Deposition of Aerosols on Leaves in a Cool-temperate Larch Forest in Northern Hokkaido, Japan

  • Aerosol concentrations at the CC-Lag site in the Teshio Experimental Forest increased from winter to spring and sometimes showed extremely high values associated with Kosa and/or forest-fire events. The range and mean of the mass concentrations of aerosol chemical species were as follows: total particulate mass, 1.2-29, 5.0; elemental carbon, 0.061-2.2, 0.43; organic carbon, 0.059-3.5, 0.79; and sulfate, 0.12-6.2, 1.8 ${\mu}g/m^3$. The total masses of the deposited particles on hybrid larch and on bamboo leaves were approximately 35 and 30 ${\mu}g/cm^2$, respectively. The amounts of soil particles on the leaves were 6 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for the upper part of hybrid larch, 2 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for the lower part of hybrid larch, and 1 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for Sasa bamboo leaves. The amounts of deposited black carbon were 2.3 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for the upper part of hybrid larch, 0.6 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for the lower part of hybrid larch, and 0.2 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for Sasa bamboo leaves. Half of the total deposited particular mass was attached on the hybrid larch; however, most of the total deposited mass was adhered on the Sasa bamboo leaves. Regardless of the species, there tend to be more deposited particles on the leaves in the upper part than in the lower part, with only a few meters height difference. Comparing the composition of the deposited particles to that of the atmospheric aerosols without any size cut, the fractions of water-soluble material sulfate and sea salt in the deposited aerosols were about one tenth and one hundredth lower than that in the aerosols, respectively. On the basis of the measured concentration and the deposited amount on leaves, the deposition velocity of black carbon was estimated to be approximately 0.5 cm/s.

Optimizing Multiprecision Squaring for Efficient Public Key Cryptography on 8-bit Sensor Nodes (8 비트 센서 노드 상에서 효율적인 공개키 암호를 위한 다정도 제곱 연산의 최적화)

  • Multiprecision squaring is one of the most significant algorithms in the core public key cryptography operation. The aim of this work is to present a new improved squaring algorithm compared with the MIRACL's multi precision squaring algorithm in which the previous work [1] on multiprecision multiplication is implemented. First, previous works on multiprecision multiplication and standard squaring are analyzed. Then, our new Lazy Doubling squaring algorithm is introduced. In MIRACLE library [3], Scott's Carry-Catcher Hybrid multiplication technique [1] is applied to implementation of multiprecision multiplication and squaring. Experimental results of the Carry-Catcher hybrid squaring algorithm and the proposed Lazy Doubling squaring algorithm both of which are tested on Atmega128 CPU show that proposed idea has achieved significant performance improvements. The proposed Lazy Doubling Squaring algorithm reduces addition instructions by the fact $a_0\;{\ast}\;2\;+\;a_1\;{\ast}\;2\;+\;...\;+\;a_{n-1}\;{\ast}\;2\;+\;a_n\;{\ast}\;2\;=\;(a_0\;+\;a_1\;+\;...\;+\;a_{n-1}\;+\;a_n)\;{\ast}\;2$ while the standard squaring algorithm reduces multiplication instructions by the fact $S_{ij}\;=\;x_i\;{\ast}\;x_j\;=\;S_{ij}$. Experimental results show that the proposed squaring method is 25% faster than that in MIRACL.

Optimization of a Flywheel PMSM with an External Rotor and a Slotless Stator

  • An electrical machine for a high-speed flywheel for energy storage in large hybrid electric vehicles is described. Design choices for the machine are motivated: it is a radial-flux external-rotor permanent-magnet synchronous machine without slots in the stator iron and with a shielding cylinder. An analytical model of the machine is briefly introduced whereafter optimization of the machine is discussed. Three optimization criteria were chosen: (1) torque; (2) total stator losses and (3) induced eddy current loss on the rotor. The influence of the following optimization variables on these criteria is investigated: (1) permanent-magnet array; (2) winding distribution and (3) machine geometry. The paper shows that an analytical model of the machine is very useful in optimization.

