  • This is a report of a case of superior vena caval syndrome due to idiopathic mediastinal fibrosis, which was surgically treated. The patient was 35-year-old Korean male who progressively complained shortness of breath about for 40 days prior to operation. Phlebogram of SVC showed indentation of SVC at the site of cavoatrial junction. The operation was performed under impression of bronchogenic cancer of right hilum. After thoracotomy, it was found a irregular mass in the mediastinum at the level of cavoatrial junction, which was developed to surrounding with SVC, pericardium, trachea and bronchus and they fixed together to immobile. Bypass graft between SVC and right atrial appendage was performed using a pericardial roll tube This is a report of a case of superior vena caval syndrome due to idiopathic mediastinal fibrosis, which was surgically treated. • Compare to investigate the taxonomic utility of infragenera system and interspecific of Asian Geranium, we examined the fruit and seed morphology from 35 taxa. The fruit shape and seed's dispersal way did so that may divide subgenus or some part section to do could reason evolutionary trends. That is, at seed dispersal, the awns of section Geranium of subgenus Geranium, ramains attached at the top of rostrum, though fairy easily broken off, because seed increases awn's elasticity by diffusive way, it is long characteristic seed\`s dispersal distance, and subgenus Robertium observed that seed dispersal distance is short because it is no awn's elasticity by way that seed dispersal is gone as awn drops with rostrum. Also, section Geranium of subgenus Geranium and subgenus Robertium act role that awn keeps temporarily breed swerving with mericarp instead of bristle because section Tuberosa of subgenus Geranium is not bristled function that keep temporarily breed because mericarp bristled on base at seed dispersal do while. Therefore, is thought that is talon that when consider formation's development and function regarding this seed dispersal function, subgenus Geraniuum evolves more than subgenus Robertium. Seed morphology can divide by 2 subgenera(Geranium, Robertium) according to pattern of seed coat. and Seed's morphology characteristic(whole shape, color, form of seed apical and base, micropyle area, hilum area, chalaza, and position of seed hilum area), can distinguish some species, but is thought that is not reasonable as for discernment characteristic form and nature by repetition of characteristic form and nature. Especially, infrasection do in fruit and seed's morphology that is handling in this research that know to argue classification system and relationship by repetition of characteristic form and nature difficult. To all reliable truth, cytological, ecological, embryology, and molecular genetics research about talon is considered that should be achieved section Geranium that do not handle yet.

  • The morphology and chemical properties of bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) root starch were investigated. The starch granules were mainly sphere and cocoon with the diameter of $5-12\mu$. Polarized micrograph indicated that the starch granule had a hilum at the center of granule, showing a crossed-birefringence. X-ray diffraction pattern demonstrated that the granules showed B-type. The density of the starch was 1.49 and the amylose content was 22%. The ferricyanide number and alkali number were 0.292 and 11.03, respectively. Proximate analysis showed that the starch contained 0.52% lipid, 0.63% ash and 150ppm phosphorus of which over 80% were found in the amylopectin fraction. The iodine affinity and molecular weight of amylose were 16.1 and 83,000 respectively. The degree of branching and glucose units per segment of amylopectin were 3.7% and 27, respectively.

  • Objectives : Pharbitidis Semen, the seeds of Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth or I. purpurea (L.) Roth, is well-known traditional herbal medicine in Korea. But it is often marketed as a different seed or mixtures of its closely related species. Thus, the present study aims to provide external and micromorphological characters and identification key by using stereoscope (ST) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for discriminating authentic of Pharbitidis Semen. Methods : A discrimination on external morphological characteristics of sepals, fruits, seeds, and hilum, testa cell micromorphology in the original plants and its congeneric species was carried out using digital calipers, ST, and SEM. Results : Number of valves (degree of apex of each valve), number of seeds per locule, hairy in capsules and size, luster, density of hairy, hilum shape in seeds and shape of cell, anticlinal, periclinal wall in testa may have high discriminative value. The seeds of Ipomoea nil as an original plant of Pharbitidis Semen were distinguished from other species by the relative larger in size, ovoid-trigonous in shape, mostly flabellate or triangular to trapezoid in outline (c.s.), dull, and puberulent in surface and thicken anticlinal wall. Conclusions : On the basis of the results, an identification key of Pharbitidis Semen and closely related species is provided. Our observations suggest that the combination of morphological characters and other studied results could be helpful in the successfully identified authentic herbal medicines. Moreover, micromorphological characters using SEM could be useful for discriminating authentic medicines.

