  • The energy crisis involving depletion of fossil fuel resource is not the sole driving force for developing renewable energy technologies. Another driving force is the ever increasing concerns on the air quality of our planet, associated with the continuous and dramatic increase of the concentration of greenhouse gas (mainly carbon dioxide) emissions. The internal combustion engine is a major source of distributed $CO_2$ emissions caused by combustion of gasoline derived largely from fossil fuel. Another major source of $CO_2$ is the combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity. New technologies for generating electricity from sources that do not emit $CO_2$, such as water, solar, wind, and nuclear, together with the advent of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and even all-electric vehicles (EVs), offer the potential of alleviating our present problem. Therefore, the relevant technologies in $LiFePO_4$ as cathode material for Li-ion batteries suitable to the friendly environment are reviewed aim to provide the vital information about the growing field for energies to minimize the potential environmental risks.

  • Diesel locomotive operates the generator with the power from the diesel engine, and it consists of the typical serial-hybrid system which operates the train wheels by converting its generated electric energy into the torque of DC (or AC) motor. However, the technology of locomotives is only focused on trains' controlling power generation mechanism. Hence, it is a current issue that the efficiency of its engine and its generator is relatively lower than that of auto vehicles'. Particularly, since there are no proper equipment to measure the amount of fuel which is essentially necessary for the efficient use of fuel, it is not easy to confirm the instant amount of fuel use as well as the exact average fuel consumption per an hour. Due to those difficulties, it is urgent to develop the device that measures the fuel consumption. Plus, this use of the developed measuring device allows the various and useful analysis relating to the fuel consumption, and this could lead to establishing the efficient driving pattern regarding to fuel saving. This device consists of two flux (fuel level) measuring censors, MCU for calculating the measured values, the information recorder for saving measured values, and the display device for indicating the fuel amount consumed during driving.

  • Electric vehicles (EV) are developing fast during this decade due to drastic issues on the protection of environment and the shortage of energy sources, so new technologies allow the development of electric vehicles (EV) by means of electric motors associated with static converters. The proposed propulsion system consists of two induction motors (IM) that ensure the drive of the two back driving wheels. The electronic differential system ensures the robust control of the vehicle behavior on the road. It also allows controlling, independently, every driving wheel to turn at different speeds in any curve. This paper presents the study of an hybrid Fuzzy-sliding mode control (SMC) strategy for the electric vehicle driving wheels, stability improvement, in which the fuzzy logic system replace the discontinuous control action of the classical SMC law. Our electric vehicle fuzzy-sliding mode control's simulated in Matlab SIMULINK environment, the results obtained present the efficiency of the proposed control with no overshoot, the rising time is perfected with good disturbances rejections comparing with the classical control law.

  • General solar street light system needs two separate power supply for charging the battery and driving LED Lamp. In this study, one power supply is used for both charging battery and driving LED lamp. In particular, in order to increase the efficiency of the equipment, (maximum power point tracking: MPPT) was applied which is widely adopted in grid-connected solar systems. LED driver embodied using current control routine of charger into Essential constant current system.

  • Generally, brushless DC motor(BLDCM) driving system uses hall sensors or encoders as the mechanical position or speed sensors. It is necessary to achieve the information's of rotor position for driving trapezoidal type brushless DC motor without any position sensor. This paper proposes a sensorless driving system with absolute rotor position detecting circuit which acquires both commutating phase and commutating time by analyzing motor phase voltages. Proposed system is applied to a 10k[W] rating motor which actually used in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The experimental results will show the validity of the proposed system and the practical use of proposed sensorless drive.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. State-of-charge (SOC) estimation is a fundamental issue in vehicle power train control and battery management systems. This study proposes a novel model-based SOC estimation method that applies closed-loop state observer theory and a comprehensive battery model. The state-space model of lithium-ion battery is developed based on a three-order resistor-capacitor equivalent circuit model. The least square algorithm is used to identify model parameters. A multi-state closed-loop state observer is designed to predict the open-circuit voltage (OCV) of a battery based on the battery state-space model. Battery SOC can then be estimated based on the corresponding relationship between battery OCV and SOC. Finally, practical driving tests that use two types of typical driving cycle are performed to verify the proposed SOC estimation method. Test results prove that the proposed estimation method is reasonably accurate and exhibits accuracy in estimating SOC within 2% under different driving cycles.

  • This paper describes the development of a hybrid-powered wheelchair (HPW) for the elderly. The proposed HPW has novel mechanical and control features compared with conventional powered wheelchairs. An ergonomic back-braking mechanism was designed in order to stop the wheels easily. In terms of control features, the HPW remarkably reduces the muscle power required by combining various assistive functions, such as wheel torque assistance, friction/inertia compensation, gravity compensation, and the one-hand driving algorithm. For wheel torque assistance, strain gauges were attached to the hand-rim in order to measure the wheel torque applied by a human. Gyroscopes and an accelerometer were attached to the wheel and chair respectively for friction and inertia compensation. An inclinometer was attached for gravity compensation and the one-hand driving algorithm was included for patients who can only use one hand. The one-hand driving algorithm controls the angular velocity of the uncontrolled wheel by using a gyroscope and pressure sensors attached to the bottom of the seat. Finally, the performance of the proposed motion assisted algorithm was verified through various experiments.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear information filter (IF) for curvilinear motions in an interacting multiple model (IMM) algorithm to track a maneuvering vehicle on a road is investigated. Driving patterns of vehicles on a road are modeled as stochastic hybrid systems. In order to track the maneuvering vehicles, two kinematic models are derived: A constant velocity model for linear motions and a constant-speed turn model for curvilinear motions. For the constant-speed turn model, a nonlinear IF is used in place of the extended Kalman filter in nonlinear systems. The suggested algorithm reduces the root mean squares error for linear motions and rapidly detects possible turning motions.

  • This paper presents a novel scheme to estimate the rotor position of a single-phase hybrid switched reluctance motor (HSRM). The proposed method uses the differential of back-EMF within a position region to estimate rotor position. By detecting the crossing-zero signal of back-EMF differential value, the minimum position of back-EMF corresponding to an absolute rotor position can be captured and used for position estimation four times in every mechanical rotation. In this way, a sensorless operation with adjustable turn on/off angle can be achieved without substantial computation. For the starting, two current comparators are adopted. The experimental verification using a prototype drive system is provided to demonstrate the viability of the proposed sensorless scheme.
