  • Sampling based uncertainty analysis was carried out to quantify uncertainty in predictions of best estimate code RELAP5/MOD3.2 for a thermal hydraulic test (10% hot leg break LOCA) performed in the Large Scale Test Facility (LSTF) as a part of an IAEA coordinated research project. The nodalisation of the test facility was qualified for both steady state and transient level by systematically applying the procedures led by uncertainty methodology based on accuracy extrapolation (UMAE); uncertainty analysis was carried out using the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method to evaluate uncertainty for ten input parameters. Sixteen output parameters were selected for uncertainty evaluation and uncertainty band between $5^{th}$ and $95^{th}$ percentile of the output parameters were evaluated. It was observed that the uncertainty band for the primary pressure during two phase blowdown is larger than that of the remaining period. Similarly, a larger uncertainty band is observed relating to accumulator injection flow during reflood phase. Importance analysis was also carried out and standard rank regression coefficients were computed to quantify the effect of each individual input parameter on output parameters. It was observed that the break discharge coefficient is the most important uncertain parameter relating to the prediction of all the primary side parameters and that the steam generator (SG) relief pressure setting is the most important parameter in predicting the SG secondary pressure.

  • A transient natural circulation behavior during a LOCA at hot-standby operation is evaluated for YGN Units 3/4. The plant initial condition is determined within the EOP limitation as suitable to hot-standby mode and the transient scenario is prepared as relevant to evaluation of transient natural circulation. A 0.4% cold leg break with loss of off-site power is calculated with RELAP5/MOD3.2, whose predictability has been verified for SBLOCA natural circulation test, S-NC-8B. Through one hour transient analysis, it is found that the plant has its own decay heat removal capability by natural circulation following a LOCA, at hot-standby mode. Additional calculation is performed to investigate an effect of HPSI flow on natural circulation.

  • In this study, fatigue strength of load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints were evaluated using a new method proposed by Yamada, for geometric or structural stress in welded joint, that is, one-millimeter stress below the surface in the direction corresponding to the expected crack path. Validity of the method is verified by analyzing fatigue test results for load-carrying cruciform welded specimens has different size of weld toe radius, leg length and plate thickness reported in literature. Structural stress concentration factor for 1mm below the surface was calculated by finite element analysis for each specimen respectively. When compared to the basic fatigue resistance curve offered by BS7608, the one-millimeter stress method shows conservative evaluation for load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints.

  • This work was carried out to study the carcass characteristics, the chemical composition and the fatty acid profile in Longissimus muscle (LM) of bull breeds Nellore, NEL (11), Caracu, CAR (12) and Holstein-Friesian, HFR (12) finished in a feedlot. The bulls were fed twice a day with corn silage, cotton meal, cracked corn, urea, limestone and mineral salt. NEL and CAR bulls had similar (p>0.05) final weight and hot carcass weight. However, NEL and CAR bulls had higher (p<0.05) final weight and hot carcass weight than HFR bulls. Carcass hot dressing, carcass conformation, cushion thickness, Longissimus muscle area and texture were similar (p>0.05) among NEL, CAR and HFR bulls. NEL and HFR bulls had higher (p<0.05) carcass length in comparison to the CAR breed. Nellore breed had higher (p<0.05) leg length in comparison to CAR and HFR breeds. Leg length was similar (p>0.05) between CAR and HFR breeds. Thickness fat, color and marbling score were lower (p<0.05) in NEL breed in comparison to CAR and HFR breeds. LM of NEL bulls had higher (p<0.05) meat moisture content in comparison to CAR and HFR bulls. In contrast, lipid content was lower (p<0.10) in HFR bulls. LM ash and crude protein contents were similar (p>0.05) among breeds. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) were higher (p<0.10) in HFR animals. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-6, n-3 and PUFA/SFA ratio were similar (p>0.05) among the different breeds. N-6/n-3 ratio was higher (p<0.05) in CAR animals.

  • Boric acid concentrations of the refueling water storage tank (RWST) and the accumulators for Ulchin 1&2 (UCN 1&2) are increased to meet the post loss of coolant accident (post-LOCA) shutdown requirement for the extended fuel cycles from 12 months to 18 months. To maintain long term cooling (LTC) capability following a LOCA, the switchover tine is examined using BORON code to prevent the boron precipitation in the reactor core with the increased boron concentrations. The analysis results show that, at 8 hours after the initiation of LOCA. the emergency core noting system (ECCS) should be manually realigned to the simultaneous recirculation mode from the cold leg recirculation mode.

