A Human Sensibility Evaluation and Biofeedback Technology using PPG (PPG를 이용한 감성평가 및 바이오피드백 기술)

  • This study describes a system for human sensibility evaluation using PPG(photoplethysmogram) signal and biofeedback algorithm to respond the bad(negative) mood. For this objective, PPG signals for two emotional states(positive/negative) are collected. To evoke the test emotions, happy(or joyful) and sad(or irritating) movie files are collected and played in subjects' monitor. From the acquired PPG signal, the heart rate variability(HRV) is calculated. Using the HRV and its FFT spectra, the human sensibility is evaluated. Since the heart is a representative organ which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system(ANS), the ANS may reflect the changes in emotion. The biofeedback algorithm is designed with motion image player interacting with the results of the sensibility evaluation. It was shown that HRV was changed according to the subject's emotions. Accordingly, the sensibility evaluation test showed feasibility of the our method.

  • A vertical skin model with two detachable environmental chambers was developed to simulate a Human-Clothing-Environment system and to evaluate heat and moisture transport properties of textile materials under severe conditions and during transient states. The construction of the system was described and data reproducibility and accuracy of the instrument were verified by using PEG treated nonwovens. Also advantages over a traditional static type experiment were demonstrated based on a series of experiments.

  • This paper describes a technique for human sensibility evaluation using 10-channel EEG(electroencephalogram). The proposed method uses the linear predictor coefficients as EEG feature parameters and a neural network as sensibility pattern classifier. For subject independent system, multiple templates are stored and the most similar template can be selected. EEG signals corresponding to 4 emotions such as, relaxation, joy, sadness and anger are collected from 5 armature performers. The states of relaxation and joy are considered as positive sensibility and those of sadness and anger as negative. The classification performance using the proposed method is about 72.6%. This will be promising performance in the human sensibility evaluation.

Methodological Challenges of Empirical Studies on Government-Nonprofit Service Delivery: Toward a Dynamic Approach

  • Empirical studies have shown that government and human service nonprofit organizations have maintained active partnerships to deliver human services for the past several decades. However, the previous researches on resource dependent government-nonprofit service delivery have revealed serious methodological limitations to adequately demonstrate the dynamic relationship between both sectors over time. Since the dynamics underlying the government-nonprofit service delivery is a complex process, in which multiple factors dynamically interact over time, the assumptions of system dynamics can help improve these methodological drawbacks. This study aims to explore methodological issues and weaknesses observed in empirical studies on resource dependent government-nonprofit service delivery in the United States, and further attempts to provide insights on future research toward a dynamic approach, bringing the assumptions of system dynamics to the challenges of the previous researches.

  • Human driver monitoring system is one of the most important systems for the safety in driving vehicles, and therefore driver assistance system has gained much attention during the last decade. This paper proposed an intelligent driver assistance system which monitors human driver's states from bio-signals such as ECG and Blood Pressure. The proposed system used mamdani fuzzy inference to evaluate the driver's mental strain and generated warning signals to the driver. The approach using bio-signals in driver assistance system is the main issue of the related systems and the preliminary results showed the possibility of further research topics in developing more intelligent embedded systems with bio-signal feedback.

Paternal Involvement within Contexts: Ecological Examination of Korean Fathers in Korea and in the U.S.

  • Based on concepts of human ecology, this study explored how diverse systems- cultural setting, work context and maternal perception- shape paternal involvement in child care. For this purpose, I compared Korean fathers (n=93) and Korean sojourner fathers in the United States (n=129). Hypothesized structural equation model explaining direct and indirect relationships among variables was developed. The results showed that cultural context had no direct relationship with paternal involvement. Cultural context showed indirect influence on paternal involvement through fathers' work context. Maternal perception, which had significant relationship with paternal involvement, was not explained by cultural context. However, it was significantly influenced by work context.

Status and Implications of Policies on Intelligent Robotics in Major Countries (주요국의 지능로봇 정책 추진 현황과 시사점)

  • As artificial intelligence advances, major countries are actively promoting the use of intelligent robots to improve industrial productivity and enhance the quality of life. As robots become more capable of interacting with humans, they are being increasingly integrated into the human realm. Accordingly, major countries are actively implementing policies to lead intelligent robot technology and secure market leadership. We examine the status of policies related to intelligent robots in five countries: United States, China, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. These countries apply 1) government-led intelligent robot policies, 2) investments to secure core robot technologies and promote the convergence of artificial intelligence and robots, 3) programs for research and development on intelligent robots, 4) strengthened human-centered human-robot interaction and collaboration, and 5) ethics, stability, and reliability in the development and use of robot technologies. For Korea to compete with major countries and promote the intelligent robot industry, high-risk, high-performance innovation projects should be prioritized.

Intelligent Soft Driving System for an Electric Four-wheeled Vehicle Eluding Dynamic Obstacles

  • There are electric four-wheeled vehicles to assist elder people. Because of the vehicles'dynamic characteristic such as impossible to move abeam, it is difficult for these people who has little experience and has little knowledge to drive. Also to judge the future state of dynamic obstacles and to decide how to elude them safely are more difficult. We installed the predictive fuzzy controller(evaluates the future states which several kinds of operation candidates were done and chooses the best one) that modeled humans'algorithms in the system. Human predicts the future states of dynamic obstacles and chooses an operation(wait, steer, go back, etc) to elude safely. To elude dynamic obstacles flexibly, we added expert's knowledge for safe driving to this controller. In this paper, we propose the intelligent soft driving system by the controller that can elude dynamic obstacles safely, and we confirm the effectiveness by a simulation.

A Diagnoses on the Actual Management States of Small Family Businesses (소규모 가족기업의 경영실태진단)

  • This study examines the real states of family businesses through the interview to the owners and their family members of 15 family businesses. Contents of the interview are starting process, goal and long-run plan, marketing, human resource management and financial management. Many owners usually start their business because of unemployment or shortage of job opportunity. So they dont have an business experience or management skill. And owners act passively in sales because they think the sales area is restricted and their stores are well-known. Family members, especially housewives, suffer role conflict and dissatisfaction because there are no rules on wage and responsibility. And many owners use the resource of household to business and vice versa. This is an advantage of family business in the viewpoint of effective use of resource, but it is a confusion of resources in the viewpoint of financial management.

Performance-based remaining life assessment of reinforced concrete bridge girders

  • Performance-based remaining life assessment of reinforced concrete bridge girders, subject to chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement, is addressed in this paper. Towards this, a methodology that takes into consideration the human judgmental aspects in expert decision making regarding condition state assessment is proposed. The condition of the bridge girder is specified by the assignment of a condition state from a set of predefined condition states, considering both serviceability- and ultimate- limit states, and, the performance of the bridge girder is described using performability measure. A non-homogeneous Markov chain is used for modelling the stochastic evolution of condition state of the bridge girder with time. The thinking process of the expert in condition state assessment is modelled within a probabilistic framework using Brunswikian theory and probabilistic mental models. The remaining life is determined as the time over which the performance of the girder is above the required performance level. The usefulness of the methodology is illustrated through the remaining life assessment of a reinforced concrete T-beam bridge girder.
