  • Space charge formation in epoxy/silica composites has been investigated by the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method. The addition of silica resulted in homocharge formation, which attributed to the interfacial trapping of injected charge at epoxy/silica interfaces, Homocharge accumulation with increase of voltage and silica content.

  • Space charge formation at high temperature was investigated in several polymers using pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method. In SXLPE, homocharge is found and increased as an increase of temperature. In a charge of polarity of poling voltage(positive to negative), space charge mainly cause of hole injection. In Ionomer, heterocharge is found because of ion. As an increase of temperature heterocharge is also increased. In PET, As an increase of temperature homocharge is decreased.

  • Effects of types of semicon compounds on electrical properties of XLPE were investigated. The amounts of charge of XLPE were changed with the contents of additive included in semicon electrodes, but homocharge in cathode was observed. In the aging experiment under high voltage, it was found that semiconductive layer with high impurity contents played an important role in the decrease of ACBD strength of XLPE.

  • We observed internal space charge behavior for two types of epoxy composites under dc electric fields to investigate the influence of water at high temperature. In the case of glass/epoxy specimen, homocharge is observed at water-treated specimen, and spatial oscillations become clearer in the water-treated specimens. Electric field in the vicinity of the electrodes shows the injection of homocharge. In aramid/epoxy specimens, heterocharge is observed at water-treated specimens, i.e. negative charge accumulates near the anode, while positive charge accumulates near the cathode. Electric field is enhanced just before each electrode. In order to further examine the mechanism of space charge formation, we have developed a new system that allows in situ space charge observation during ion migration tests at high temperature and high humidity. Using this in situ system.

  • Effects of molecular characteristics such as melt index and shapes of molecular weight distribution on the charge formation in LDPE have been investigated. Both homocharge and heterocharge were observed in LDPE depending on the value of melt index. It was found that the LDPE having intermediate melt indices shows heterocharge while the LDPE having small and high melt indecies shows homocharge. The shapes of molecular weight distributions were also found to affect the space charge in LDPE. These were explained by the role of short chains having low molecular weight in LDPE.

  • Charge formation in filled ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) compound has been investi gated. Homocharge was found in pure crosslinked EPDM. The homocharge decreased with the increased of ATH content in EPOM while increased with the increase of clay in EPDM.

  • Electrical properties such as tracking resistance, dielectric constant, $tan\delta$, and volume resistivity, and mechanical properties such as tensile, and strength, and % elongation were measured with the alumina trihydrate filled with EPDM. The results were dicussed in terms of the effect of hydroxyl group. The test results show that the tracking resistance of EPDM improves with the increase in ATH content, whereas volume resistivity, dielectric constant, $tan\delta$ decrease wi th increasing ATH content due to polar nature of ATH. In the charge accumulation characteristics, the homocharge is formed in pure EPDM, and as the ATH content increases in the EPDM compound, the amount of homocharge decrease.

  • The accumulation of space charge in PE/PE/PE laminates was investigated using the low density polyethylenes having different melt indices from 0.25 to 45 g/10 min. Both heterocharge and homocharge accumulated in parent polyethylenes depend on the value of melt index. A general rule found in this study was that the heterocharge decreases as the melt index increases and finally the homocharge accumulates when the melt index is very high. Because of this reason, PE laminates showed different charge formation characteristics depending on melt index of polyethylene. Details of up to date results are described in the text.
