To study the possibility of agricultural utilization of seafood processing wastewater sludges, the changes of temperature and humus, the form of organic matter and nitrogen and the germination ratio of plant during the composting were investigated. The results were summarized as follows. Temperature was rapidly increased at early stage of composting, reached to $67{\sim}76^{\circ}C$ in highest temperature at 3~5 days, and then decreased gradually fallen to $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ at 19 days after composting, at the point was upset firstly. The third upset was conducted at 60days after composting, and then the temperature was little changed. The contents of total organic matters in the compost for composting were down 4.5~8.0%. Ether extractable materials, resins and hemicellulose contents of the organic matters for composting were decreased with 35~77%, 32~69% and 19~30%, respectively. And cellulose, lignins and unknown materials contents in the organic matters for composting were increased a little, but water soluble polysaccharides of organic matters were little changed. Total nitrogen, amino sugar and amino acid nitrogen contents in the compost for composting were decreased with 20~42%, 11~49% and 23~65%, respectively. The contents of humic acid in the compost for composting were little changed, but contents of fulvic acid in the compost for composting were decreased gradually. Germination ratio of radish, chinese cabbage and cucumber were over 90%, when the compost produced at 30 days after composting was tested on plant germination.
A laboratory experiment was conducted in order to learn the effect of a number of organic matters on the ammonification and nitrification of urea, and the reaction of soil, applied to a loamy upland soil poor in orgnic matter(<1.5%, without plants 1.The ammonification of urea was most pronounced in one week period immediatly after fertilizer and water treated, after which a rapid decrease of it was followed showing no accumulation at the end of 3rd week. Owing to the accumlation of ammonium, pHs of treated soils were read 7.0 to 7.3 from 6.8~6.9. 2.Nitrification was also progressed rapidly in the first one week period so that the accumulation of NO$_3$-N surpassed that of ammonia during this period. After the 1st week the accumulation of N0$_3$-N was continuously increased showing the maximum at the end of 4 weeks following a sharp decrease at the end of 5th weeks. The accumulation of NO$_3$-N dropped soil pH from 6.8-7.0 to 6. 0-6.2,but the decrease of NO-N at the end of 5th weeks brought up soil pH to 6.4-6.6. again. 3.Amino acid fermentation byproduct rich in salt, paticularly chloride, slowed down the ammonification and nitrification of urea. 4.The application of organic matter diminished the acidifying effect of chemical fertilizers. The diminishing effect of soluble humic acid and amion acid fermentation byproduct showed greater than that of solid organic matter in this experiment, which might be own to the application of a rather small amount of water soluble organic matters. Rice straw powder among solid organic matters appeared to be the least in the diminishing effect above. It may be reasoned that these soluble organic matters decomposes rapidly so as to affect Soil pH, but solid organic matters, particularly the rice straw powder, form acidic humus.
Dissolved organic matter (DOM), which changes according to various factors, is ubiquitously present from natural environments to engineered treatment systems. Only limited information is available regarding the environmental functions of DOM after bulk analyses are only applied for characterization. In this paper, latest DOM analytical techniques are briefly introduced, which include fluorescence excitation-emission matrix with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), size-exclusion chromatography with an organic carbon detector (SEC-OCD), carbon/nitrogen stable-isotope ratio, and Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectroscopy (FT-ICR-MS). Recent examples of using advanced analyses to interpret the phenomena associated with DOM occurring in natural and engineered systems are presented here. Through EEM-PARAFAC, different components like protein-like, fulvic-like, and humic-like can be identified and tracked individually through the investigated systems. SEC-OCD allows researchers to quantify different size fractions. FT-ICR-MS provides thousands of molecular formulas present in bulk DOM samples. Lastly, carbon/nitrogen stable-isotope ratio offers reasonable tools for tracking the sources in environments. We also discuss the advantages and weakness of the above-mentioned characterizing tools. Specifically, they focus on single environmental factors (different sourced-DOM and interaction of sediment-pore water) or simple changes after individual treatment processes. Through collaboration with the advanced techniques later, they help the researchers to better understand environmental behaviors in aquatic systems and serve as essential tools for addressing various pending problems associated with DOM.
