  • The construction project of the Kijang research reactor (KJRR), which is the second research reactor in Korea, has been launched. The KJRR was designed to use, for the first time, U-Mo fuel. Plate-type U-7 wt.% Mo/Al-5 wt.% Si, referred to as U-7Mo/Ale5Si, dispersion fuel with a uranium loading of $8.0gU/cm^3$, was selected to achieve higher fuel efficiency and performance than are possible when using $U_3Si_2/Al$ dispersion fuel. To qualify the U-Mo fuel in terms of plate geometry, the first miniplates [HANARO Miniplate (HAMP-1)], containing U-7Mo/Al-5Si dispersion fuel ($8gU/cm^3$), were fabricated at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and recently irradiated at HANARO. The PIE (Post-irradiation Examination) results of the HAMP-1 irradiation test were analyzed in depth in order to verify the safe in-pile performance of the U-7Mo/Al-5Si dispersion fuel under the KJRR irradiation conditions. Nondestructive analyses included visual inspection, gamma spectrometric mapping, and two-dimensional measurements of the plate thickness and oxide thickness. Destructive PIE work was also carried out, focusing on characterization of the microstructural behavior using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electron probe microanalysis was also used to measure the elemental concentrations in the interaction layer formed between the U-Mo kernels and the matrix. A blistering threshold test and a bending test were performed on the irradiated HAMP-1 miniplates that were saved from the destructive tests. Swelling evaluation of the U-Mo fuel was also conducted using two methods: plate thickness measurement and meat thickness measurement.

  • The present work deals with second order statistics of post buckling response of piezoelectric laminated composite cylindrical shell panel subjected to hygro-thermo-electro-mechanical loading with random system properties. System parameters such as the material properties, thermal expansion coefficients and lamina plate thickness are assumed to be independent of the temperature and electric field and modeled as random variables. The piezoelectric material is used in the forms of layers surface bonded on the layers of laminated composite shell panel. The mathematical formulation is based on higher order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear kinematics. A efficient $C^0$ nonlinear finite element method based on direct iterative procedure in conjunction with a first order perturbation approach (FOPT) is developed for the implementation of the proposed problems in random environment and is employed to evaluate the second order statistics (mean and variance) of the post buckling load of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell panel. Typical numerical results are presented to examine the effect of various environmental conditions, amplitude ratios, electrical voltages, panel side to thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, curvature to side ratios, lamination schemes and types of loadings with random system properties. It is observed that the piezoelectric effect has a significant influence on the stochastic post buckling response of composite shell panel under various loading conditions and some new results are presented to demonstrate the applications of present work. The results obtained using the present solution approach is validated with those results available in the literature and also with independent Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).

  • In order to characterize insulation properties of epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silicate composite (EMNC), long-term and short-term AC treeing tests were carried out undr non-uniform electric field generated between needle-plate electrodes. In a long-term test, a 10 kV (60 Hz) electrical field was applied to the specimen positioned between the electrodes with a distance of 2.7 mm in an insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$, and a typical branch type electrical tree was observed in the neat epoxy resin and breakdown took place at 1,042 min after applying the 10 kVelectrical field. Meanwhile, the spherical tree with the tree length of $237{\mu}m$ was seen in EMNC-65-0.3 at 52,380 min (36.4 day) and then the test was stopped because the tree propagation rate was too low. In the short-term test, an electrial field was applied to a 3.5 mm-thick specimen at an increasing voltage rate of 0.5 kV/s until breakdown in insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical insulation breakdown strength for neat epoxy resin was 1,763 kV/mm at $30^{\circ}C$, while that for EMNC-65-0.3 was 2,604 kV/mm, which was a modified value of 47%. As was expected, the breakdown strength decreased at higher test temperatures.

  • Both the wet and dry types of garlic peeling machines are being presently used in domestic garlic processing factory, but the dry type is more popular than the wet type because of higher peeling efficiency. The peeling efficiency of these machines is estimated 50 to 80%, depending on the difference in garlic varieties, physical properties and moisture content of garlic samples. If the peeling time is increased in order to improve the peeling efficiency, the damage on the surface of peeled garlic and the consumption of electric power are also increased. This study was carried out to solve these problems in garlic peeling operation and to obtain the optimun design factor for the friction type separator. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The average friction coefficients of peeled and unpeeled garlic samples were 0.91 and 0.51. respectively, for the acrylic plate, and 0.96 and 0.51, respectively, for the stainless plate. 2. For the inclined acrylic pipe with the pipe length 90 cm, the inclined angle $39^{\circ}$ and the pipe diameter 45-55 mm, the falling time of peeled garlic samples was 0.2 sec, faster than unpeeled garlic samples. 3. For the inclined stainless pipe with the pipe length 90 cm, the inclined angle $34^{\circ}$, $39^{\circ}$ and the pipe diameter pipe 35 mm, the falling time of peeled garlic samples was 0.7 sec, slower than that with the pipe diameter 47mm. 4. The stainless pipe with the pipe length 80~90 cm, the inclined angle $39^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$ and the pipe diameter 40~50 mm was the most suitable as the material of friction pipe. 5. Experimental garlic peeling machine is composed of garlic sample feeding device, friction stainless pipe and hopper. The peeling efficiency was 81 to 96%, and the separating capacity, 600 gr/min.