  • It is very important to control the vibration transmitted from external utilities and the transient response due to the internal sources for the precision equipment, which is very sensitive to the vibration environment. The anti-vibration tables that use air springs have been widely used due to their excellent isolation performance, but the systems with high flexibility have the critical problem of large transient response by the impulsive force of the moving mass in operation of the equipment. In this paper, the hybrid vibration control system is proposed, which is combined the air springs with the semi-active MR dampers in order to satisfy the performances of isolation and vibration reduction simutaneously.

  • Most of the railway traffic control systems are using in the DBMS(Database Management System)is a disk-based DBMS. When the train schedule and the event data is inputted and referred at real time on Disk-based DBMS, it is characteristic of the slow access time and the data is preserved permanently. For this reason, this paper suggests the way of improving for Railway Traffic Control System by the hybrid DBMS using a combination of memory and disk. We apply the Hybrid DBMS to Railway Traffic Control System and compare the existing method with suggested one using the same data. As a result of comparison, we have come to the conclusion that suggested method is far more performance to shorten data access time and process a mass information than the previous methods.

A Novel Hybrid Sequential Start Control System for Large Inductive Loads

  • The inrush current of a large inductive load can be reduced with a soft starter; however, the large inrush current caused by simultaneous bulk starts (SBSs) cannot be effectively reduced. In order to reduce the high inrush current and voltage sag owing to the SBSs of large capacity inductive loads within a power network, a novel hybrid sequential start control system is proposed, implemented on embedded systems, and evaluated with a testbed in this study. From the experimental and simulation results of the proposed control system, the inrush current could be effectively restricted below the maximum current capacity of a power distributing board. Moreover, with the proposed system, power cost typically dictated by the peak power consumption can be fairly reduced, and the quality of the power system connected to the inductive loads can be efficiently increased.

  • In this paper, Nonlinear VSS control based on bang-bang control concept is derived under the assumption that the control input is bounded. We try to derive control algorithm which has almost same performance as the time optimal control. We focus this control scheme on the real implementation of DC motor position controller of flexible link, i.e. we obtain the switching curves from the real data of DC motor system operating under the full maximum and minimum applied voltages. State space is separated into several regions and we set different switching surfaces in each region to reduce chattering problem. The efficiency of the proposed controller is compared with PID controller and it is shown that the controller converges fast than PID controller without chattering. The hybrid controller scheme is also proposed not only to control the position of hub but also to reduce the vibration of end tip of flexible link.

Force Display Based on Simultaneous Actuation of Motors and Brakes

  • In the virtual environment, force feedback to the human operator makes virtual experiences more realistic. However, the force feedback using active actuators such as motors can make the system active and sometimes unstable. To ensure the safe operation and enhance the haptic feeling, stability should be guaranteed. Both motors and brakes are commonly used for haptic device. A brake can generate a torque only against its rotation, but it is intrinsically stable. Consequently, motors and brakes are complementing each other. In this research, a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) haptic device equipped with both motors and brakes has been developed to provide better haptic effects. Each DOF is actuated by a pair of motor and brake. Modeling of the environment and the control method are needed to utilize both actuators. For various haptic effects, contact with the virtual wall and representation of friction effect are extensively investigated in this paper. It is shown that the hybrid haptic system is more suited to some applications than the motor-based active haptic system.

In this paper, IHMA (Intelligent Hybrid Modular Architecture) of Intelligent combined control architecture which utilizes the merits of deliberative and reactive controllers will be suggested and its efficiency will be evaluated through the adaptation of control architecture to representative multi-robot system.

A Hybrid Fault Diagnosis Method based on SDG and PLS;Tennessee Eastman Challenge Process

  • The hybrid fault diagnosis method based on a combination of the signed digraph (SDG) and the partial least-squares (PLS) has the advantage of improving the diagnosis resolution, accuracy and reliability, compared to those of previous qualitative methods, and of enhancing the ability to diagnose multiple fault. In this study, the method is applied for the multiple fault diagnosis of the Tennessee Eastman challenge process, which is a realistic industrial process for evaluating process contol and monitoring methods. The process is decomposed using the local qualitative relationships of each measured variable. Dynamic PLS (DPLS) model is built to estimate each measured variable, which is then compared with the estimated value in order to diagnose the fault. Through case studies of 15 single faults and 44 double faults, the proposed method demonstrated a good diagnosis capability compared with previous statistical methods.