The pot experiment was conducted to compare the effects of BIO-COM (Organic fertilizer made from industrial by-product) with the compost and humic acid on the physico-chemical properties of soils and the yield of paddy rice (CV. Chucheong-byeo). The results obtained were as follows: 1. All the fertilizer treatments, except humic acid, increased rice yield compare to no fertilizer treatment, and Bio-Com was the highest among the fertilizer treatments. 2. Rice yields were increased with increasing BIO-COM only up to 4% but 2% with N.P.K. fertilizers. 3. Rice yield showed highly positive correlation with number of panicle per hill but negative correlation with 1000 grain weight. 4. BIO-COM application induced the noticeable increase of pH, EC, OM, T-N, Av-P, Ex-Ca, Ex-Mg, Ex-Na, and $Av-SiO_2$, contents in the soils after experiments, and there were highly significant positive correlation among them. 5. BIO-COM application was positively affected on plant height, number of tiller, and fresh weight and dry weight of rice plant throughout entire growing stages and these are positively correlated with rice yield. 6. BIO-COM application also induced the increase of chlorophyll, N, P, Ca, and Mg contents in rice plant 7. It is revealed that there were highly positive correlations between rice yields and pH, EC, OM, T-N, Ex-Ca, and Ex-Mg in the soils. 8. It was also shown the highly significant positive correlations between rice yields, and N and P contents in the rice plant at heading stages, respectively.

The treatment efficiency and the degradation characteristics of humic acid were investigated in three processes-GAC adsorption, Ozone alone and Ozone/GAC hybrid process, in which $UV_{254}$, DOC, molecular size distribution and surface change of GAC were evaluated. DOC removal rate in Ozone/GAC hybrid profess(ca. 80%) was higher than the arithmetic sum of Ozone alone(38%) and GAC adsorption(19%). This result approves that the combined Ozone/GAC hybrid process brings synergistic effects on DOC removal from the HA containing water. $UV_{254}$ decrease rate was also at the highest in Ozone/GAC hybrid process from the three processes. It may be interpreted that the granular activated carbon in Ozone/GAC hybrid process acts as not only an adsorbent but also a catalyst for ozonation, and futhermore offers an additional reaction site between adsorbed organic matter and ozone. In the study of molecular sire distribution, there was no significant change of molecular size distribution in the GAC adsorption process during the reaction time of 120 min. In Ozone alone process, the fraction of molecular size over 30 kDa was decreased a little at the beginning and left constant after 10 min. But in Ozone/GAC hybrid process, the molecules size over 30 kDa of HA was significantly decreased from 36.3% to 3.9%. And also the fraction of smaller molecular size below 0.5 kDa was increased from 4.8%(untreated HA) to 12.3%(in Ozone alone) and 40.1%(in Ozone/GAC) respectively at the reaction time of 120 min.

This study was performed to investigate adsorption characteristics of MTBE and Cd depending upon types of clay minerals md their physicochemical properties. The adsorption characteristics were examined by batch adsorption test on various experimental parameters such as adsorption time, ratio of solution to soil, concentration of contaminants, content of organic matter, pH, and zeta potential. The adsorption efficiency of MTBE or Cd for three types of clays decreased in response to the increase of the ratio of solution to soil whereas their adsorbed amounts increased. MTBE was greatly adsorbed in the decreasing order of vermiculite, bentonite, and CTAB-bentonite while Cd was adsorbed in the decreasing order of bentonite, vermiculite, and CTA-bentonite. An equilibrium isotherm for MTBE was well fitted to Freundlich plotting whereas that for Cd was closely corresponded to Langmuir isotherm. The adsorbed amount of MTBE on bentonite and vermiculite showed the maximum at 1% and 5% of humic acid, thereafter diminished while the adsorbed amount of MTBE on CTAB-bentonite increased in proportion to humic acid. Conversely, the adsorbed amount of Cd on the addition of humic acid continued to increase regardless of types of adsorbents. For all types of adsorbents, adsorbed quantity and adsorption efficiency of Cd have been coincidently increased at pH 8 and they were further enhanced at pH 10 showing 90% adsorption efficiency. Upon pH rose, the zeta potential on each adsorbent began to decrease, while increasing Cd concentration led to decline of zeta potential, which in turn ascribed to lowering dispersion stability that could consequently enhance adsorption capability.
