  • This study investigates the effect of nano-silica and nano-calcite on the hydration properties and mechanical performance of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) paste. The pastes were synthesized by replacing limestone with nano-silica and nano-calcite in order to enhance the mechanical properties in both early and late stages of hydration. The nano-calcite enhanced the strength of LC3 pastes at 1 day of hydration, however, the strength decreased compared to the ordinary LC3 pastes afterwards due to excessive amount of carboaluminate produced in the pastes. On the other hand, nano-silica improved the mechanical properties of LC3 pastes at all ages of hydration. This is mainly due to the nucleation effect and pozzolanic reaction of nano-silica, affecting the early age and late ages of hydration, respectively. The nucleation effect of both nanomaterials were confirmed by the analysis of hydration heat, supporting the enhanced early age strength of nanomaterial incorporated LC3 pastes. Furthermore, the dense matrix was shown in the pore size distribution, and the increased C-S-H due to the pozzolanic reaction evidence the improved compressive and splitting tensile strength of nano-silica incorporated LC3 pastes.

  • It has been reported that the magnitude and the development rate of autogenous shrinkage of cement paste, mortar and concrete were affected by history and magnitude of inner temperature at an early age. But it was not enough to explain the relation between hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage at an early age, because there was no certain analysis on histories of hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage in previous studies. In our prior study, to understand the relationship between hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage of concrete at an early age, the analysis method for histories of hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage was suggested. Based on this method, early age properties of hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage of high strength concrete with different sizes and hydration retardation were investigated in this study. As a result of the study, properties of hydration temperature and autogenous shrinkage were different according to specimen size and hydration retardation. However, there was a close relationship between hydration temperature and autogenous shrinkage at an early age, especially between HHV and ASV as linear slopes of the sections where hydration temperature and autogenous shrinkage increase rapidly; the higher HHV, the higher ASV and the greater ultimate autogenous shrinkage. And it was found that, among the setting time, bend point and temperature increasing point, they were close relationship each other on cement hydration process.

  • Hydraulic properties of CA2-based clinker synthesized by Hydration-Burning Method was studied by calorimetry, analysis of suspension, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. Hydraulic properties of the clinker was so activated that heat of hydration of the clinker evolved faster than that of CA synthesized by conventional method. In suspension of W/C=33, dissolution of the clinker began at nearly same time as that of CA, but precipitation of AH3 and rise of [OH-] occurred fairly faster in the suspension of the clinker than that of CA. From the beginning of hydration, AH3 was produced and became a main phase of the hydrate with minor phase of CAH10 and C2AH8, but C3AH6 was not produced at ambient temperature.

  • Recently, owing to the development of industry and improvement of building techniques, concrete structures are becoming larger and higher. This study was performed to analyze hydration reation properties of concrete with binders and admixtures, such as OPC, low heat cement, belite rich cement, slag powder, lime powder and fly ash. To investigate effects of PC type superplasticizer on the hydration, experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, DSC, SEM were analyzed at the curing age 1day, 3days and 28days. The hydration reaction rate of OPC concrete slightly delayed at the curing age 1day, blast furnace slag powder and fly ash were more effective. BRC and LHC concretes can be used for concrete structures in winter season.

  • Re-hydration properties of heated and ground CaO-SiO2-H2O system were studied under hydrothermal condition in order to examine the possibility of recycling ALC waste as raw materials of ALC. Powder of calcium silicate hydrates and ALC waste without heat treatment did not show further hydration while those of heat-treated at proper temperature showed re-hydration properties under hydrothermal condition. The lath-like shape of initially synthesized tobermorite was gradually turned into small debris during heating and plate-like tobermorite was crystallized during re-hydration of the heated powders. Heated and ground ALC waste could be added to natural raw mix for ALC at the ammount up to 20% with increased compressive strength and up to 30% with slightly decreased compressive strength. The optimum heating temperature of ALC for recycling was about 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • $\alpha$-tricalcium phosphate($\alpha$-TCP) powders were synthesized and their hydration properties were investigated in Tris. solution. Two kinds of $\alpha$-TCP powder samples were prepared; the one is reaction product of CaHPO4.2H2O and CaCO3, and another is that of hydroxyapatite(HAp) and $\beta$-Ca2P2O7. They were satisfied with Ca/P mole ratio 1.5 and were heated at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. In the hydration of $\alpha$-TCP samples the powder which was synthesized from HAp and $\beta$-Ca2P2O7 was hydrated faster than that from CaHPO4.2H2O and CaCO3. The hydration reaction of $\alpha$-TCP powder transformed rapidly into HAp accompanying setting and hardening. It was realized that the hydration reaction of $\alpha$-TCP was due to the solution-precipitation mechanism and the hydrates from the reaction were Ca-deficient HAp having funtional group HPO42-.

  • In this study, as one part of the studies on the mechanical properties of the polymer electrolyte membrane, a study was conducted on the change in the mechanical properties due to hydration before and after aging of the polymer electrolyte membrane. The mechanical properties of the polymer electrolyte membrane changes due to hydration were confirmed through tensile tests of hydrated and non-hydrated Nafion 117. As results of this study, non-hydrated membrane showed higher mechanical properties than hydrated thing in the elastic region and some plastic regions. But, it was confirmed that hydrated membrane exhibited higher mechanical properties than non-hydrated thing in the large plastic region. Hydrated membrane has a lower glass transition temperature than non-hydrated thing due to the role of water as a plasticizer. In addition, the number of ion aggregates decreases, but the size increases, and the hydrated Nafion 117 is thought to have different mechanical properties from that of the non-hydrated thing due to the characteristic that the internal attraction is strengthened.

  • In order to investigate the effect of fineness on the properties of Portland cement, we prepared five kinds of portland cements with different Blaine values(2300, 2500, 3000, 3500, 45oo $\textrm{cm}^2$/g) and measured Ca(OH)2 analysis, hydration heat, the fluidity and the physical properties of them. According to the results, as the Blain value of cement is lower, the rate of hydration is delayed, and the hydration heat and the compressive strength are decreased. But the fluidity of cement paste is improved. Especially, the hydration heat of the cement with 2500$\textrm{cm}^2$/g of Blaine value is decreased about 15% compared with 3500 $\textrm{cm}^2$/g cement.

  • The aim of the research is to investigate the fundamental properties and heat of hydration reducing performance of the fly ash incorporated concrete mixture when the coal gas slag (CGS) from integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is used as fine aggregate. From the results of the experiment, the workability was generally increased and the air content was decreased up to one to four percent with increasing the replacing ratio of CGS to fine aggregate. The compressive strength was similar or increased within five percent to the Plain mixture when the CGS was used as a fine aggregate. When the CGS and fly ash were used same time, the heat of hydration reducing performance was improved than single using cases either CGS or fly ash. Based on the results, for the concrete mixture using CSG as a portion of the combined fine aggregate, the general properties were improved and heat of hydration was decreased approximately 16 % when the fly ash was replaced 30 % to cement and the CGS was replaced less than 50 % to fine aggregate.
