Objectives: The purpose of this study is to critically review the recent discourse on single-person households (SPH) that appeared in Korean newspapers. Specifically, we analyzed articles in five major daily newspapers, which are representative of the media in Korean society, and examined the types of titles, subjects, and contents of articles in which SPH were mentioned. Method: For this purpose, 538 articles on SPH or "living alone" that appeared in the five major Korean newspapers during 2011-2017 were analyzed using content analysis methods. Results: Our analysis revealed eight major topics(living arrangement and household characteristics; financial instruments; food, clothing, and housing culture; policy; welfare; relationships; safety; values and attitudes). The results show that there is a surge of articles portraying neutral images of SPH in Korean newspapers, thereby emphasizing the recent growth in the number of SPH and the information relating to this population group. Although negative images of SPH continue to exist in the discourse, in recent times we found these attitudes to have become less prevalent compared to neutral images or even positive discourse. We also found that the discourse on these topics and arguments can be divided into four themes-the diversity of SPHs, the solo economy for single households, safety issues, and social relationships. Conclusions: Theoretical and policy implications on family studies relating to SPH are discussed.
Background: This study was conducted to provide background information for the proper management of radon contamination in apartments using mechanical ventilation facilities in residential environments. Objectives: To this end, this study compared and evaluated changes in radon concentrations based on different operating intensities of mechanical ventilation with or without natural ventilation. Methods: For the continuous measurement of radon concentrations, an RAD7 instrument was installed in four apartments equipped with a ventilation system. The measurements were done for comparison of ventilation types and different ventilation intensities ("high", "middle", "low"). Results: The results confirmed that both mechanical and natural ventilation sufficiently reduced the radon concentration in the apartments. In particular, mechanical ventilation at "high" intensity was the most effective. Natural ventilation combined with mechanical ventilation and then natural ventilation alone were the second and the third most effective, respectively. Conclusions: When using ventilation to reduce indoor radon concentrations, it is most effective to operate mechanical ventilation ("high") or natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation at the same time. In cases where mechanical ventilation is available alone, it is recommended to operate it at a minimum of "middle" intensity.
With the recent spread of the concept of Smart Cities which is to solve urban problems with ICT technology, Living Lab, which identifies the demands of citizens who dwell in the city and verifies the acceptability of the services being introduced, has become an important topic. Living Lab is an open innovation platform introduced in consideration of the user's perspective in real life and is a new approach in that service developers use collective intelligence in the process of Co-creation with users. Living Lab is operated on topics which is close to citizens' daily lives such as energy, housing, transportation, and education. In particular, as energy and environmental-focused Living Lab emerges in accordance with the 'Korean New Deal Policy', interest and importance in the field are increasing. The paper derives the characteristics of water resource Living Lab through case analysis of several Living Lab practices. Water resource Living Lab in Daejeon and Chuncheon, which are located in Korea, and water resource Living Lab in Romania and Indonesia are covered in this paper as the reference. The paper finally analyzes the case of Sambang Water Living Lab in Gimhae, which is the city located in southern part of Korea. As a result of case analysis, the urban water resource Living Lab focuses on the raw water of urban water resource and should respond sensitively to the safety of citizens. And for the success of this urban water resource Living Lab, it is essential to ensure that citizens participating in the Living Lab clearly understand the concept of water resources, and citizens' opinions to be implemented as services.

The extinction crisis of local cities, caused by a population density increase phenomenon in capital regions, directly causes the increase of vacant houses in local cities. According to population and housing census, Gunsan-si has continuously shown increasing trend of vacant houses during 2015 to 2019. In particular, since Gunsan-si is the city which suffers from doughnut effect and industrial decline, problems regrading to vacant house seems to exacerbate. This study aims to provide a foundation of a system which can predict and deal with the building that has high risk of becoming vacant house through implementing a data driven vacant house prediction machine learning model. Methodologically, this study analyzes three types of machine learning model by differing the data components. First model is trained based on building register, individual declared land value, house price and socioeconomic data and second model is trained with the same data as first model but with additional POI(Point of Interest) data. Finally, third model is trained with same data as the second model but with excluding water usage and electricity usage data. As a result, second model shows the best performance based on F1-score. Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Machine, XGBoost and LightGBM which are tree ensemble series, show the best performance as a whole. Additionally, the complexity of the model can be reduced through eliminating independent variables that have correlation coefficient between the variables and vacant house status lower than the 0.1 based on absolute value. Finally, this study suggests XGBoost and LightGBM based machine learning model, which can handle missing values, as final vacant house prediction model.

