  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of hydrophilic polymer (HP) mixture ratio (Control, 1.0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, and 10.0%) on growth of eggplant (Solanum melongena) for lower maintenance urban agriculture via green roofs. Although it was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), substrate temperature was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio were increased. High substrate water content (95%) was found consistently in growing media under elevated hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio at over 5% during the entire growing period. Substrate electronic conductivity was increased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio were increased. Growth index was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. It was reduced about 1/3 and 1/5 compared to that of Control in HP5.0 and HP10.0 treatment plants, respectively. Number of leaves, leaf length, and leaf width were decreased in following order: Control> HP1.0> HP2.5> HP5.0> HP10.0 treatments. There numbers were significantly lower in HP5.0 and HP10.0 treatment plants. Dry weight of shoot and root were decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. They were reduced by 1/4 compared to those of Control treatment plants. In addition, visual value was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. Plants grown in HP1.0, HP2.5, and HP5.0 treatments all survived. However, plants grown in the HP10.0 treatment had the lowest survival rate (56%) after 3 months of growing. These results indicate that the advantage of adding hydrophilic polymer to green roof growing media may greater during dry periods. However, the proper mixture proportion of hydrophilic polymer should be determined according to different characteristics of growing media and plant species.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth whitening and properties of an enamel surface after treatments with tooth bleaching agents that contained dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and hydrogen peroxide (HP). Thirty specimens were obtained from fifteen premolar and were randomly divided into three groups (n=10): 1, 3.5% HP + 0 g DCPD; 2, 3.5% HP + 0.1 g DCPD; 3. 3.5% HP + 1 g DCPD. All groups were bleached 8 hours per day for 14 days. With increasing DCPD concentration, the pH values in the agents increased, making it less acidic. However, there was no statistically significant difference (p>.05). As the concentration of DCPD was increased, the concentration of Ca and P was also increased. In all groups, after the tooth whitening, the tooth color was found to have a value of $L^*$ (p<.05). All groups showed significantly decreased enamel microhardness compared to their baseline (p<.05). The percentage microhardness loss (PML) of the group A1 and A2 were significantly lower than that of group A3. The obvious variation of morphology was observed on enamel surfaces in group A1. Following an analysis of the constituents of enamel surface after bleaching, as DCPD content was increased, the amount of Ca and P was increased. In this study, the experimental results suggest that DCPD/HP agent less demineralization changes such as the erosion morphology and hardness loss without compromising whitening efficiency.

  • Cellulose acetate (CA) fiber mats containing inclusion complexes of asiaticoside (AC) in 2-hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin ($HP{\beta}CD$) for potential usage as wound dressings were developed. The AC/$HP{\beta}CD$ complex-loaded CA fibers at various $HP{\beta}CD$ to AC molar ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were prepared in 90:10 v/v mixture of 80% (v/v) acetic acid and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) via electrospinning. The maximum released amounts of AC depended on the $HP{\beta}CD$ content and were much greater than those released from the AC-loaded CA fiber mat. In the in vitro study, indirect cytotoxic evaluation with human dermal fibroblasts (HDFa) showed that these materials released no substances in the levels that were harmful to the cells and the cells appeared to attach and proliferate well on these substrates. However, only the CA fiber mats containing AC/$HP{\beta}CD$ complexes at the $HP{\beta}CD$ to AC molar ratio of 0.5 was effective in upregulating the production of collagen of the cultured cells.

  • This study is a prior research to manufacture a thermoplastic mask, which is a fixture used in radiation therapy, by 3D printing. It proceeded to analyze the filament material that can replace the thermoplastic. Among the commercially available filament materials, a material having similar characteristics to that of a thermoplastic mask was selected and the radiation dose was compared and analyzed. The experiment used Monte Carlo simulation. The shape in which the mask fixed the head was simulated for the ICRU sphere. The photon fluence was calculated at the skin Hp (0.07), the lens Hp (3), and the whole body Hp (10) by applying a thermoplastic plastic material and a filament material. As a result, when looking at the relative dose based on the thermoplastic plastic material, the difference was approximated within 4%. The material showing the most similar dose was PA-nylon. In selecting an appropriate filament material, it should be selected by comprehensively considering various conditions such as economical efficiency and radiation effects. It is thought that the results of this study can be used as basic data.

