  • Mechanical properties of $Al_2O_3$ based composite ceramics reinforced by SiC whiskers up to 40% by volume we-re investigated. Specimens were hot pressed at $1, 500^{\circ}C$ under 28.5MPa for 30min in Ar atmosphere. Porosities room temperaturefracture toughnesses and flexural strengths up $1, 000^{\circ}C$ were measured. Porosities were increa-sed as the SiC whisker cortent increased. After compensating the effect of porosities that means extrapolated in zero porosities the reinforced composites exhibited increases in flexural strength and fracture toughness as the whi-sker content increased, .

  • The influence of cyclic loading history on the creep behavior of the 30 vol% hot-pressed $SiC_f/Si_3N_4copmposite was experimentally investigated at $1200^{\circ}C$. The duration of loading/unloading had great effects on the creep behaviors. The short term duration cyclic loading history test results showed significant reduction in the primary and steady-state creep rates. For example, 300sec loading/300sec unloading history resulted in 70% lower steady-state creep rate than that of the continuous loading. However the long term duration cyclic loading history test results showed little change in creep rates compared to those of the continuous one. The reason for the significant change in the short term duration cycles was estimated due to the change in the stress redistribution between the fiber and matrix during the creep recovery in the primary stage.

  • For the senses of beauty and texture, internal components of small passenger cars are manufactured by texturing plastic with drawplate but those of deluxe passenger cars are manufactured by bonding pre-embossed skin to the surface of drawplate. As the pre-embossed skin is bonded at high temperature and pressure, the pattern of skin is distorted. The corner part is hardened and its dimension tolerance is changed by resulting in the increase with its defective rate. This study provides the method to design and manufacture the door trim track by vacuuming the non-patterned skin to upper-side drawplate which forms the pattern of descending skin. It is pressed to the plastic product with hot-press method and the damage of bossed-pattern is prevented. Valuation in this study has been done by analyzing, designing and experimenting method.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of P/M 6061 Al alloy subjected to equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) were investigated. The P/M 6061 Al alloy had an intial grain size of approximately $20\mutextrm{m}$. An equiaxed ultra-fine grained structure with the mean grain size of $~50 \mutextrm{m}$ was obtained by four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The microhardness of P/M 6061 Al alloy was drastically increased from about 40 Hv to 80 Hv by two repetitive ECAP at 373 K. However, the microhardness decreased with increasing ECAP temperature. The tensile stength of as-hot-pressed P/M 6061 Al alloy before ECAP was 95 MPa, whereas it increased to both 248 MPa after two repetitive ECAP at 373 K and 130 MPa after four repetitive ECAP at 473 K. The tensile properties of the ECAPed sample were compared with those of commercial cast 6061-O and 6061-T4 Al alloys.

  • Friction and wear behavior of hot isostatic pressed $Al_2O_3-TiC$ was experimentally examined. Pin-on-disk type friction and wear apparatus was designed and manufactured for the experiment. The experiments were conducted under unlubricated sliding motion in both low and high humidity for three kinds of sliding speed. $Al_2O_3-TiC$ and bearing steel were used as counterface materials. Friction coefficient, wear rate, and surface roughness were measured. Wear surface and wear debris were observed through optical microscope and SEM and analyzed by EDAX. The results showed that the counterface materials, the sliding speed, and the moisture at the sliding surface have significant influence on the friction coefficient and wear rate of $Al_2O_3-TiC$.

  • Acoustic microscopy has attracted much intrest recently as potential mondestructive evalution technique for detecting and sizing defects of surface and sub-surface. Also acoustic emission testing method has been developed for detecting microcracks which is more than 30 umm in length quintitatively on ceramics material. In the present paper, acoustic emission during the four point bending test in hot-pressed sintered Si$\_$3/N$\_$4/ specimen which was stressed bythermal shock has been measured by high sensitive sensing system. The surface and sub-surface cracks were detected by scanning acoustic microscope of 800 MHz and conventional ultrasonic testing in C-scope image. The purpose was to investigate the location and size of cracks by SAM and AE technique, whose experimental datas demontrates good agreement for detecting microcracks.

  • Silicon carbide powder was prepared from mixtures of Sangdong silica sand and carbon black by SHS (Self propagating High temperature Synthesis) method which utilizes magnesiothermic reduction of silica. In the powder preparation process, the reacted powder was leached by chloric acid to remove the magnesium oxide and was subsequently roasted to remove free carbon. The impurities were mostly eliminated by hot acid treatment. The resultant SiC powder showed the mean particle size of 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the specific surface area of $66.55 m^2/g$. The SiC powder was mixed with 1 wt% of boron and of carbon to increase densification rate. The mixed powder was pressed and sintered pressurelessly at $2100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in argon gas. The sintered body showed the hardness of $2550 kg{\cdot}f/mm^2$ and the fracture toughness, KIC of $3.47 MN/m^{3/2}$.

  • Optically translucent Sialon ceramics was fabricated by hot pressed sintering method. The Sialon ceramics was laser textured and their tribological performance was observed. Starved lubrication method was applied on Sialon ceramics with different dimple spacing under a load of 10N and at room temperature. The material having high dimple spacing ($200{\mu}m$) shows low coefficient of friction. The material shows mild wear and therefore, wear rate of steel ball (meeting partner) was observed to measure wear rate. Different phases Sialon ceramics were analyzed by XRD patterns. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the Sialon ceramics were observed.

  • R-curve, of three kinds of silicon nitride-based ceramics were measured, using single edge notched beam (SENB) method at room and at elevated temperatures, up to $1200^{\circ}C$. Stable fraacture was seen on ceramic materials with SENB specimens if the machined notch is deep enough, even though the crack resistance did not increase with crack length. Hot pressed silicon nitride did not show the rising R-curve behavior at room temperature, but it showed some rising at $1000^{\circ}C$ and above. Si3N4 reinforced with SiC whiskers showed no rising behavior at room and elevated temperatures, as it has smaller grain size, compare to the monolithic specimen. Gas pressure sintered silicon nitride had very large and elongated grains, and it showed rising R-curve even at room temperature. However, it showed some creep behavior at $1200^{\circ}C$ and the calculated R-curve on this condition did not show a good result. We cannot apply this technique on this condition for obtaining the R-curve.

  • Relations between the composites of SiC-$ZrB_2$ electro-conductive ceramic composites and their electrical resistivity, as well as their temperature, were investigated. The electrical resistivity of hot-pressed composites was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature of RT to $100^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites follow the electrical conduction model for a homogenous mixture of two kinds of particles with different conductivity. Also the electrical resistivity versus temperature curves indicate the formation of local chains of $ZrB_2$ particles. In the case of SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites containing above 30Vol.% $ZrB_2$ showed PTCR, whereas the electrical resistivity of SiC-15Vol.% $ZrB_2$ showed NTCR.
