Calculation of Design parameter of Si3N4 for Engineering part through the Measurement of Tensile strength (인장강도 시험을 통한 질화규소 소재의 설계계수 계산)

  • Design parameter of Si3N4 for engineering part could be calculated through the measurement of tensile strength with cylindrical specimen($\Phi$=7.15, ι=110mm) Relative densities of Si3N4 test specimen prepared by pressure-less sintering (PLS) and sinter/HIP were 98.5 and 99.2% respectively. Tensile strength of Si3N4 was 378 MPa for PLS and 509 MPa for sinter/HIP. By the Weibull statistic Design parameter such as Weibull modulus m=8-12 could be calcuated. Fracture strength of Si3N4 related to volume could be effectively pridicted by using Weibull theory.

A Case Report of Korean Rehabilitation Treatment and Analysis of Conservative Treatment of Pelvic Fracture in Korea (골반 골절에 한방재활치료를 적용한 증례 보고 및 보존적 치료에 대한 국내 문헌 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate conservative treatment of pelvic fracture, and report that Korean rehabilitation treatment is effective for pelvic fracture. We reported a case about pelvic fracture treated with Korean rehabilitation treatment. We searched 10 domestic electronic databases to find reports on conservative treatment of pelvic fracture. We selected and analyzed 12 studies. In this case, pain, range of motion, and Oswestry Disability Index of patient were improved by Korean rehabilitation treatment. In analysis, traction, pelvic sling, hip spica cast, pelvic belt, medication are used in western medical treatment. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, physical therapy, manual therapy are used in Korean medical treatment. Most of conservative treatments are effective for pain, bone union, osteoporosis, dysfunction. In this study, we expect further study of Korean rehabilitation treatment program for pelvic fracture to compensate existing conservative treatment.

A Study on Sintering and mechanical Properties of Sinter/HIPed SiC Whisker/$Al_2O_3$ Composite (Sinter/HIP 공정으로 제조한 SiC whisker/$Al_2O_3$ 복합재료의 소결 및 기계적 물성에 관한 연구)

  • Effects of sintering additives and sintering temperatures on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites have been investigated in this study. Dense (>95% TD) composites were obtained by using 2 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as liquid phase sintering additive. But only porous composite could be obtained when the sintering additives were MgO and $TiO_2$, which were known as the sintering additives for solid state sintering of alumina. Bending strength and fracture toughness were enhanced by reinforcement of SiC whisker. It is belived from the microstructure investigation that the enhanced by strength and toughness could be attribute to the reinforcing and grain growth inhibition effects of SiC whisker. After HIP treatment, fully dense composites were obtained and further enhanced mechanical properties achieved.

Feature Extraction and Evaluation for Classification Models of Injurious Falls Based on Surface Electromyography

  • Background: Only 2% of falls in older adults result in serious injuries (i.e., hip fracture). Therefore, it is important to differentiate injurious versus non-injurious falls, which is critical to develop effective interventions for injury prevention. Objects: The purpose of this study was to a. extract the best features of surface electromyography (sEMG) for classification of injurious falls, and b. find a best model provided by data mining techniques using the extracted features. Methods: Twenty young adults self-initiated falls and landed sideways. Falling trials were consisted of three initial fall directions (forward, sideways, or backward) and three knee positions at the time of hip impact (the impacting-side knee contacted the other knee ("knee together") or the mat ("knee on mat"), or neither the other knee nor the mat was contacted by the impacting-side knee ("free knee"). Falls involved "backward initial fall direction" or "free knee" were defined as "injurious falls" as suggested from previous studies. Nine features were extracted from sEMG signals of four hip muscles during a fall, including integral of absolute value (IAV), Wilson amplitude (WAMP), zero crossing (ZC), number of turns (NT), mean of amplitude (MA), root mean square (RMS), average amplitude change (AAC), difference absolute standard deviation value (DASDV). The decision tree and support vector machine (SVM) were used to classify the injurious falls. Results: For the initial fall direction, accuracy of the best model (SVM with a DASDV) was 48%. For the knee position, accuracy of the best model (SVM with an AAC) was 49%. Furthermore, there was no model that has sensitivity and specificity of 80% or greater. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the classification model built upon the sEMG features of the four hip muscles are not effective to classify injurious falls. Future studies should consider other data mining techniques with different muscles.

