  • A new hit-and-miss ratio transform is introduced as a modified hit-and-miss transform to be robust to noise, which uses a quasi-matching technique based on the fitting ratio functions. And a new gray-level object segmentation algorithm is proposed, which is based on the hit-and-miss ratio transform and threshold decomposition. The proposed segmentation images, and is similarly applicable to segmentation of an object with specific shapes form natural real images.

  • In this paper we study and analyze the influence of caching strategies on the performance of WWW servers, We propose a new strategy called file type based caching that aims to obtain a well-balanced mixture between large and small files in the cache, and moreover, it provides good performance for both small and large file as expected, By using the type based caching good results are obtained for both the hit rate and the byte hit rate.

  • A microprocessor, which is used as a CPU for state-of-the-art personal computers, adopts 256KB or 512KB L2(Level 2) cache memory. This cache hires Direct Mapping Procedure, 32B Line Size, and no Write Allocation. In this cache architecture, we can expert about 2.5% hit ratio improvement by using 8-way Set Associative Mapping instead of Direct Mapping, 128B Line Size instead of 32B, and Write Allocation.

  • As the great disturbance from abusing credit cards in Korea becomes stabilized, credit card companies need to interpret credit-card delinquents classification models from the viewpoint of profit. However, hit ratio which has been used as a measure of goodness of classification models just tells us how much correctly they classified rather than how much profits can be obtained as a result of using classification models. In this research, we tried to develop a new utility-based measure from the viewpoint of profit and then used this new measure to analyze two classification models(Neural Networks and Decision Tree models). We found that the hit ratio of neural model is higher than that of decision tree model, but the utility value of decision tree model is higher than that of neural model. This experiment shows the importance of utility based measure for credit-card delinquents classification models. We expect this new measure will contribute to increasing profits of credit card companies.

  • In developing an automated surface inspect algorithm, we have designed a hierarchical classifier using neural network. The defects which exist on the surface of cold mill strip have a scattering or singular distribution. We have considered three major problems, that is preprocessing, feature extraction and defect classification. In preprocessing, Top-hit transform, adaptive thresholding, thinning and noise rejection are used Especially, Top-hit transform using local minimax operation diminishes the effect of bad lighting. In feature extraction, geometric, moment, co-occurrence matrix, and histogram ratio features are calculated. The histogram ratio feature is taken from the gray-level image. For defect classification, we suggest a hierarchical structure of which nodes are multilayer neural network classifiers. The proposed algorithm reduced error rate by comparing to one-stage structure.

  • With the increasing number of mobile device users worldwide, utilizing mobile edge computing (MEC) devices close to users for content caching can reduce transmission latency than receiving content from a server or cloud. However, because MEC has limited storage capacity, it is necessary to determine the content types and sizes to be cached. In this study, we investigate a caching strategy that increases the hit ratio from small base stations (SBSs) for mobile users in a heterogeneous network consisting of one macro base station (MBS) and multiple SBSs. If there are several SBSs that users can access, the hit ratio can be improved by reducing duplicate content and increasing the diversity of content in SBSs. We propose a Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based caching strategy that considers time-varying content popularity and content redundancy in multiple SBSs. Content is stored in the SBS in a divided form using maximum distance separable (MDS) codes to enhance the diversity of the content. Experiments in various environments show that the proposed caching strategy outperforms the other methods in terms of hit ratio.

  • The present study was designed to examine the potential antidiabetic and antioxidant effect of ethanol extract from $Prunus$ $mume$ fruit (PME) against alloxan-induced oxidative stress in pancreatic ${\beta}$-cells, HIT-T15. To evaluate the antidiabetic effect of PME, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliu bromide (MTT) cell proliferation assay, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay, $NAD^+$/NADH ratio and insulin secretion were assessed. We also measured its antioxidant effect against alloxan-induced oxidative stress in the cells by assessing the levels of the antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The results of this analysis showed that alloxan significantly decreased cell viability, increased LDH leakage, and lowered $NAD^+$ /NADH ratio and insulin secretion in HIT-T15 cells. However, PME significantly increased the viability of alloxan-treated cells and lowered LDH leakage. The intracellular $NAD^+$ /NADH ratio and insulin secretion were also increased by 1.5~1.9-fold and 1.4-fold, respectively, after treatment with the PME. The HIT-T15 cells treated with alloxan showed significant decreases in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, while PME significantly elevated the levels of antioxidant enzymes. Based on these results, we suggest that PME could have a protective effect against the cytotoxicity and dysfunction of pancreatic ${\beta}$-cells in the presence of alloxan-induced oxidative stress.

  • This study reviewde various parametic and nonparametic method for forexasting hospital closures in Korea. We compared multivariate discriminant analysis, multivartiate logistic regression, classfication and regression tree, and neural network method based on hit ratio of each model for forecasting hospital closure. Like other studies in the literture, neural metwork analysis showed highest average hit ratio. For policy and business purposes, we combined the four analytical method and constructed a foreasting model that can be easily used to predict the probabolity of hospital closure given financial information of a hospital.

  • General replacement policy includes document-based LRU or LFU technique and other various replacement policies are used to replace the documents within cache effectively. But, these replacement policies function only with regard to the time and frequency of document request, not considering the popularity of each web site. In this paper, we present the document replacement policies with regard to the popularity of each web site, which are suitable for modern network environments to enhance the hit-ratio and efficiently manage the contents of cache by effectively replacing documents on intermittent requests by new ones.

  • The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential antidiabetic and antioxidant effect of the ethanol extract from Chrysanthemum cornarium L. var. spatiosum(CSE) against alloxan-induced oxidative stress in pancreatic ${\beta}$-cells, HIT-T15. In this study, the antidiabetic effect of CSE was examined using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliu bromide(MTT) cell proliferation assay, lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) release assay, $NAD^+$/NADH ratio and insulin secretion. To further investigate whether CSE is involved in the antioxidant activity of alloxan-damaged HIT-T15 cells, its antioxidant effect against alloxan-induced oxidative stress was measured in HIT-T15 cells by determining the levels of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione S-transferase(GST), glutathione reductase(GR) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx). The results of this analysis showed that alloxan significantly decreased cell viability, increased LDH leakage, and lowered $NAD^+$/NADH ratio and insulin secretion in HIT-T15 cells. However, CSE significantly increased the viability of alloxan-treated cells and lowered LDH leakage. The intracellular NAD+/NADH ratio and insulin secretion were also significantly increased by 1.7-fold and 1.3-fold, respectively, after treatment with 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ CSE. The HIT-T15 cells treated with alloxan showed significant decreases in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, while CSE significantly elevated the levels of antioxidant enzymes. These findings suggest that CSE could have a protective effect against cytotoxicity and dysfunction of pancreatic cells in the presence of alloxan-induced oxidative stress.
