Energy consumption has been increased world widely, and the energy retain is one of the most important economic alternatives. These tendencies expand the nuclear power plants not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. Despite of the increasing construction of nuclear power plants and related facilities, every system in main control room(MCR) has been designed and administered solely based on the safety-first principles because of the specificity of nuclear industry. However, recent main control rooms started with the concept that the operators' performance could be optimized though the organic interrelation between human, machine, and environments. Now, it has been recognised in the scope of Ergonomics and Space Design which acknowledge our living spaces as Man-Environment Interface and this change connotes the MCR spaces should be special spaces rather than ordinary spaces. This research investigated domestic and foreign nuclear power plants' MCRs to suggest basic alternatives which can be applied to future MCR. With the review of characteristics of MCR, an integration of interior design, lighting and Ergonomics was explored and classified as types. Futhermore, the classification of environmental characteristics within the relationships between human, machine, and environments was developed through the case analysis of nuclear power plants. The results of this study will provide a basis of space design for system environments that the high level of safety and function are extremely important.
Present computing power and enhanced technology is progressing at a dramatic rate. These systems can unravel complex issues, assess and control processes, learn, and-in many cases-fully automate production. There is no doubt that technological advancement is improving many aspects of life, changing the landscape of virtually all industries and enhancing production beyond what was thought possible. However, the human is still a part of these systems. Consequently, as the advancement of systems transpires, the role of humans within those systems will unavoidably continue to adapt as well. Due to the human tendency for error, this technological advancement should compel a persistent emphasis on human error reduction as part of maximizing system efficiency and safety-especially in the context of the nuclear industry. Within this context, as new systems are designed and the role of the human is transformed, human error should be targeted for a significant decrease relative to predecessor systems and an equivalent increase in system stability and safety. This article contends that optimizing the roles of humans and machines in the design and implementation of new types of automation in nuclear facility systems should involve human error reduction without ignoring the essential importance of human interaction within those systems.
In an intelligent man-machine interface, it is very effective to support human thinking and to be in communication in some intuitive fashion. For this, sharing experience between the party concerned, human operators(s) and the interface is essential. It is also necessary to keep mutual understanding in some conceptual levels. Here in the present paper, figures which are an aspect of concepts and form a basis of mental image are discussed.

In the era of ubiquitous computing, human-friendly man-machine interface is getting more attention due to its possibility to offer convenient services. For this, in this paper, we introduce a 'Half-Mirror Interface System (HMIS)' as a novel type of human-friendly man-machine interfaces. Basically, HMIS consists of half-mirror, USB-Webcam, microphone, 2ch-speaker, and high-speed processing unit. In our HMIS, two principal operation modes are selected by the existence of the user in front of it. The first one, 'mirror-mode', is activated when the user's face is detected via USB-Webcam. In this mode, HMIS provides three basic functions such as 1) make-up assistance by magnifying an interested facial component and TTS (Text-To-Speech) guide for appropriate make-up, 2) Daily weather information provider via WWW service, 3) Health monitoring/diagnosis service using Chinese medicine knowledge. The second one, 'display-mode' is designed to show decorative pictures, family photos, art paintings and so on. This mode is activated when the user's face is not detected for a time being. In display-mode, we also added a 'healing-window' function and 'healing-music player' function for user's psychological comfort and/or relaxation. All these functions are accessible by commercially available voice synthesis/recognition package.

DYLAM and its related applications are reviewed in detail and found to have many favorable characteristics. Concerning human factor analysis, the study demonstrates that DYLAM methodology represents an appropriate tool to study man-machine behavior provided that DYLAM is used to model machine behavior and an appropriate operator interface human factor model is included. A hybrid model which is a synthesis of the DYLAM model, a system thermodynamic simulation model and a neural network predicative model, is implemented and used to analyze dynamically the CANDU pressurizer system.

In this paper, methods of human figure representation in computer graphics are described. Many applications of the human figure representation are found in areas including industry, advertisement, and cartoon production and further research for the methods that show the human figure more realistically is ex- pected. Two analytic methods for human model, kinematics and dynamics, are ex- plained and the characteristics of the man-machine interface systems that include human figure representation are presented. Various techniques of the human figure representation based on kinematics or(and) dynamics are discussed and representation methods of human body segments such as hand, face, spine are introduced in this paper.
The main control room (MCR) of a nuclear power plant plays an important role in the operation of the plant. Since the traditional man-machine interface of the current MCR is old-fashioned, a next-generation MCR, that provides a VDT-based human-computer interface is being designed. This paper aims to provide a systematic and efficient method for converting a traditional man-machine interface of the MCR into a VDT-based one. Procedures and analysis methods are presented for efficient and effective development.

We propose a brain-machine interface(BMI) based human-robot interaction(HRI) platform which operates machines by interfacing intentions by capturing brain waves. Platform consists of capture, processing/mapping, and action parts. A noninvasive brain wave sensor, PC, and robot-avatar/LED/motor are selected as capture, processing/mapping, and action part(s), respectively. Various investigations to ensure the relations between intentions and brainwave sensing have been explored. Case studies-an interactive game, on-off controls of LED(s), and motor control(s) are presented to show the design and implementation process of new BMI based HRI platform.