  • Psoas compartment block has been used to provide anesthesia and analgesia of hip joint. This block is advocated for relief of pain of various origins in the thigh, leg and lumbar area. A-40-year-old women complained of pain in the left thigh and lumbar area after operation of the second lumbar vertebral compression fracture. To relieve pain, caudal block was performed. This block reduced in lumbar pain but left thigh pain persisted. So, we were performed psoas compartment block using mepivacaine and dexamethasone, which relieved the pain in the left thigh and lumbar area. We recommend psoas compartment block as useful and simple method for patients with thigh and lumbar area pain, especially when the epidural block is not feasible.

  • In recent years, the importance of the characterization of fall for a fracture prevention system keeps increasing since fracture from a fall can lead to serious health problems. Fall is one of the major sources which increase morbidity in elderly people. In terms of the cost and the influence to the quality of life, the most serious injury with hip fractures is caused by falls. The traditional methods in characterizing fall patterns have been mainly by the epidemiological surveys. With surveys, the exact data of fall patterns can not been acquired. In this paper, we measured and analyzed with the parameters related to fall pattern such as velocities and accelerations during the motion of falls using 3D motion capture program. We acquired the parameters of the fall pattern of intentional and unexpected fall. The result showed that the variation of velocity and acceleration during fall was very important in characterizing fall pattern, which of vital importance for the development of a fracture prevention system and for the safety of the elderly

  • Massive bleeding due to traumatic pelvic bone fracture is a leading cause of death. Thus, several methods to control bleeding have been attempted, but none of these has yet been clearly established. After an automobile accident, a 34-year-old motorist was admitted to the Emergency Department for right hip,leg and abdominal pain. Because the patient's pressure remained consistently low and pelvic bone fracture and abdominal bleeding were found on radiologic examination, an explorative laparotomy was performed. After pelvic packing and bleeding control, bleeding still continued, so Angiography was performed, and arterial embolization for bleeding was performed.

  • Under unlubricated condition, the friction and wear tests of silicon nitride and zirconia manufactured by HIP were carried out at room temperature. The wear resistance of silicon nitride was superior to that of zirconia under low load, whereas the wear resistance of zirconia was superior to that of silicon nitride under high load. Wear model of ceramic was suggested by the microscopic SEM observation of worn surfaces and debris. Theoretical analysis and discussions based on linear fracture mechanics were made out about this ceramic wear model. From the theoretical analysis, a new nondimensional parameter, Scf, was introduced to estimate wear rate of ceramics. This new nondimentional parameter consists of contact pressure, surface defect of contact material, frictional coefficient and fracture toughness.

  • A 7-month-old Pomeranian presented with non-weight bearing lameness on the right pelvic limb. Physical examination revealed pain on extension of the right hip joint, and serum chemistry results showed an increased concentration of creatine kinase. Radiographic findings at admission included a weak radiolucent line on the right femoral head and widening of the right hip joint space, and mild displacement of the right capital femoral epiphysis was additionally identified on day 14. Computed tomography (CT) showed a decreased Hounsfield Unit measurement and a fracture line on the right femoral head. Early stage Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) was diagnosed and femoral head and neck ostectomy was performed on the right femur. A fracture fissure and osteophytes at the epiphyseal plate of the femoral head were identified surgically. Necrosis in the femoral metaphysis and epiphysis was observed histologically. This case report describes the radiography, CT images, and surgical and histological findings in a dog with early stage LCPD.

Mechanical and tribological characterization of $Si_{3}N_{4}-ZrO_{2}$ composites (질화규소-지르코니아 복합체의 기계적 및 내마모 특성)

  • In this study, the effects of the content of $ZrO_{2}$ in $Si_{3}N_{4}$ on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. $Si_{3}N_{4}$ based composites containing 0~40 wt% $ZrO_{2}$ powders were fabricated using hot isostatic pressing (HIP), at $1750^{\circ}C$, 172 MPa for 1 hour in $N_{2}$ gas. Mechanical properties and wear properties of composites were examined. Mechanical properties (hardness, strength, and fracture toughness) of $Si_{3}N_{4}-ZrO_{2}$ composite were decreased with increasing the amount of $ZrO_{2}$, but relative density of composites were increased. Further, the increase in amount of $ZrO_{2}$, reduced wear rates in air. It was found that wear behaviors in air were related to microcracking.