  • High-temperature design evaluations were conducted on Type 316L stainless steel piping for a 700 ℃ large-capacity thermal energy storage verification test loop (TESET) under construction at KAERI. The hot leg piping with sodium coolant at 700 ℃ connects the main components of the loop heater, hot storage tank, and air-to-sodium heat exchanger. Currently, the design rules of ASME B31.1 and RCC-MRx provide design procedures for high-temperature piping in the creep range for Type 316L stainless steel. However, the design material properties around 700 ℃ are not available in those rules. Therefore, a number of material tests, including creep tests at various temperatures, were conducted to determine the insufficient material properties and relevant design coefficients so that high-temperature design on the 700 ℃ piping may be possible. It was shown that Type 316L stainless steel can be used in a 700 ℃ high-temperature piping system of Generation IV reactor systems or a renewable energy systems, such as thermal energy storage systems, for a limited operation time.

  • Purpose : Most of the moderns have been spent sedentary life style in front of desk or on the chairs, so that their hamstring muscles are shorted commonly and the shortness of hamstring muscles are caused to some problems in functional activities. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of thermotherapy with hot-pack and ultrasound on the tightness of hamstring muscles in individuals with hamstring tightness. Method : Twenty-eight persons with hamstring tightness participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to three exercise groups: stretching group(n=10), hot-pack group(n=9), and ultrasound group(n=9). Before experiment, this study measured the angle of hip flexion using a inclinometer in all participants. Stretching group conducted actively stretching on their shorted leg for 30 seconds, 3 times, and rest for 10 seconds between each exercises. Hot-pack group have applied hot-pack($70{\sim}75^{\circ}C$) on shorted hamstring muscles for 20 minutes before stretching exercise. Ultrasound group have applied therapeutic ultrasound(1 MHz and 1.5W/cm2) on shorted hamstring muscles for 10 minutes before stretching exercise. All data was analysed using one-way repeated ANOVA. Result : The results revealed that ultrasound therapy before stretching is more effective to the flexibility on hamstring muscles than hot-pack before stretching and stretching only. Conclusion : The results of this study show that thermotherapy with therapeutic ultrasound will be effective on the shortness of hamstring muscles before stretching exercise.

  • The hot spot on liver scan was demonstrated by many authors in various conditions such as SVC obstruction, Budd-Chiari syndrome, liver abscess, hemangioma of liver, hepatic venoocclusive diseases, IVC obstruction, and tricuspid insufficiency. And the appearance of hot spot in SVC obstruction is due to unsual collateral circulation. But there was no report of this hots pot on liver scan in our country. We have recently observed one patient with SVC obstruction who shows well-defined area of increased radioactivity between right and left lobe of liver on liver scan using $^{99m}Tc-tin$ colloid, and demonstrated collateral circulations with RI venography using $^{99m}Tc-O_4$. The injection site of radiocolloid was left antecubital vein. This hot spot did not appear when the radiocolloid was injected into right leg vein. We report here this hot spot on liver scan in SVC obstruction with review of some liter atures.

  • This study was to determine the effect of cooling parts of the limbs without harm to health. The results provide basic data for the development of clothing which could increase work efficiency and reduce body strain in hot environments. Five male adults took part in the study, conducted in a climate chamber with an ambient temperature of $37^{\circ}C$ and a relative humidity of 50%. The limbs were divided into six areas to be cooled: upper arm, forearm, thigh, calf, hand, and foot. According to preceding studies, permissible cooling safety limits of skin temperature for each part of the body for one-hour were $20^{\circ}C$ on the upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf, and $23^{\circ}C$ on the hand and foot. For this reason, cooling the skin of each region was carried out at the above mentioned temperatures. In conclusion, cooling the hand and foot reduced perspiration, rectal temperature and heart rate. Therefore, the heat stress of workers exposed to hot environments would be reduced by decreased subjective sensations of heat and increased comfort. The effectiveness of cooling was better on the arm than on the leg.

  • Background: Aconitum sinomontanum Nakai (ASN) has been reported to have analgesic effects. In this study an animal model of pharmacopuncture using ASN (100-500 mg/kg) was examined. Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n = 40) were randomly assigned to ASN-Low (1 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-L), ASN-Intermediate (5 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-M), ASN-High (10 mg/mL, 1.8 mL, ASN-H), negative control (0.2 mL normal saline), and positive control (0.2 mL 0.5% lidocaine) groups. All experiments were administered to the rats' left hind leg. The analgesic response was assessed by monitoring the physical (hot plate, and von Frey test) and chemical (formalin) responses to pain. Results: All ASN pharmacopuncture groups demonstrated significant differences in pain response to the hot plate test, von Frey test, and formalin test, compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The response of the ASN-M group and ASN-H groups to the hot plate, the formalin, and the von Frey tests were significantly different, compared to the lidocaine group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: ASN pharmacopuncture had a significant analgesic effect on SD rats in response to physical and chemical models of pain.
