  • This paper deals with the influence of elastic foundations on natural frequencies of curved beams. Taking into account the effects of rotatoy inertia and shear deformation, the differential equations governing free, out-of-plane vibrations of circular curved beams resting on Winkler-type foundations are derived and solved numerically. Hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered in numerical examples. The lowest three natural frequencies are claculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the foundation parameter, and the width ratio of contact area between the beam and foundation. The effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are also analyzed.

  • This paper explores the free vibrations of double hinged curved beams with transition segment. In this study, the clothoid curve is chosen as the transition segment of beams. The differential equations governing free vibration of such beams are derived in which the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of differential equations and to compute natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the double hinged end constraint is considered. The lowest four natural frequencies are presented as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the slenderness ratio, shear parameter and stiffness parameter.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of non-circular arches with non-uniform cross-section, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated for the prime parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. Three general taper types for rectangular section are considered. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, and section ratios are considered. The agreement with results determined by means of a finite element method is good from an engineering viewpoint.

  • In this research, 13 RC slabs connected by hinged joints were tested. the new slab was connected to the existing slab by hinge joint injecting dowel bars between two slabs. Main parameters of the slabs were the spacing of the dowel bars (150mm, 300mm, and 450mm) and the locations of the longitudinal reinforcement of the old slab. The test results indicated that the joint strength of the RC test slabs having various types of dowel bars was about twice that calculated by the ACI 318-02 code. The locations of the longitudinal reinforcement of the old slab slightly increased the strength of the slabs connected by hinged joints.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration of stepped noncircular arches. Taking into account the effects of axial deformation, rotatory inertia and shear deformation, the governing differential equations are solved numerically for the elliptic and sinusoidal geometries with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. The lowest four natural frequencies are presented as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters: the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the section ratio, and the discontinuous sector ratio.

  • A study of the coupled flexural-torsional vibrations of thin-walled beams with monosymmetric cross-section is presented. The governing differential equations for free vibration of such beams are solved numerically to obtain natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes. The beam model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the effect of warping is taken into consideration. Numerical results are given for two specific examples of beams with free-free, clamped-free, hinged-hinged, clamped-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints both including and excluding the effect of warping stiffness. The effect of warping stiffness on the natural frequencies and mode shapes is discussed and it is concluded that substantial error can be incurred if the effect is ignored.

  • Snap-buckling is one of the main failure modes of structures, because it will lead to the reduction of structural bearing capacity, durability loss and even structural damage. Boundary condition plays an important role in the research of engineering mechanics. Further discussion on the boundary conditions problems will help to analyze the dynamic and static behavior of structures more accurately. Therefore, in order to understand the dynamic and static behavior of curved beams more comprehensively, this paper mainly studies the nonlinear snap-through buckling and forced vibration characteristics of functionally graded graphene reinforced composites (FG-GPLRCs) curved beams with two different boundary conditions (including clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged) using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (E-BBT). In addition, the effects of the curved beam radius, the GLPs distributions, number of GLPs layers, the mass fraction of GLPs and elastic foundation parameters on the nonlinear snap-through buckling and forced vibration behavior are discussed respectively.

  • Steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) typically have inter-story drift concentrations at lower stories during earthquakes as found from previous research. Hinged walls (HWs) can be used as structural strengthening components to force the MRFs deform uniformly along the building height. However, large moment demands are often observed on HWs and make the design of HWs non-economical. This paper proposes a method to reduce the moment demand on HWs using a ductile connection system between the MRFs and the HWs. The ductile connection system is designed with a yield strength and energy dissipation capacity, for the purpose of limiting the seismic forces transferred to the HWs and dissipating seismic energy. Nonlinear time history analyses were performed using 10 far-filed earthquakes at maximum considered earthquake level. The analysis results show that the proposed ductile connection system can reduce: (1) seismic moment demands in the HWs; (2) floor accelerations; (3) the connection force between HWs and MRFs.

  • The free vibration of partially embedded piles is investigated. The pile model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the soil is idealized as a Winkler model for mathematical simplicity. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of such members is solved numerically The piles with one typical end constraint (clamped/hinged/free) and the other hinged end with rotational spring are applied in numerical examples. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the rotational spring parameter, the relative stiffness and the embedded ratio.

  • 3D finite element analyses of movable bearing shoe and hinged bearing shoe are performed. The finite element models are built using MSC/PATRAN and analyses are carried out using MSC/NASTRAN. Results are again completely processed using MSC/PATRAN. From the results of the analyses, trends of deformation and stress distribution are reviewed and important factors to consider in the design of bearing shoes are discussed. Furthermore optimum crowning amount for the roller of movable bearing shoe was determined according to the results of the analyses.
