  • This paper presents a reliability-based analysis on seismic performance of timber-steel hybrid shear wall systems. Such system is composed of steel moment resisting frame and infill wood frame shear wall. The performance criteria of the hybrid system with respect to different seismic hazard levels were determined through a damage assessment process, and the effectiveness of the infill wood shear walls on improving the seismic performance of the hybrid systems was evaluated. Performance curves were obtained by considering different target non-exceedance probabilities, and design charts were further established as a function of seismic weight. Wall drift responses and shear forces in wood-steel bolted connections were used as performance criteria in establishing the performance curves to illustrate the proposed design procedure. It was found that the presence of the infill wood shear walls significantly reduced the non-performance probabilities of the hybrid wall systems. This study provides performance-based seismic evaluations on the timber-steel hybrid shear walls in support of future applications of such hybrid systems in multi-story buildings.

  • This paper presents an overview of wind turbine research techniques including the recent application of hybrid testing. Wind turbines are complex structures as they are large, slender, and dynamic with many different operational states, which limits applicable research techniques. Traditionally, numerical simulation is widely used to study turbines while experimental tests are rarer and often face cost and equipment restrictions. Hybrid testing is a relatively new simulation method that combines numerical and experimental techniques to accurately capture unknown or complex behaviour by modelling portions of the structure experimentally while numerically simulating the remainder. This can allow for increased detail, scope, and feasibility in wind turbine tests. Hybrid testing appears to be an effective tool for future wind turbine research, and the few studies that have applied it have shown promising results. This paper presents a literature review of experimental and numerical wind turbine testing, hybrid testing in structural engineering, and hybrid testing of wind turbines. Finally, several applications of hybrid testing for future wind turbine studies are proposed including multi-hazard loading, damped turbines, and turbine failure.

  • FE model-based dynamic analysis has been widely used to predict the dynamic characteristics of civil structures. In a physical point of view, an FE model is unavoidably different from the actual structure as being formulated based on extremely idealized engineering drawings and design data. The conventional model updating methods such as direct method and sensitivity-based parameter estimation are not flexible for model updating of complex and large structures. Thus, it is needed to develop a model updating method applicable to complex structures without restriction. The main objective of this paper is to present the model updating method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) by combining the genetic algorithm as global optimization method and modified Nelder-Mead's Simplex method as local optimization method. This FE model updating method using HGA does not need the derivation of derivative function related to parameters and without application of complicated inverse analysis methods. In order to allow its application on diversified and complex structures, a commercial FEA tool is adopted to exploit previously developed element library and analysis algorithms. Moreover, an output-level objective function making use of measurement and analytical results is also presented to update simultaneously the stiffness and mass of the analysis model. The numerical examples demonstrated that the proposed method based on HGA is effective for the updating of the FE model of bridge structures.

  • In order to evaluate the strength of carbody structures of railway rolling stock made of laminated fiber-reinforced composite materials, total laminate approach was introduced. Structural analyses were conducted to check the basic design of hybrid composite carbody structures of the Korean Tilting Train eXpress(TTX) with the service speed of 180km/h. The mechanical tests were also conducted to obtain strengths of composite laminates. The results show that all stress components of composite carbody structures are inside of failure envelopes and total laminate approach is recommended to predict the failure of hybrid composite carbody structures at the stage of the basic design.

  • The basic systems of spatial structures such as shells, membrane, cable-nets and tensegrity structure have been developed to create the large spaces without column. These structures may have large freedom in scale and form, and especially tensegrity structures are received much attention from the view points of their light weight and aesthetics. But There re some difficulties concerning structural stability, surface formation and construction method. One of the way to solve these problems reasonably is a combination of tensile members and rigid members. A structural system based on this concept is referred to as the "HTS ( Hybrid Tension Structure )". This is a type of flexible structural system which is unstable initially, because the cable material has little initial rigidity. As cable - dome hybrid structures is a type of HTS, the initial stress for the self- equilibrated system having stable state have to be introduced. To determine initial stress having stable state, the shape finding analysis is required before the stress - deformation analysis. In this paper, the primary objective is to derive the nonlinear finite element formula of cable and truss members considering geometric nonlinearity for shape finding of cable-dome, and to propose the method to decide the initial stress by the shape analysis of cable-dome hybrid structure with the self-equilibrated state.