  • Backgrounds/Aims: Splenectomy is the most frequently performed procedure as definitive management or as part of shunt surgery or devascularization in portal hypertension. Splenectomy is technically challenging because of the frequent coexistence of multiple collateral varices, splenomegaly, poor liver function, and thrombocytopenia. Early arterial ligation and late mobilization (EALDEM) is the traditional method for splenectomy in portal hypertension. Early spleen mobilization offers good control of the hilum. We aim to compare the effect of the early mobilization and delayed arterial ligation (EMDAL) technique with that of the conventional splenectomy technique in patients with portal hypertension. Methods: During the study period from September 2011 to September 2022, 173 patients underwent surgical intervention for portal hypertension at our institution. Among these patients, 114 underwent the conventional method of splenectomy (early arterial ligation and late splenic mobilization) while 59 underwent splenectomy with the EMDAL technique. Demographics were compared between the two groups. Intraoperative and postoperative outcomes were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test in each group. A minimum follow-up of 12 months was performed in each group. Results: Demographics and type of surgical procedure were comparable in the two surgical method groups. Median blood loss was higher in the conventional group than in the EMDAL method. The median duration of surgery was comparable in the two surgical procedures. Clavien-Dindo grade III/IV complications were reported more frequently in the conventional group. Conclusions: The splenic hilum can be controlled well and bleeding can be minimised with early mobilization and delayed arterial ligation.

  • In March 2000, gray mold was found on day lily (Hemerocallis fulva L.) in Korea. Among the symptoms observed was blight or early rot with chlorotic halo of the leaves. All the isolates obtained from the lesions of the diseased plant parts were identified as Botrytis elliptica, based on the morphological characteristics of conidia. Conidia that formed on conidiogenous cells were not in chains, hyaline to pale brown, unicellular, ellipsoidal to obovate with a single hilum at the base, entirely verruculose, and 21-31 x 12-$23\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Pathogenicity of the fungus was established by artificial inoculation on day lily plants. This is the first record of gray mold on day lily caused by B. elliptica in Korea.

  • Bipolaris panici-miliacei, Cercospora fusimaculans, Fusarium moniliforme and Rhizoctonia solani were pathogenic fungi detected from 5 seed samples of common millet (Panicum miliaceum). Morphological characters of B. panici-miliacei were as follows. Conidiophores were dark olivaceous brown, simple, cylindrical, geniculate, and septate. Conidia were fusoid, dark olivaceous brown, tapering gradually toward the ends, straight to slightly curved, 3~13 distoseptate, and 29.4~155.4$\times$10~26 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size with dark hilum included within the contour of the basal cell. Seed infection with B. panici-miliacei caused seed rotting, coleoptile spot, and seedling blight of common millet plants. According to the inoculation experiments, B. panici-miliacei showed strong virulence on the young seedlings of common millet, but very weak virulence on the young seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa) and foxtail millet (Setaria italica).

  • Deer hemal nodes were studied by gross anatomy and light microscopy. Hemal nodes were scattered in the periphery of thoracic and abdominal aortae, and spherical or avoid in shape. A hemal node consisted of a thin capsule and a hilum, and had numerous small subcapsular and deep sinuses distended by a great number of erythrocytes. Although a few lymphatic nodules and tissues were seen in the parenchyma, no typical cortex and medulla was defined. Blood vessels occurred, but lymph vessel was not observed in nodes. The parenchyma of the hemal node consisted of many erythrocytes and lymphocytes, and a few granulocytes, plasma cells megakaryocytes and macrophages. The stroma was composed of reticular cells and fibers. The capsule and trabecula was a collagenous connective tissue with smooth myofibers. The above findings suggest that the hemal nodes are involved in blood storage, blood filtration and immune reaction.

  • Lymphoid hamartomas are a rare benign disease which can be easily treated by complete surgical excision. They developed most often in the thorax, and can be discovered usually on routine chest X-ray.p But some of them can also be found because of pressure symptoms or the presence of a palpable mass if outside the thorax. We experienced a case of the hyaline-vascular type of lymphoid hamartoma in the left hilum of a 29 year-old Korean male in March, 1979. He was well except intermittent cough and left chest discomfort of a year duration and was treated by resection of the left upper lobe including nodular tumor masses. The histological characteristics were an aggregation of lymphoid follicles composed of concentrically arranged mature lymphocytes with centrally placed thick walled arterioles showing endothelial proliferation and some of them were hyalinized. Between the follicles, there was extensive capillary proliferation and infiltration of numerous lymphocytes, scanty plasma cells and eosinophils.
