was used as reduction agent for the new liquid reduction method. A plate shaped cobalt powders with an approximately 300 nm were prepared by a traditional wet ruduction method using distilled water as solvent and hydrazine. Spherical fine cobalt powders with an average size of $1-3{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a new liquid reduction method in 0.3M cobalt sulfate and 1.5M hydrazine-0.6M sodium hypophosphite mixture at 333K.

  • Voltammogram analysis of U(VI) reduction at electrochemically non-pretreated/pretreated Ti electrodes in nitric acid and hydrazine($N_2$H$_4$)/protonated hydrazine($N_2$H$_{5}$$^{+}$) media was done in order to determine the effect of hydrazine form and Ti electrode condition on the reduction of U(VI) in nitric acid. In the case of non-pretreated Ti electrode, the reduction in nitric acid and hydrazine mono-hydrate solution needed a high activation overpotential and was affected by the ratio of hydrazine to nitric acid rather than by only absolute amount of hydrazine because of the decrease of solution conductivity and increase of iR drop, which were caused by proton consumption in the solution by the hydrazine. In the case of pretreated Ti electrode in nitric acid and protonated hydrazine solution, the reduction current peaks of U(VI) were clearer and higher enough to perform a kinetic analysis, compared with the case with the non-pretreated Ti electrode at the same potential, and the behavior was strongly affected by nitric acid. The presence of hydrazine was important in the reduction of U(VI) at the pretreated Ti electrode for preventing the reoxidation of U(IV), but the concentration of protonated hydrazine was not.t.

  • Hydrazine derivatives used in fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics can be synthesized by reduction reaction from diazonium derivatives. The reduction method using $SnCl_2$ facilitates the reaction conversion, but the use of $SnCl_2$ is limited when residual heavy metals are issued in the final product. For the conversion of protected (2-hydroxyphenyl)diazonium derivatives into its hydrazine derivatives in Ramalin preparation process, the reduction method was developed by using $NaHSO_3$. In this study, the effect of steric hindrance according to the protected 2-hydroxygroupinphenyldiazonium derivatives was found, and linear C1~C5 alkyl groups for the hydroxy protection were preferable during the diazonium reduction reaction. Considering the economical efficiency and industrial production for the preparation of Ramalin, a variety of protecting groups were investigated. As a result, 2-(allyloxyphenyl)hydrazine was obtained with 85% yield and 99.7% purity when the hydroxy protecting group was used as an allyl group that could be easily deprotected.

  • The feasibility of using hydrazine for inhibiting pitting corrosion in copper sprinkler tubes was investigated by examining microscopical and structural evolution of corrosion by-products with SEM, EDS, and XRD. Hydrazine removed dissolved oxygen and reduced CuO and $Cu_2O$ as well. The stable phase was changed from CuO to $Cu_2O$ or Cu depending on hydrazine concentration. Hydrazine concentration of 500 ppm could convert all CuO corrosion by-products to $Cu_2O$. In a tightly sealed acryl tube filled with aqueous solution of 500 ppm hydrazine, octahedral $Cu_2O$ particles were formed while plate-like structures with high concentration of Cu, O, N and C were formed near a corrosion pit. The inside structure of a corrosion pit was not altered by hydrazine aqueous solution. Uniform corrosion of copper was almost completely stopped in aqueous solution of 500 ppm hydrazine. Corrosion potential of a copper plate was linearly dependent on log (hydrazine concentration). The concept of stopping pitting corrosion reaction by suppressing oxygen reduction reaction could be verified by applying this method to a reasonable number of real sprinkler systems before full-scale application.

  • The preparation of Ag nano-powder from aqueous silver nitrate solution, which would be available for the recycling of silver bearing wastes, was investigated by a reductive precipitation reaction using hydrazine hydrate as a reducing agent. Silver solution was prepared by dissolving silver nitrate with distilled water, and then the dispersant, Tamol NN8906 or Tween 20, was also mixed to avoid the agglomeration of particles during the reductive reaction followed by the addition of hydrazine hydrate to prepare Ag nano-particles. Ag particles obtained from the reduction reaction from silver solution were characterized using the particle size analyzer and TEM to determine the particle size distribution and morphology. It was found that about 100% excess of hydrazine hydrate was required to reduce completely silver ions in the solution. Ag powders with very narrow distribution could be obtained when Tamol NN8906 was used as the dispersant. In case of Tween 20, the particle size distribution showed typically the bimodal or multimodal distribution and the morphology of Ag particles was found to be irregular shape in both cases.
