  • Veneer plate was painted by the treatment with ammonium salts such as ammonium chloride (AMCR), ammonium sulfate (AMSF), monoammonium phosphate (MAPP), and diammonium phosphate (DAPP) at room temperature. The physical property and flammability of painted veneer plate were investigated. In order to evaluate flammability of the treated veneer with ammonium salts, heat release rate (HRR) of the veneer was measured by a cone calorimeter according to ISO 5660-1 standard. The flammability painted veneener plate with ammonium salts was reduced compared to virgin veneer plate. The flashover possibility of veneer plates treated with these ammonium salts was examined by R. V. Petrella's classification using time to ignition and peak heat release rate. The specific gravities of veneer plates treated with only ammonium sulfate were higher than that of virgin veneer plate. Also, the veneer plates treated with ammonium salts showed lower equilibrium moisture contents over virgin veneer.

  • The present work presents a free vibration and buckling analysis of orthotropic plates by proposing a novel two variable refined plate theory. Contrary to the conventional higher order shear deformation theories (HSDT) and the first shear deformation theory (FSDT), the proposed theory utilizes a novel displacement field which incorporates undetermined integral terms and involves only two unknowns. The governing equations are obtained from the dynamic version of principle of virtual works. The analytical solution of a simply supported orthotropic plate has been determined by using the Navier method. Numerical investigations are performed by employing the proposed model and the obtained results are compared with the existing HSDTs.

  • The effect of porosity on the thermo-mechanical behavior of simply supported functionally graded plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation is investigated analytically in the present paper using new refined hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory. Both even and uneven distribution of porosity are taken into account and the effective properties of FG plates with porosity are defined by theoretical formula with an additional term of porosity. The present formulation is based on a refined higher order shear deformation theory, which is based on four variables and it still accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shearing strains and stresses through the thickness of the FG plate and takes into account the various distribution shape of porosity. The elastic foundation is described by the Winkler-Pasternak model. Anew modified power-law formulation is used to describe the material properties of FGM plates in the thickness direction. The closed form solutions are obtained by using Navier technique. The present results are verified in comparison with the published ones in the literature. The results show that the dimensionless and stresses are affected by the porosity volume fraction, constituent volume fraction, and thermal load.

  • The bending and buckling behaviours of FG-GRNC laminated sandwich plates are investigated by using novel five-variables quasi 3D higher order shear deformation plate theory by considering the modified continuum nonlocal strain gradient theory. To calculate the effective Young's modulus of the GRNC sandwich plate along the thickness direction, and Poisson's ratio and mass density, the modified Halpin-Tsai model and the rule of the mixture are employed. Based on a new field of displacement, governing equilibrium equations of the GRNC sandwich plate are solved using a developed approach of Galerkin method. A detailed parametric analysis is carried out to highlight the influences of length scale and material scale parameters, GPLs distribution pattern, the weight fraction of GPLs, geometry and size of GPLs, the geometry of the sandwich plate and the total number of layers on the stresses, deformation and critical buckling loads. Some details are studied exclusively for the first time, such as stresses and the nonlocality effect.

  • This work proposes an original single variable shear deformation theory to study the buckling analysis of thick isotropic plates subjected to uniaxial and biaxial in-plane loads. This theory is built upon the classical plate theory (CPT) including the exponential function in terms of thickness coordinate to represent shear deformation effect and it involves only one governing differential equation. Efficacy of the present theory is confirmed through illustrative numerical examples. The obtained results are compared with those of other higher-order shear deformation plate theory results.

  • LNG cargo containment system (CCS) has the primary function of ensuring adequate thermal insulation with keeping natural gas below its boiling point. From the viewpoint of structural design, this LNG CCS can be treated as a laminated composite structure showing complex structural responses under the sloshing load which can be defined as a violent behavior of the liquid contents in cargo tanks due to external forced motions. As LNG CCS type, Mark III containment system from TGZ is considered in this paper and then its structural strength assessment is performed based on a simple higher-order shear deformation theory and maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Wu failure criteria developed for laminated composite plates. The assessment is performed to the initial failure of the Mark III CS plate by investigating failure locations and loads.

  • Due to advancement of industrialization, the flue gas from the combustion of industrial factories and various means of transportation have polluted air. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new techniques of air purification. In order to produce a more effective reactor, simulation were conducted using the Flux-II D program. The condition of the simulation were as follows: The height of the plate electrode was 0 mm or 2 mm higher than that of the wire electrode. The distance between the electrodes was 12 mm, and the diameter of the wire electrode was 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm. The results of the electric potential and electric field simulations show that pollutants will be more effectively removed due to the dielectric strength between wire electrode and plate electrode which was strong, and wire electrodes which were concentrated in a high electric field.

  • This work presents a bending, buckling, and vibration analysis of functionally graded plates by employing a novel higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). This theory has only four unknowns, which is even less than the first shear deformation theory (FSDT). A shear correction coefficient is, thus, not needed. Unlike the conventional HSDT, the present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral variables. Equations of motion are obtained by utilizing the Hamilton's principles and solved via Navier's procedure. The convergence and the validation of the proposed theoretical numerical model are performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the model.

  • Carbon-epoxy prepreg has been introduced in the forming of the upper and lower swash plates that control the pitch of rotor blade of unmanned helicopter because of its lightweight. Taguchi experimental method has been used by introducing the variables such as arrangement angle, laminated number and forming temperature, in order to obtain the proper forming method by using prepreg satisfying the required strength of the swash plate. In the evaluation of structural safety for the swash plates, three kinds of models are considered by using FE-analysis. In comparison of the hot forged products with Al6061-T6 and the formed products with prepreg, it was found that ultimate tensile strength of the products with prepreg is three times higher than that of the Al6061-T6, and the weight reduction of 68.5g can be achieved by using prepreg swash plates.

  • This proposed project presents the bi-axial and uni-axial stability behavior of laminated composite plates based on an original three variable "refined" plate theory. The important "novelty" of this theory is that besides the inclusion of a cubic distribution of transverse shear deformations across the thickness of the structure, it treats only three variables such as conventional plate theory (CPT) instead five as in the well-known theory of "first shear deformation" (FSDT) and theory of "higher order shear deformation" (HSDT). A "shear correction coefficient" is therefore not employed in the current formulation. The computed results are compared with those of the CPT, FSDT and exact 3D elasticity theory. Good agreement is demonstrated and proved for the present results with those of "HSDT" and elasticity theory.