  • In order to determine the most suitable material system which can achieve the lightweight design and fulfill the design requirements of carbody structures of Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX), aluminum carbody, composite carbody, and hybrid carbody combined with aluminum and composite structures were considered in present study. The finite-element analysis was used to verity the design requirements of the TTX carbody structures with the material system being considered in the design stages. The stresses in the carbody structures and deflections of underframe against static load cases were checked as design criteria. The results show that the hybrid carbody structures are beneficial with regard to weight savings and structural integrity when compared to aluminum and composite carbody structures.

  • Many papers which deal with the dynamic instability of shell-like structures under the STEP load has been published but there have been few papers related to the dynamic instability of hybrid cable domes. And also there are a few researches which treat the essential phenomenon of the dynamic buckling using the phase for investigating occurrence of chaos. In this study the indirect buckling of hybrid cable domes considering geometric nonlinearity are investigated numerically and compared it with the static critical load The dynamic critical loads are determined by the numerical integration of the geometric nonlinear equation of motion and the mechanism of the indirect buckling is examined by using the phase curves.

  • In this paper, the hybrid prefabricated retrofit method that improve structural performance and reduce construction period was developed by using a finite element analysis. The hybrid prefabricated retrofit method consist of a Z-shaped side plate, a L-shaped lower plate, and a bottom plate containing an steel plate with openings. This shape has advantage that a retrofit method is possible regardless of the size of the beams and a follow-up process such as reinforcement bars placing are not required. The finite element analysis of hybrid Prefabricated retrofit method showed the most ideal stress distribution when the thickness of bottom plate was 10mm, the thickness of the L-shaped lower plate was 5mm, the thickness of the Z-shaped side plate was 2.5mm, and the bolt spacing was 200mm. The bending strength equation of Hybrid prefabricated retrofit method was proposed through the plastic stress distribution method in KDS 41 31 00. The result of Comparison the proposed equation with the finite element analysis, it is determined that the design of hybrid prefabricated retrofit method is possible through the KDS 41 31 00.

  • This paper presents the flexural behavior of a hybrid Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer(GFRP)-steel decks for use in deteriorated bridge decks replacement. Static load tests were conducted to investigate the structural characteristics of the hybrid FRP-steel deck. The tested deck panel satisfied the design criteria. The failure mode of the hybrid deck was demonstrated ductility with deformation beyond initial yielding. The responses were compared with the ANSYS finite element predictions. It was found that the presented hybrid deck was efficient for use in bridges. The thickness of the hybrid deck may be decreased when compared to that of the all FRP deck with similar flexural rigidity.

  • U-flanged truss beam is composed of u-shaped upper steel flange, lower steel plate of 8mm or more thickness, and connecting lattice bars welded on the upper and lower sides. The hybrid beam with U-flanged steel truss is made in the construction site through pouring the concrete, and designated as U-flanged truss hybrid beam. In this study the structural experiments on the 4 hybrid beams with the proposed basic shapes were performed, and the flexural capacities from the tests were compared with those from the theoretical approach. The failure modes of each specimen were quite similar. The peak load was reached with the ductile behavior after yielding, and the failure occurred through the concrete crushing. The considerable increasement of deformation was observed up to the concrete crushing. The composite action of concrete and steel member was considered to be reliable from the behavior of specimens. The flexural strength of hybrid beam has been evaluated exactly using the calculation method applied in the boubly reinforced concrete beam. The placement of additional rebars in the bottom instead of upper side is proposed for the efficient design of U-flanged truss hybrid beam.
