  • In this paper, we propose a new optical hybrid switching system that takes advantage of both Optical Burst Switching (OBS) and Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) technologies. This system classifies incoming IP traffic flows into short-lived and long-lived flows for hybrid switching. For performance analysis, we model the system as a single server queue in a Markovian environment. The burst generation process is assumed to follow a two-state Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP), and the service rate fluctuates based on the number of concurrent OCS sessions. Results of the mean delay and queue size for OBS bursts are derived.

  • This paper proposes a high efficiency power conversion system for battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storages. The proposed system has only one bidirectional dc-dc converter for hybrid power source with batteries and ultracapacitors. The hybrid power source has bidirectional switching circuits for selecting one energy storage device. Bidirectional power flow between the energy storage device and high voltage capacitor can be controlled by one bidirectional converter. An asymmetrical switching method is applied to the bidirectional converter for high power efficiency. Switching power losses are reduced by zero-voltage switching of power switches. System operation and design considerations are presented. The experimental results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed system.

  • The operation principle of an axial flux-switching hybrid excitation synchronous machine (AFHESM) is analyzed and its topology structures are proposed in this paper. After some comprehensive analysis of the operation principle to axial flux electrical machine, flux-switching electrical machine and hybrid excitation electrical machine, the operation principle of AFHESM is given. Combined with some typical topological structures of hybrid excitation electrical machine, some possible topological structures are proposed and some comprehensive comparisons are carried out. The analysis results show that the stator-separated AFHESM has some advantages such as less AM turns, less impact on the demagnetization of PM, less magnetic flux-leakage and higher efficiency compared to other topologies.

  • This paper proposes the method to implement the railroad switching point heating system using the hybrid of the photovoltaic and wind power. The goal of the implementation of the railroad switching point heating system is to prevent freezing of the snow in the winter. The heating system of railway used to supply electricity through photovoltaic and wind power to prevent freezing. Hot wires of the railroad switching point heating system are used about 2kW of electric energy at the day. The electric energy of 2kW used the length of the hot wires about 3m. As the ON and/or OFF mode considering the tracks temperature and the ambient temperature, so the way the use of power-saving effect. In addition, the system can be used the railroad switching point heating system in winter and railway signal and street lights around the track in summer. In experiment, we acquired the power data according to time at the day of photovoltaic and wind power. We confirmed the temperature rise using the heating cable for 3m of $85^{\circ}C$, 30W/m. The temperature rise of the heating cable changes the temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ after 10 minutes and $11^{\circ}C$ after 10 minutes. We have confirmed the possibility of the railroad switching point heating system using the hybrid of the photovoltaic and wind power.

  • Voltage source inverters (VSIs) are widely used to drive induction motors in industry applications. The quality of output waveforms depends on the switching sequences used in pulse width modulation (PWM). In this work, all existing optimal space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) switching strategies are studied. The performance of existing SVPWM switching strategies is optimized to realize a tradeoff between quality of output waveforms and switching losses. This study generalizes the existing optimal switching sequences for total harmonic distortions (THDs) and switching losses for different modulation indexes and reference angles with a parameter called quality factor. This factor provides a common platform in which the THDs and switching losses of different SVPWM techniques can be compared. The optimal spatial distribution of each sequence is derived on the basis of the quality factor to minimize harmonic current distortions and switching losses in a sector; the result is the minimum ripple loss SVPWM (MRSLPWM). By employing the sequences from optimized switching maps, the proposed method can simultaneously reduce THDs and switching losses. Two hybrid SVPWM techniques are proposed to reduce line current distortions and switching losses in motor drives. The proposed hybrid SVPWM strategies are MRSLPWM 30 and MRSLPWM 90. With a low-cost PIC microcontroller (PIC18F452), the proposed hybrid SVPWM techniques and the quality of output waveforms are experimentally validated on a 2 kVA VSI based on a three-phase two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor.

  • In hybrid energy storage systems, supercapacitors are usually connected in series to meet the required voltage levels. Equalizers are effective in prolonging the life of hybrid energy storage systems because they eliminate the voltage imbalance on cells. This study proposes a modularized equalizer, which is based on a combination of a half-bridge inverter, an inductor, and two auxiliary capacitors. The proposed equalizer inherits the advantages of inductor-based equalization systems, but it also offers unique merits, such as low switching losses and an easy-to-use control algorithm. The zero-voltage switching scheme is analyzed, and the power model is established. A fixed-frequency operation strategy is proposed to simplify the control and lower the cost. The switching patterns and conditions for zero-voltage switching are discussed. Simulation results based on PSIM are presented to verify the validity of the proposed equalizer. An equalization test for two supercapacitor cells is performed. An experimental hybrid energy storage system, which consists of batteries and supercapacitors, is established to verify the performance of the proposed equalizer. The analysis, simulation results, and experimental results are in good agreement, thus indicating that the circuit is practical.

  • This paper presents a new cascaded asymmetrical single phase multilevel converter with a lower number of power semiconductor switches and isolated DC sources. Therefore, the number of power electronic devices, converter losses, size, and cost are reduced. The proposed multilevel converter topology consists of two H-bridges connected in cascaded configuration. One H-bridge operates at a high frequency (high frequency inverter) and is capable of developing a two level output while the other H-bridge operates at the fundamental frequency (low frequency inverter) and is capable of developing a multilevel output. The addition of each power electronic switch to the low frequency inverter increases the number of levels by four. This paper also introduces a hybrid switching algorithm which uses very simple arithmetic and logical operations. The simplified hybrid switching algorithm is generalized for any number of levels. The proposed simplified switching algorithm is developed using a TMS320F2812 DSP board. The operation and performance of the proposed multilevel converter are verified by simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK and experimental results.

  • In this paper, carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM), space vector PWM (SVPWM) and reduced switching losses PWM (RSLPWM) for the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter are introduced. In the case of the neutral point (NP) potential (NPP) offset, an asymmetric disposition PWM (ASPDPWM) strategy is proposed, which can output PWM sequences correctly and suppress the lower order harmonics of the inverter effectively. An NPP balance strategy based on carrier based PWM (CBPWM) is analyzed. A hybrid modulation strategy combining RSLPWM and the NPP balance based on CBPWM is proposed, and hysteresis control is adopted to switch between the two modulation strategies. An experimental prototype of the three-level NPC inverter is built. The effectiveness of the hybrid modulation is verified with a resistance-inductance load and a permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM) load, respectively. The experimental results show that reduced switching losses and an acceptable NPP can be effectively achieved in the hybrid modulation strategy.

  • Replacing conventional Si diodes with SiC diodes in Si insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules is advantageous as it can reduce power losses significantly. Also, the fast switching nature of the SiC diode will allow Si IGBTs to operate at their full high-switching-speed potential, which at present conventional Si diodes cannot do. In this work, the electrical test results for Si-IGBT/4HSiC-Schottky hybrid substrates (hybrid SiC substrates) are presented. These substrates are built for two voltage ratings, 1.7 kV and 3.3 kV. Comparisons of the 1.7 kV and the 3.3 kV Si-IGBT/Si-diode substrates (Si substrates) at room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$, RT) and high temperature ($H125^{\circ}C$, HT) have shown that the switching losses in hybrid SiC substrates are miniscule as compared to those in Si substrates but necessary steps are required to mitigate the ringing observed in the current waveforms. Also, the effect of design variations on the electrical performance of 1.7 kV, 50 A diodes is reported here. These variations are made in the active and termination regions of the device.
