  • In Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks, the transmit power control (TPC) mechanism consists of two parts: the open loop (OL) and closed loop. Most cellular networks consider OL/TPC because of its simple implementation and low operation cost. The analysis of OL/TPC parameters is essential for efficient resource management from the cellular operator's viewpoint. In this work, the impact of the OL/TPC parameters is investigated for homogeneous small cells and heterogeneous small-cell/macrocell network environments. A mathematical model is derived to compute the transmit power at the user equipment, the received power at the eNodeB, the interference in the network, and the received signal-to-interference ratio. Using the analytical platform, the effects of the OL/TPC parameters on the system performance in LTE networks are investigated. Numerical results show that, in order to achieve the best performance, it is appropriate to choose ${\alpha}_{small}=1$ and $P_{o-small}=-100dBm$ in a homogenous small-cell network. Further, the selections of ${\alpha}_{small}=1$ and $P_{o-small}=-100dBm$ in the small cells and ${\alpha}_{macro}=0.8$ and $P_{o-macro}=-100dBm$ in the macrocells seem to be suitable for heterogeneous network deployment.

  • The traditional formulations for estimation of bearing capacity in rock mechanics assume a homogeneous and isotropic rock mass. However, it is common that the rock mass consists of different layers of different rock properties or of the same rock matrix with distinct geotechnical quality levels. The bearing capacity of a heterogeneous rock is estimated traditionally through the weighted average. In this paper, the solution of the weighted average is compared to the finite difference method applied to a bilayer rock mass. The influence of different parameters such as the thickness of the layers, the rock type, the uniaxial compressive strength and the overall geotechnical quality of the rock mass on the bearing capacity of a bilayer rock mass is analyzed. A parametric study by finite difference method is carried out to develop a bearing capacity factor in function of the layer thickness and the rock mass quality expressed in terms of the geological strength index, which is presented in a form of a chart. Therefore, this correlation factor allows estimating the bearing capacity of a rock mass that is formed by two layers with distinct GSI, depending on the bearing capacity of the rock mass formed only by the upper layer and considered by that way as homogenous and isotropic rock mass.

  • Our purpose is to present a novel technique for delivering craniospinal irradiation in the supine position using a perfect match, field-in-field (FIF) intrafractional feathering, and simple forward-optimization technique. To achieve this purpose, computed tomography simulation was performed with patients in the supine position. Half-beam, blocked, opposed, lateral, cranial fields with a collimator rotation were matched to the divergence of the superior border of an upper-spinal field. Fixed field parameters were used, and the isocenter of the upper-spinal field was placed at the same source-to-axis distance (SAD), 20 cm inferior to the cranial isocenter. For a lower-spinal field, the isocenter was placed 40 cm inferior to the cranial isocenter at a constant SAD. Both gantry and couch rotations for the lower-spinal field were used to achieve perfect divergence match with the inferior border of the upper-spinal field. A FIF technique was used to feather the craniospinal and spinal-spinal junction daily by varying the match line over 2 cm. The dose throughout the target volume was modulated using the FIF simple forward optimization technique to obtain homogenous coverage. Daily, image-guided therapy was used to assure and verify the setup. This supine-position, perfect match craniospinal irradiation technique with FIF intrafractional feathering and dose modulation provides a simple and safe way to deliver treatment while minimizing dose inhomogeneity.

  • Chordoid glioma is a rare, low-grade brain neoplasm typically located in the third ventricle. Herein, we report an unusual case of histologically confirmed chordoid glioma located in the pituitary fossa and suprasellar region, not attached to the third ventricle. A 57-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of headache and visual disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an ovoid mass in the pituitary fossa and suprasellar region, compressing the optic chiasm without involvement of the third ventricle. The tumor showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and iso- to high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, with strong and homogenous contrast enhancement. Subtotal resection was performed via the transcranial approach, and the patient subsequently received adjuvant gamma knife radiosurgery. However, the residual mass showed disease progression 5 months after the initial surgery.

  • The incidental finding of an enlarged mastoid foramen on the right posterior mastoid region of temporal bone is reported, together with a discussion of its clinical significance. A 67-year-old female underwent the pre-implant assessment of a maxillary left edentulous region. A cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) image was acquired and referred for consultation. Axial CBCT slices revealed a unilateral, well-defined, noncorticated, low-attenuation, transosseous defect posterior to the mastoid air cells in the right temporal bone. The borders of the osseous defect were smooth and continuous. No other radiographic signs suggestive of erosion or sclerosis were noted in the vicinity. The density within the defect was homogenous and consistent with a foramen and/or soft tissue. The patient's history and physical examination revealed no significant medical issues, and she was referred to a neuroradiologist for a second opinion. The diagnosis of an enlarged mastoid foramen was made and the patient was reassured.

  • Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a technique for determining the electrical conductivity and permittivity distribution within the interior of a body from measurements made on its surface. One recent application area of the EIT is the detection of breast cancer by imaging the conductivity and permittivity distribution inside the breast. The present standard for breast cancer detection is X-ray mammography, and it is desirable that EIT and X-ray mammography use the same geometry. A forward model of a simplified mammography geometry for EIT imaging was proposed earlier. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm for computing the current pattern that will be applied to the electrodes. The current pattern applied to the electrodes influences the voltages measured on the electrodes. Since the measured voltage data is going to be used in the impedance imaging computation, it is desirable to apply currents that result in the largest possible voltage signal. We compute the eigenfunctions for a homogenous medium that will be applied as current patterns to the electrodes. The algorithm for the computation of the eigenfunctions is presented. The convergence of the algorithm is shown by computing the eigencurrent of the simplified mammography geometry.

  • Pulmonary sequestration is the part of a spectrum of bronchopulmonary foregut anomalies in which a portion of lung parenchyma does not communicate with the tracheobronchial tree and usually receives its arterial supply from a systemic vessel. The sequestrated portion of the lung is susceptible to infection. The patient with this entity will have a paucity of symptoms and will present himself for treatment because of a persistent pneumonia. The associated aberrant systemic artery makes the preoperative diagnosis of the lesion imperative because of the life-threatening technical hazards posed by this artery. We experienced a case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration. Initially, the diagnosis of sequestration was unsuspected and open thoracotomy was done for management of homogenous cystic mass on left lower lobe, but one anomalous systemic artery from thoracic descending aorta to sequestrated lung was incidentally revealed. Then we underwent lower lobectomy and ligation of anomalous artery.

  • A 62-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of a mass shadow on chest film. Chest PA showed $7{\times}5cm$ lobulated homogenous mass in right upper medial area of lung. On chest computed tomography, there was a large irregularly lobulated mass with central necrotic low density area in apical segment of right upper lobe. Right upper lobectomy of the lung was performed. Partial adhesion to parietal pleura of posterior mediastinum and severe adhesion to right upper apicoposterior segment was found during the operation. Microscopic and ultrastructural studies(including immunocytochemical stains) of the mass revealed malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

  • The present paper deals with the nonlinear analysis of the functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) annular plate with two smart layers as sensor and actuator. The normal pressure is applied on the plate. The geometric nonlinearity is considered in the strain-displacement equations based on Von-Karman assumption. The problem is symmetric due to symmetric loading, boundary conditions and material properties. The radial and transverse displacements are supposed as two dominant components of displacement. The constitutive equations are derived for two sections of the plate, individually. Total energy of the system is evaluated for elastic solid and piezoelectric sections in terms of two components of displacement and electric potential. The response of the system can be obtained using minimization of the energy of system with respect to amplitude of displacements and electric potential. The distribution of all material properties is considered as power function along the thickness direction. Displacement-load and electric potential-load curves verify the nonlinearity nature of the problem. The response of the linear analysis is investigated and compared with those results obtained using the nonlinear analysis. This comparison justifies the necessity of a nonlinear analysis. The distribution of the displacements and electric potential in terms of non homogenous index indicates that these curves converge for small value of piezoelectric thickness with respect to elastic solid thickness.

  • In 2001, we conducted a study to assess the effects of differential arrival times and nest-site selection on reproductive performance in a mixed-species heronry consisting of six species in Taeseong-ri, Chungbuk, Korea. We recorded the arrival dates, nest heights, clutch sizes, and brood sizes after 15-20 days of the age of the birds' chicks. The grey herons and cattle egrets arrived first and last, respectively, on the colony site. In the homogenous vegetation structure of the breeding site, the pitch pine trees (Pinus rigida) were mainly used for building nests on 48 of the 50 pine trees (96%). The breeding species vertically stratifies the nest sites according to their body size, except for the cattle egrets and black-crowned night herons that nested at sites higher than those predicted from their body size. The mean nest success rates of the six species under study were positively correlated with the mean nest heights. Our findings suggest that aggressive interspecific interactions among neighbors influence nest-site selection to enhance breeding success.
