  • Near-infrared spectroscopy is now being used in clinical diagnosis as a non-invasive monitor of tissue oxygenation state. However, due to lack of the optical pathlength information within tissues, it is still difficult to quantitate the hemoglobin concentration with present CW techniques. Time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS), which measures temporal profiles of emerging light from tissues, enables to estimate the pathlength distribution within tissues by converting time to distance. Consequently, quantitative measurement of tissue oxygenation is possible by analyzing the data with optical diffusion equation 1) or our Microscopic Beer-Lambert law2). Time-Resolved Spectroscopy System : TRS-1O3) Our TRS-10 system consists of a three-wavelength (759, 797, 833 nm) PLP as pulsed light source, a high speed PMT with high sensitivity and three signal-processing circuits for time-resolved measurement (CFD/TAC, A/D converter and histogram memory). Optical pulse train consisting of 759, 797 and 833nm is generated by PLP at 5㎒ repetition rate and irradiated a sample through a single optical fiber. The diffuse-reflected light from the sample is collected by a bundle fiber and then detected by the PMT for single photon measurement. After being amplified by a following fast amplifier, the electrical signals for each wavelength are picked out by CFD/TAC module. Then, a signal processing circuit integrated the TRS data for each wavelength individually. The simultaneous TRS measurement for three wavelengths achieved without any optical or mechanical switch. Experiment and Results Input and detection fibers of TRS-10 were attached at the human forehead with a fiber separation of 3cm. TRS measurements were continuously performed for about 20 minutes including 2 minutes hyper ventilation. It was observed that the total hemoglobin concentration was decreasing during the hyper ventilation and recovered until 2 minutes after hyper ventilation. On the other hand, the deoxy-hemoglobin concentration began to increase after hyper ventilation and had its peak at around 2 minute later, showing 502 drop from 75% to 60% due to inhibition of breathing by performing hyper ventilation. The results showed that this system might be able to quantitate the concentrations of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin in the human brain.

  • As a result of remarkable developments in multimedia technology, the image database system that can efficiently retrieve image data becomes a core technology of information-oriented society. In this paper, we proposed the 2-phase Image Retrieval System considering both color and shape information as the method of image features extraction for content-based image data retrieval. At the first level, to get color information, with improving and extending the indexing method using color distribution characteristic suggested by Striker et al., i.e. the indexing method considering local color distribution characteristics, the system roughly classifies images through the improved method. At the second level, the system finally retrieves the most similar image from the image queried by the user using the shape information about the image groups classified at the first level. To extract the shape information, we use the Improved Moment Invariants (IMI) that manipulates only the pixels on the edges of objects in order to overcome two main problems of the existing Moment Invariant methods large amount of processing and rotation sensitiveness which can frequently be seen in the Directive Histogram Intersection technique suggested by Jain et al. Experiments have been conducted on 300 automobile images. And we could obtain the more improved results through the comparative test with other methods.

  • Many audio watermarking researches which have been adapted to authenticate contents can not recover the original media after watermark removal. Therefore, reversible watermarking can be regarded as an effective method to ensure the integrity of audio data in the applications requiring high-confidential audio contents. Reversible watermarking inserts watermark into digital media in such a way that perceptual transparency is preserved, which enables the restoration of the original media from the watermarked one without any loss of media quality. This paper presents a new interval-based audio integrity authentication algorithm which can detect malicious tampering. To provide complete reversibility, we used differential histogram-based reversible watermarking. To authenticate audio in parts, not the entire audio at once, the proposed algorithm processes audio by dividing into intervals and the confirmation of the authentication is carried out in each interval. Through experiments using multiple kinds of test data, we prove that the presented algorithm provides over 99% authenticating rate, complete reversibility, and higher perceptual quality, while maintaining the induced-distortion low.

  • In this paper, we suggest an efficient image processing method for fast paper currency counting with pattern recognition. The patterns are consisted of feature data in each note object extracted from full reflection image of notes and a general contact image sensor(CIS) is used to aggregate the feature images. The proposed pattern recognition algorithm can endure image variation when the paper currency is scanned because it is not sensitive to changes of image resulting in successful note recognition. We tested 100 notes per denomination and currency of several countries including Korea, U.S., China, EU, Britain and Turkey. To ensure the reliability of the result, we tested a total of 10 times per each direction of notes. We can conclude that this algorithm will be applicable to commercial product because of its successful recognition rates. The 100% recognition rates are obtained in almost cases with exceptional case of 99.9% in Euro and 99.8% in Turkish Lira.

