Water projects and technologies in Asia: Historical perspective

  • This presentation highlights the IAHR book, recently published last April, of which the author is the editor-in-chief, on the historical water projects and traditional water technologies of international interest in the Asian region, addressing information on past water projects (mostly before the 20th century) in the regions that are technically and culturally of interest and educationally valuable. The book explores historical water projects in these regions, presenting technologies used at the time, including calculation and forecasting methods, measurement, material, labor, methodologies, and even water culture. Through this book, it is expected that the old Asian wisdom of "reviewing the old and learning the new" would be realized to a certain extent in modern planning and practice of water projects. The book comprises a lead article that the presenter authored and five Parts representing China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, respectively, followed by an invited one from Uzbekistan. Throughout the book, it is found that historically the Asian monsoon, affecting the Indian subcontinent and Southeast and East Asian regions, induced rice cultivation. It fundamentally needs proper irrigation systems, including reservoirs (dams) and canals, water wheels, and even rain gauges. Flood risks have been more common in Asia than Europe under this climate condition, as recognized in history. To utilize and sometimes overcome these climate conditions, people built and managed many historical and grandiose water projects and invented and used localized but sophisticated water-related technologies in the Asian region.

역사문화지구의 퍼블릭 아트에서 나타나는 표현 특성과 아이덴티티 연구 - 징더전 시 도계천을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics and Identity of Public Art in Historical and Cultural Areas - Focused on Taoxichuan in Jingdezhen -)

  • 본 연구는 역사문화지구 퍼블릭 아트의 특징과 아이덴티티를 연구 대상으로 역사문화구역의 퍼블릭 아트에 대한 이론 연구와 조사를 통해 징더전 도계천이 대표하는 역사문화지구 퍼블릭 아트의 특성을 연구하였다. 공간적 특성과 아이덴티티를 형성하는 여섯 가지 평가요인인 환경성, 공공성, 상징성, 예술성, 역사성, 상호작용성을 중심으로 도계천 퍼블릭 아트의 특성과 아이덴티티를 분석과 평가하였다. 연구 결과 산업 유산물로 재탄생 한 7개 큰 굴뚝의 퍼블릭 아트는 완전히 보존된 산업역사 건물과 어울린다. 그중, 환경성, 공공성, 상징성, 예술성, 역사성이 명확한 구현을 갖추고 있으며 단지의 역사적 상징물로서 보존가치와 식별가능성이 높아 일반 퍼블릭 아트의 행사나 체험기능을 더하지 않아도 된다. 지역 재생을 위한 신퍼블릭 아트 중 퍼블릭 아트의 예술성, 환경성, 공공성이 높게 나타났고 환경성도 중간 수준을 보이고 있지만, 역사성이 높지 않고, 상호 작용성이 약하다. 산업 유산물로 재탄생한 퍼블릭 아트는 역사유적 퍼블릭 아트로 산업유산과 도자기 요소로 대중들의 시공간과소통을 형성하면서 대중에게 정신적 공감을 전달할 수 있는 아이덴티티를 형성하였으며, 지역재생을 위한 신 퍼블릭 아트는 도계천에 새로운 예술적 정취를 부여하였으나 새로운 아이덴티티는 나타내지 못하는 것으로 평가되었다.

A study on seismic behaviour of masonry mosques after restoration

  • Historical masonry structures have an important value for cultures and it is essential for every society to strengthen them and confidently transfer to the future. For this reason, determination of the seismic earthquake response, which is the most affecting factor to cause the damage at these structures, gain more importance. In this paper, the seismic earthquake behaviour of Kaya Çelebi Mosque, which is located in Turkey and the restoration process has still continued after 2011 Van earthquake, is determined. Firstly the dynamic modal analysis and subsequently the seismic spectral analysis are performed using the finite element model of the mosque constructed with restoration drawings in SAP2000 program. Maximum displacements, tensile, compressive and shear stresses are obtained and presented with contours diagrams. Turkish Earthquake Code and its general technical specifications are considered to evaluate the structural responses. After the analyses, it is seen that the displacements and compressive/shear stresses within the code limits. However, tension stresses exceeded the maximum values at some local regions. For this mosque, this is in tolerance limits considering the whole structure. But, it can be said that the tension stresses is very important for this type of the structures, especially between the stone and mortar. So, some additional strengthening solutions considering the originality of historical structures may be applicable on maximum tensile regions.

역사문화자원의 경관계획 활용방안에 관한 연구 - 청주시를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Historic and Cultural Resources for Landscape Planning - A Case of Cheongju City -)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the application plan for the landscape planning after grasping the current situation of the historical and cultural resources in Cheongju city and closely examining their conservation and use state. Concerning the method of the study, I considered the resources related concepts and came up with the characteristics of the historical and cultural resources and the application planning as landscape factors after the research on the actual condition and their present situation. Regarding the study or research, I studied the cultural assets, historical and cultural resources, historical and cultural planning, and further examined the historical and cultural resources by dividing them diversely and further, studied the current situation of their system and the related law. For the current situation of the historical and cultural landscape resource in Cheongju city I conducted the assessment of the landscape resources by areas, types, locations. On the basis of this study I came up with the basic direction for the application plan and the solution to the management of the landscape and think that these plans or suggestions will make a contribution to the establishment of their identity by regions.