Removal of 4-chlorophenol (4CP) by natural manganese dioxide (NMD) catalyzed reaction was investigated in this study. Tests were also carried out to evaluate the effects of pH and natural organic matter (NOM) on the degradative oxidation of 4CP. Experimental results proved that NMD was effective for the removal of 4CP. Extensive kinetic analysis suggests that overall oxidation of 4CP by NMD is second-order reaction, the first-order with respect to 4CP, and the first-order with respect to NMD, respectively. Also, 4CP oxidation rates on the Mn-oxide surfaces were highly dependent upon experimental conditions such as pH, initial concentration of 4CP or NMD, and existence of humic acid. As pH increased above PZC of NMD, the reaction rate of 4CP was decreased, due to the low affinity of 4CP on NMD at high pH. At pH lower than PZC of NMD, reaction rate of 4CP was also decreased. It was considered that humic acid was involved in the oxidative coupling reaction of 4CP by NMD, resulting in the enhanced degradation rate of 4CP. This study proved that natural manganese oxide can be effectively applied for the removal of chlorophenols in aqueous phase.

The Lake Sihwa watershed includes industrial, urban, and rural areas simultaneously. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in spatial-temporal runoff patterns at representative sites having different land use in the watershed of Lake Sihwa. The result of synchronous and 3D-EEMs(3-Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix Spectroscopy) analysis in 4TG (industrial area), fluorescence distribution and variation clearly appeared in the Fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) and Humic-like fluorescence (HLF) regions along with the Protein-like fluorescence (PLF) region. A characteristic that Peak A (HLF) region fluorescence intensity did not decrease and the HLF region of fluorescence intensity and spatial-temporal changes clearly appeared during rainfall in AS (urban area). The results of fluorescence analysis in MS did not show great changes in PLF and FLF while showing that fluorescence intensity changes over time in the Terrestrial-like fluorescence (THLF) region increased greatly. In conclusion, our results showed significant differences in the runoff characteristics of DOM particularly in industrial, urban and rural area, and these differences should be considered for the efficient controlling of DOM in the watershed.
In this study, changes in the composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were investigated using water samples collected at a downstream site of the Namhan River near the Lake Paldang ($N37^{\circ}24^{\prime}05.33^{{\prime}{\prime}}E127^{\circ}32^{\prime}25.01^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) during a heavy rain event from July 23 to July 28, 2008. The DOC concentrations varied from 1.68 to 3.18 mg/L with the maxium value at a peak of the river water level. Each DOC sample was fractionated into three compositions including hydrophilic (Hi), hydrophobic acid (HoA) and hydrophobic neutral (HoN) fractions. The results showed that HoA was most abundant fractions, constituting 47.2~56.5% of DOC. Refractory dissolved organic carbon (R-DOC) contents were also determined by measuring the DOC concentration after 28-day dark incubation of the samples. R-DOC content was in the range from 83 to 99% of DOC and it was significantly correlated with HoA contents (r = 0.91, p<0.005), while it did not exhibit such a good correlation with the fractions of Hi and HoN (p>0.02). Our results suggest that the HoA, which is associated with humic substances, may be a major composition of refractory organic matters in rivers during storm events.
Miscible displacement techniques were used to investigate the influence of the organic matter treatment on the mobility of Cd, Zn, and Cu through soil columns. The heavy metals moved most readily through the Bonryang soil (Typic Udifluvents) of relatively low in CEC, pH, and organic matter content. Most parts of Cd and Zn eluted within 7 pore volumes, but Cu eluted between 5 and 15 pore volumes. Although the Gangseo soil (Aquatic Eutrochrepts) had lower in CEC and organic matter content than the Gyorae soil (Typic Distrandepts), the heavy metals moved faster through the Gyorae soil than through the Gangseo soil. Cu eluted more slowly and in smaller quantities than Cd and Zn from the Bonryang soil, but did not eluted from the Gangseo and the Gyorae soils at all during the experimental period. The motility of the heavy metals from the Bonryang and the Gangseo soils was in the order of Cd>Zn>Cu, but that of the Gyorae soil was in the order of Zn>Cd>Cu. Cd and Zn eluted after 5 and 20 pore volumes respectively, from the Bonryang soil treated with 3% compost but Cu did not elute even after 30 pore volumes were collected. By 7% compost treatment only small amountssof Cd eluted after 20 pore volumes. The liming of the Bonryang soil retarded the mobility of Cd, Zn, and Cu. Humic acid treatment did not reduce the motility of the Cd and Zn to the extent observed in the Bonryang soil with compost, but reduced a little motility of Cu.