  • National cancer registration reports provide a huge potential for identifying patterns and trends of important policy, research, prevention and treatment significance. As summary reports written on an annual basis, the China Cancer Registry Annual Reports (CCRARs) fall short from fully addressing their potential. This paper attempts to explore part of the patterns and trends hidden behind published CCRARs. It extracted data for cancer incidence rates (IRs) and mortality rates (MRs) for 2004, 2006 and 2009 from relevant CCRARs and portrayed 4 kinds of indicators in line graphs. The study showed that: a) all of the line graphs of age-specific IRs and MRs characterized typical "growth curves or histogram"; b) graphs of IRs and MRs for males and urban areas had higher peaks than that for females and rural regions; c) most of the line graphs of IR/MR ratios comprised a starting peak, a secondary peak and a decreasing tail and the secondary peaks for females and urban areas were higher than those for males and rural areas; d) most of the urban versus rural IR ratios valued above one, but most the urban versus rural MR ratios, below one; e) the accumulative IRs and MRs showed a stable increasing trend from 2004 to 2009 for urban areas, but mixed for rural regions.

  • In this paper, we propose a ultra sound inspection technique for automatic defect detection and classification in aircraft composite materials. Using local maximum values of ultra sound wave, we choose peak values for defect detection. Distance data among peak values are used to construct histogram and to determine surface and back-wall echo from the floor of composite materials. C-scan image is then composed through this method. A threshold value is determined by average and variance of the peak values, and defects are detected by the values. PCA(principal component analysis) and QDA(quadratic discriminant analysis) are carried out to classify the types of defects. In PCA, 512 dimensional data are converted into 30 PCs(Principal Components), which is 99% of total variances. Computational cost and misclassification rate are reduced by limiting the number of PCs. A decision boundary equation is obtained by QDA, and defects are classified by the equation. Experimental result shows that our proposed method is able to detect and classify the defects automatically.

  • The iris recognition is a biometrics technology to extract and code an unique iris feature from human eye image. Also, it includes the technology to compare with other's various iris stored in the system. On the other hand, eyelashes in iris image are a external factor to affect to recognition rate of iris. If eyelashes are not removed exactly from iris area, there are two false recognitions that recognize eyelashes to iris features or iris features to eyelashes. Eventually, these false recognitions bring out a lot of loss in iris informations. In this paper, in order to solve that problems, we removed eyelashes by gabor filter that using for analysis of frequency feature and improve preservation rate of iris informations. By novel method to extract various features on iris area using angle, frequency, and gaussian parameter on gabor filter that is one of the filters for analysing frequency feature for an image, we could remove accurately eyelashes with various lengths and shapes. As the result, proposed method represents that improve about 4% than previous methods using GMM or histogram analysis in iris preservation rate.

  • Geostatistics is defined as the theory of modeling of regionalized variables and is an efficient and elegant methodology for estimation and uncertainty evaluation from limited spatial sample data. In this study, we have made a theoretical comparison between kriging estimation and geostatistical simulation methods. Kriging methods do not preserve the histogram of original data nor their spatial structure, and also provide only an incomplete measure of uncertainty when compared to the simulation methods. A practical procedure of geostatistical simulation is suggested in this study and the technique is demonstrated through an application, in which it was used to identify the spatial distribution of RMR as well as to evaluate the spatial uncertainty. It is concluded that the geostatistical simulation is the appropriate method to quantify the spatial uncertainty of geotechnical variables such as RMA. Therefore, the results from the simulation can be used as useful information for designer's considerations in decision-making under various geological conditions as well as the related terms of contract.

  • Theta join is one of the essential and important types of queries in database systems. As the amount of data needs to be processed increases, processing theta joins with a single machine becomes impractical. Therefore, theta join algorithms using distributed computing frameworks have been studied widely. Although one of the state-of-the-art theta-join algorithms uses M-Bucket-I heuristic, it is hard to use since running time of M-Bucket-I heuristic, which computes a mapping from a record to a reducer (i.e., reducer mapping), is O(n) where n is the size of input data. In this paper, we propose MBI-I algorithm which reduces the running time of M-Bucket-I heuristic to $O(r_{max}log\;n)$ and gives the same result as M-Bucket-I heuristic does. We also conducted several experiments to show algorithm and confirmed that our algorithm can improve the performance of a theta join by 10%.