In this study, factors affecting the efficacy of EV charging infrastructure improvement were investigated for EV users on Jeju Island. This study analyzed satisfaction with the EV charging infrastructure and demographic factors that affect the efficacy of EV charging infrastructure improvement. Factors found to affect the efficacy of EV charging infrastructure improvement include a sufficient number of charger installations, the speed in using EV chargers, the ease of obtaining additional information about charging, and fast customer service for faulty chargers. It was also confirmed that demographic factors such as user's housing types had a significant effect. This study contributes to verifying user satisfaction with the construction of EV charging infrastructure throughout Jeju Island.

As human life and welfare become more valued in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, the role and mission of human ecology are expanding. Therefore, a career exploration and education program for high school students covering all the academic fields of human ecology may be necessary. To investigate what would be needed to develop such a program, a focus group interview (FGI) targeting experts within the same field and a survey targeting high school students were conducted. As a result of the FGI, a total of 3 categories and 7 subcategories were identified. The three categories included "human ecology and high school education," "human ecology and career choices," and "education program development and management in human ecology." The results of the high schoolers' survey showed that they had a moderate level of awareness about careers related to human ecology majors, but their interests and known information about human ecology programs in universities were low. Within the sub-content of each major, the contents with the highest educational needs were fashion product management, nutrition by disease, housing market analysis, personal financial management, and children's rights and welfare. If a career exploration and education program is implemented in the future, the most preferred type is a mentoring program by professors, students, and graduates in the field of human ecology. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop and implement an integrative education program about human ecology majors based on the educational needs of high school students.

This paper theoretically explores the calculation of development impact fees focusing on urban growth, new urban development, developer, urban planner, housing, real estate market, community planning, community financing, local government, land use planning, public facilities, and development cost. Many questions related to who bears the burden of paying impact fees beg for answers based on empirical analysis. Those questions involve the extent to which landowners bear the burden, the effect of different levels of impact fees on the socioeconomic mix of communities, the distribution of fiscal benefits within a region where urban communities assess different levels of impact fees, and the preparedness of urban communities to accommodate development displaced by impact fees. Broader questions also relate to how urban and regional form is affected by differential application of impact fees throughout an area and whether money gained from the impact fees makes regional growth more or less efficient. Who ultimately pays development impact fees? There has been little empirical evaluation of how the market responds to development impact fees, but there is considerable information to suggest that, on the whole, the occupants - residents and users - pay the majority of the development impact fees.

The use of social media to disseminate news and interact with project stakeholders is increasing over time in the construction industry. Such social media data can be analyzed to get useful insights of the industry such as demands of new housing construction and satisfaction of construction workers. However, there has been a limited attempts to analyze social media data related to the construction industry. The objective of this study is to collect and analyze construction related tweets to understand the overall sentiments of individuals and organizations about the construction industry. The study collected 87,244 tweets from April 6, 2020, to April 13, 2020, which had hashtags relevant to the construction industry. The tweets were then analyzed to evaluate its sentiments polarity (positive or negative) and sentiment intensity or scores (-1 to +1). Descriptive statistics were produced for the tweets and the sentiment scores were visualized in a scatterplot to show the trend of the sentiment scores over time. The results shows that the overall sentiment score of all the tweets was slightly positive (0.0365). Negative tweets were retweeted and marked as favorite by more users on average than the positive ones. More specifically, the tweets with negative sentiments were retweeted by 2,802 users on average compared to the tweets with positive sentiments (247 average retweet count). This study can potentially be expanded in the future to produce a real time indicator of the construction market industry such as the increased availability of construction jobs, improved wage rates, and recession.

In traffic management, gaps in understanding traffic conditions continue to exist. While the self-belonging problem indicator develops relative to speed, belonging, and self-based relative inclination, it does not apply elimination criteria that may indicate situations that contrast with attribute-specific problems. In this study, we develop integrated indicators that specify communication situations and safety levels for modeling. We review indicators of changes in traffic conditions and raise safety issues, reviewing the indicators so that ITS data can be applied, analyzing the relationships between indicators through factor analysis. We develop combined, integrated indicators that can show changes and stability in traffic situations and that can be applied in traffic information centers to contribute to the development of a traffic environment that can monitor related traffic conditions.
