  • Jeung Wan-yeong expresses his perception of hometown in two ways. First, it is a nature-friendly pastoral place. His geographical hometown, a nature-friendly pastoral place, is Gimcheon; he produced many works in which he longed for nature in the place. These works have a large amount of lyric, pastoral, and bucolic contents, without any conflict, on the basis of peace, longing, and Oriental nature-friendly thought. Second, the hometown perceived by Jeung Wan-yeong is a rest place for both ancestors and descendants. According to his definition, 'Hometown is a village where the living and the dead coexist: Longing for a hometown immediately may be that for parents, and is often expressed as that for siblings and old friends. In other words, a hometown is a place where there are ancestors' graves, and parents, siblings, and relatives; in Jeung Wan-yeong's works where it is perceived as a place with memories for them. the hometown has eternal maternity.

Moreover, they preferred Korean-style foods to food from other countries. Mass media has aroused interest in hometown foods. However, hometown foods require standard recipes certain levers of autonomy for the population. Hometown foods are valuable and should be handed down the next generation through publicity. For example, Kkotgetang(blue crab soup) was the best known hometown foods followed by kkotgegang(fermented blue crab with sauce), saeujeot(salted and fermented shrimp), eorigul jeot(salted and fermented oyster with red pepper) in that orders. The most preferred food was kkokgetang(blue crab soup) followed by kkotgegang(fermented blue crab with sauce).

  • The aim of this study was to achieve an understanding of the experiences of divided families in South Korea. The study adopted a qualitative method based on the interpretive science paradigm The participants were 14 elderly people who came from North Korea around 1950 and identified as belonging to the first generation of divided families. In-depth individual interviews were carried out, focusing on what divided families experienced after leaving their hometown, how these experiences affected their meaning-making about their homecoming, and how the divided community has changed. The result of theme analysis indicated that the first generation of divided families identified themselves as "people who lost their hometown." their hometown implied multiple losses, including their family members, socioeconomic status, and psychological support systems. The participants explained the process of their settlement and adaptation to South Korea based on the cohesion of the divided family community. However, they anticipated that the divided family community would fade away because of the aging of the first generation, the indifference of the second generation, and the frustration that existed about the reunion of the divided family members. The participants showed a realistic view on returning to their hometown after the reunification of North Korea and South Korea.

We analyzed data from 409 of the 549 incoming students at Keimyung University School of Medicine, excluding 140 individuals with missing data, from the academic years 2015 to 2021. Significant differences were found according to hometown in feelings of depression, suicidal tendencies, and internet addiction. There were also significant differences based on university life adaptation in feelings of depression, suicidal tendencies, and internet addiction, as well as significant differences according to academic aptitude in feelings of depression and internet addiction. Academic failure showed significant differences based on hometown, university life adaptation, and academic aptitude. Furthermore, students' hometown had a complete mediating effect on academic failure together with feelings of depression, suicidal tendencies, and internet addiction. University life adaptation exhibited a complete mediating effect with suicidal tendencies and a partial mediating effect with feelings of depression and internet addiction. Academic aptitude demonstrated partial mediating effects on feelings of depression, suicidal tendencies, and internet addiction. Based on these results, we suggest establishing counseling programs tailored to the characteristics of medical students, and various programs for university life adaptation are necessary.