  • Genetic polymorphism of transferrin $(T_f)$ subtypes in Jeju population was studied by isoelectric focusing of human sera on polyacrylamide gels under high voltage, and haptolobin (Hp) polymorphism in Seoul and Jeju population was studied by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Among 946 normal samples, three common types of transferrin, $T_{f}C_{1}, T_{f}C_{1}-C_{2} and T_{f}C_{2}$ were observed with some variants migrating slower than $T_{f}C$ subtypes, while among 139 patient (hepatitis) samples, only three common types were found. The gene frequencies were calculated as follows; in normal population, $T_{f}C^{1}$ was 0.7220; $T_{f}C^{2}, 0.2743; T_{f}D^{Jeju}, 0.0037$, and in patient population, $T_{f}C^{1} was 0.7194; T_{f}C^{2}, 0.2806$ respectively. Among 460 samples in Seoul and 502 in Jeju population, three types of haptoglobin, Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1 and Hp 2-2 were observed. The gene frequency of $Hp^1$ was 0.304, $Hp^2$, 0.696 in Seoul and in Jeju, $Hp^1$ was 0.269 and $Hp^2$, 0.731, respectively. The frequencies of the genes and the polymorphic phenotypes were discussed comparatively with the other populations.

  • In order to reduce the increased hardness of beef bulgogi due to hydrostatic pressure (HP), kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) was applied. To understand the changes of shear force in beef bulgogi with kiwifruit induced by HP, changes in chemical properties of myofibril (Mf) with 10% kiwifruit induced by HP were investigated. From the SDS-PAGE patterns of Mf with 10% kiwifruit, there was an observed increase in the degradation of myosin heavy chain (MHC) by HP (300-500 MPa) to that by 0.1 MPa. This result indicates that HP may enhance enzyme action from a kiwifruit for the degradation of MHC, and the similar phenomenon occurred in the beef bulgogi with kiwifruit induced by HP. The shear force of beef bulgogi without a kiwifruit induced by 400 and 500 MPa significantly increased compared to that by 0.1 MPa (p<0.05). However, in the beef bulgogi with 10% or 20% kiwifruit, the shear force induced by 400 or 500 MPa was similar or slightly lower than that by 0.1 MPa. Consequently, adding kiwifruit to bulgogi could reduce the hardness of HP-induced beef bulgogi due to the enzyme action in the kiwifruit accelerated by HP.

  • Three experiments were performed to test the assumption that imbalanced dietary amino acid mixtures must lead to increased heat production (HP). The first experiment was based on diets formulated to have a wide range of crude protein (CP) concentrations but a fixed concentration of lysine, formulated to be the first-limiting amino acid. In the second (converse) experiment, lysine concentration was varied over a wide range while CP content was kept constant. To prevent the masking of dietary effects by thermoregulatory demands, the third experiment was performed at 30 $^{\circ}C$ with the diets similar to the diets used in the second experiment. The detailed relationships among amino acid balance, nitrogen (N) metabolism and energy (E) metabolism were investigated in a computer-controlled chamber calorimetry system. The results of experiments were compared with the predictions of a computerised simulation model of E metabolism. In experiment 1. with constant lysine and varying CP, there was a 75 % increase in N intake as CP concentration increased. This led to a 150 % increase in N excretion. with no significant change in HP. Simulated HP agreed with the empirically determined results in not showing a trend with dietary CP. In experiment 2, with varying lysine but constant CP, there was a 3-fold difference in daily weight gain between the lowest and highest lysine diets. HP per bird increased significantly with dietary lysine concentration. There was still an effect when HP was adjusted for body weight differences, but it failed to maintain statistical significance. Simulated HP results agreed in showing little effect of varying lysine concentration and growth rate on HP. Based on the results of these two experiments, the third experiment was designed to test the response of birds to dietary lysine in high ambient temperature. In experiment 3 which performed at high ambient temperature (30 $^{\circ}C$), HP per bird increased significantly with dietary lysine content, whether or not adjusted for body-weight. The trend was greater than in the previous experiment (20 $^{\circ}C$).