  • The hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) system was introduced to the Korean livestock slaughter and product processing business in 1997. Ice cream manufacturers focus on the sterilization process in order to reduce microorganism, so the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufacturers particularly set the sterilization process as critical control point (CCP). Therefore, the microbiological test results on the finished products can be considered as one of the indicators which show the level of microbiological control in the ice cream manufacturers. Accordingly, this study was carried out to examine if there is a meaningful difference in terms of the microbiological control level between the HACCP-accredited and non-accredited ice cream manufacturer groups by comparing aerobic plate count (APC) of ice creams. The mean of APC was 1.68 Log CFU/g in the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufacturer group and 2.59 Log CFU/g in the non-accredited ones respectively and there was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The test results suggest that the level of microbiological control in the HACCP-accredited ice cream manufactures is much higher than that of non-accredited ones.

  • This work presents a dynamic investigation of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on elastic foundation using a simple quasi-3D higher shear deformation theory (quasi-3D HSDT) in which the stretching effect is considered. The culmination of this theory is that in addition to taking into account the effect of thickness extension (${\varepsilon}_z{\neq}0$), the kinematic is defined with only 4 unknowns, which is even lower than the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The elastic foundation is included in the formulation using the Pasternak mathematical model. The governing equations are deduced through the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then solved via closed-type solutions of the Navier type. The fundamental frequencies are predicted by solving the eigenvalue problem. The degree of accuracy of present solutions can be shown by comparing it to the 3D solution and other closed-form solutions available in the literature.

  • This work presents a non-linear cylindrical bending analysis of functionally graded plate reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in thermal environment using a simple integral higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). This theory does not require shear correction factors and the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically through the thickness. The material properties of SWCNTs are assumed to be temperature-dependent and are obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. The material properties of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTCRs) are considered to be graded in the thickness direction, and are estimated through a micromechanical model. The non-linear strain-displacement relations in the Von Karman sense are used to study the effect of geometric non-linearity and the solution is obtained by minimization of the total potential energy. The numerical illustrations concern the nonlinear bending response of FG-CNTRC plates under different sets of thermal environmental conditions, from which results for uniformly distributed CNTRC plates are obtained as benchmarks.

  • Six prototype field tests (five 1/8 and one 1/2 scale tests) have been conducted in order to determine the uplift resistance of deep foundation for transmission line structures. Test sites, located in the city of Eumseng in Choongbuk province, are classified as gneiss. These test results reveal failures not along the foundation-rock interface but either along the damaged surrounding rock mass caused by excavation or along the pre-existing rock joint. Test results also show the uplift resistance which is 20 $\sim$ 30% higher than the current design strength of side friction. In addition to fold tests, four concrete core samples between the liner plate and the surrounding rock mass have been obtained from the existing transmission foundations to study the effect of the liner plate which is installed prior to placing concrete. The compressive strength of these concrete core samples shows 63 $\sim$ 72% of the strength at the time of foundation construction. Side frictional resistance based on such less compacted concrete reaches satisfying uplift design strength.

  • Due to higher strength-to-weight ratio of composite laminates, they find uses in many weight-sensitive applications like aerospace, automobile and marine structures. From a reliability point of view, accurate prediction of failure of these structures is important. Due to the complexities in the manufacturing processes of composite laminates, there is a variation in the material properties and geometric parameters. Hence stochastic aspects are important while designing the composite laminates. Many existing works of composite laminate failure analysis are based on the deterministic approach but it is important to consider the randomness in the material properties, geometry and loading to predict accurate failure loads. In this paper the statistics of the ultimate failure load of the [0/θ]s laminated composite plate (LCP) containing the edge crack and voids subjected to the tensile loading are presented in terms of the mean and coefficient of variance (COV). The objective is to better the efficacy of laminate failure by predicting the statistics of the ultimate failure load of LCP with random material, geometric and loading parameters. The stochastic analysis is done by using the extended finite element method (XFEM) combined with the second-order perturbation technique (SOPT). The ultimate failure load of the LCP is obtained by ply-by-ply failure analysis using the ply discount method combined with the Tsai-Wu failure criterion. The aim is to know the effect of the stacking sequence, crack length, crack angle, location of voids and number of voids on the mean and corresponding COV of the ultimate failure load of LCP is investigated. The results of the ultimate failure load obtained by the present method are in good agreement with the existing experimental and numerical results. It is observed that [0/θ]s LCPs are very sensitive to the randomness in the crack length, applied load, transverse tensile strength of the laminate and modulus of elasticity of the material, so precise control of these parameters is important. The novelty of the present study is, the stochastic implementation in XFEM for the failure prediction of LCPs containing crack and voids.

  • In order to demonstrate the usefulness of Deodeok. the functions of Deodeok and the qualities of Cheongkukjang were investigated. DPPH (1.1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging activity of Deodeok extracted with 70% ethanol was higher than that of water extract. The direct antimutagenic effect of ethanol extract of Deodeok was examined by Ames test using Salmonella typimurium TA 98. The inhibition rates on ethanol extract at concentrations of 200, 1.000, 2.000, 3.000 and 4.000 ${\mu}g$/plate were 5.75, 31.38, 34.75, 53.50 and 83.75%, respectively. The inhibition rates of ethanol extract was higher over 2 times than that of water extract. The qualities including physicochemical and sensory properties of Deodeok Cheongkukjang were investigated over the following range of Deodeok levels; 5, 10, 15 and 20% (w/w). The strain used in Cheongkukjang manufacture was Bacillus sp. B-3 with the highest enzyme activities such as amylase and protease. During fermentation at $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 days. amino-type nitrogen content of Cheongkukjang containing 10% (w/w) Deodeok was more than others. When Deodeok content exceeded 15% (w/w), higher contents resulted in lesser amino-type nitrogen production. The results showed that Deodeok had influenced the growth of Bacillus sp. B-3. The L-value of Deodeok Cheongkukjang was decreased according to increasing the Deodeok contents. Sensory evaluation showed that Deodeok Cheongkukjang containing 10% (w/w) Deodeok was superior to other tested.