  • 이 논문에서는 우리나라 적지적수 연구사에 관한 사료를 제시하였다. 필자는 조선시대의 임금에 대한 진상을 목적으로 한 적지적수사와 일제강점 초기의 간이적인 적지적수 연구 및 실시사례, 강점중기에 이르러서는 조선수목죽류 기후상적지도, 후기에는 속성수의 절지식재시험 및 지역별 조림수종 선발시험 등에 관한 주요 자료를 해외에서 수집 발굴하였다. 조선수목죽류 기후상적지도는 아직까지 국내에 알려지지 않은 자료로서 향후 우리나라 산지의 지원화 및 산불 피해지 복구조림, 남북통일을 대비한 북한지역 녹화사업의 기초자료로서 뿐만 아니라 고유임상 및 식생연구 등에도 유용하게 사용될 것으로 기대된다.

THE IAU TODAY AND THE ASIAN-PACIFIC REGION

  • We overview and discuss the IAU today from the viewpoint of its regions based on historical and statistical data, and consider the status and future of astronomy in the Asian-Pacific region. New activities of the IAU, the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) for the future evolution of astronomy are introduced. We also review the recent developments in astronomy in the Asian-Pacific region, and emphasize the importance of regional cooperation and coordination for the future.

  • This paper presents an overview of the large international projects in which the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is involved, namely, the Subaru Telescope, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and the Thirty Meter Telescope. The last section provides a brief historical view of the international collaboration in East Asia regions over the last 20 years.

지역정체성을 기반으로 한 공공환경 디자인의 방향 연구 (A Study on the Direction of the Public Environment Design based on the Regions' Sense of Identity)

  • The purpose of this study is to present the direction for effective public environment design by becoming aware of the social, cultural and historical values that are inherent to the specific regions once again. Concept of regions' sense of identity, regions' resources and regionality were identified as a means based on the basic cityscape plan and guideline for public design. Sample city was analyzed by extracting the regionality elements, and the results are as follows. First, appropriateness of the direction for the public environment design based on the regional identity was confirmed. The need to establish regional identity in the cityscape plan is specified when it comes to the basic goal, strategy and direction. Second, public environment design should be planned within the context of the cityscape. It is necessary to improve with integrated plan by setting up the consistent goal, direction and detailed guideline based on the basic concept of cityscape plan. Third, 'design city' requires the development of the unique design and planned techniques based on the harmony with the existing resources. It is necessary to uncover the powerful design elements that are exclusive to specific regions, and to search for differentiation and visualization to form consensus. Public environment based on regional identity will improve if the above mentioned research results are used as the basic data when it comes to the implementation of public environment design.

수산발효기술 (Fish Fermentation Technology)

  • The historical background of fish fermentation in Asia and other regions of the world is reviewed. The classification of fermented fish products in different regions is attempted with respect to the technology involved. The fermented fish products are largely divided into three groups; (1) high-salt, (2) low-salt, and (3) non-salt fermented. High-salt fermented products contain over 20% of salt and are represented by fish sauce, cured fish and fish paste. Low-salt fermented products contain 6-18% salt and are subdivided into lactic fermented products with added carbohydrate and acid pickling associated with low temperature. Non-salt fermented products are represented by the solid state bonito fermentation and some alkaline fermentation of flat fishes. The local names of the products in different regions are compared and classified accordingly. The microbial and biochemical changes during fish fermentation are considered in relation to the quality of the products, and their wholesomeness is reviewed.

기상청 지구시스템모델에서의 구름입자 수농도 모수화 방법 개선 (Improvement of Cloud Physics Parameterization in the KMA Earth System Model)

  • In the Korea Meteorological Administration earth system model (HadGEM2-AO), cloud drop number concentration is determined from aerosol number concentration according to the observed relationship between aerosol and cloud drop number concentrations. However, the observational dataset used for establishing the relationship was obtained from limited regions of the earth and therefore may not be representative of the entire earth. Here we reestablished the relationship between aerosol and cloud drop number concentrations based on a composite of observational dataset obtained from many different regions around the world that includes the original dataset. The new relationship tends to provide lower cloud drop number concentration for aerosol number concentration < 600 $cm^{-3}$ and the opposite for > 600 $cm^{-3}$. This new empirical relationship was applied to the KMA earth system model and the historical run (1861~2005) is made again. Here only the 30 year (1861~1890) averages from the runs with the new and the original relationships between aerosol and cloud drop number concentrations (newHIST and HIST, respectively) were compared. For this early period aerosol number concentrations were generally lower than 600 $cm^{-3}$ and therefore cloud drop number concentrations were generally lower but cloud drop effective radii were larger for newHIST than for HIST. The results from the complete historical run with the new relationship are expected to show more significant differences from the original historical run.
